This fifth volume on Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion collects theoretical and applied contributions of researchers working in different fields of applications and in mathematics, and is available in open-access. The collected contributions of this volume have either been published or presented after disseminating the fourth volume in 2015 in international conferences, seminars, workshops and journals, or they are new. The contributions of each part of this volume are chronologically ordered. First Part of this book presents some theoretical advances on DSmT, dealing mainly with modified Proportional Conflict Redistribution Rules (PCR) of combination with degree of intersection, coarsening techniques, interval calculus for PCR thanks to set inversion via interval analysis (SIVIA), rough set classifiers, canonical decomposition of dichotomous belief functions, fast PCR fusion, fast inter-criteria analysis with PCR, and improved PCR5 and PCR6 rules preserving the (quasi-)neutrality of (quasi-)vacuous belief assignment in the fusion of sources of evidence with their Matlab codes. Because more applications of DSmT have emerged in the past years since the apparition of the fourth book of DSmT in 2015, the second part of this volume is about selected applications of DSmT mainly in building change detection, object recognition, quality of data association in tracking, perception in robotics, risk assessment for torrent protection and multi-criteria decision-making, multi-modal image fusion, coarsening techniques, recommender system, levee characterization and assessment, human heading perception, trust assessment, robotics, biometrics, failure detection, GPS systems, inter-criteria analysis, group decision, human activity recognition, storm prediction, data association for autonomous vehicles, identification of maritime vessels, fusion of support vector machines (SVM), Silx-Furtif RUST code library for information fusion including PCR rules, and network for ship classification. Finally, the third part presents interesting contributions related to belief functions in general published or presented along the years since 2015. These contributions are related with decision-making under uncertainty, belief approximations, probability transformations, new distances between belief functions, non-classical multi-criteria decision-making problems with belief functions, generalization of Bayes theorem, image processing, data association, entropy and cross-entropy measures, fuzzy evidence numbers, negator of belief mass, human activity recognition, information fusion for breast cancer therapy, imbalanced data classification, and hybrid techniques mixing deep learning with belief functions as well

Title from PDF of title page, viewed January 31, 2023Dissertation advisor: Cory BeardVitaIncludes bibliographical references (pages 173-194)Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. University of Missouri--Kansas City, 2022This works proposes optimization of cellular handovers, cellular network survivability modeling, multi-connectivity and secure network slicing using matrix exponentials and machine learning techniques. We propose matrix exponential (ME) modeling of handover arrivals with the potential to much more accurately characterize arrivals and prioritize resource allocation for handovers, especially handovers for emergency or public safety needs. With the use of a ‘B’ matrix for representing a handover arrival, we have a rich set of dimensions to model system handover behavior. We can study multiple parameters and the interactions between system events along with the user mobility, which would trigger a handoff in any given scenario. Additionally, unlike any traditional handover improvement scheme, we develop a ‘Deep-Mobility’ model by implementing a deep learning neural network (DLNN) to manage network mobility, utilizing in-network deep learning and prediction. We use the radio and the network key performance indicators (KPIs) to train our model to analyze network traffic and handover requirements. Cellular network design must incorporate disaster response, recovery and repair scenarios. Requirements for high reliability and low latency often fail to incorporate network survivability for mission critical and emergency services. Our Matrix Exponential (ME) model shows how survivable networks can be designed based on controlling numbers of crews, times taken for individual repair stages, and the balance between fast and slow repairs. Transient and the steady state representations of system repair models, namely, fast and slow repairs for networks consisting of multiple repair crews have been analyzed. Failures are exponentially modeled as per common practice, but ME distributions describe the more complex recovery processes. In some mission critical communications, the availability requirements may exceed five or even six nines (99.9999%). To meet such a critical requirement and minimize the impact of mobility during handover, a Fade Duration Outage Probability (FDOP) based multiple radio link connectivity handover method has been proposed. By applying such a method, a high degree of availability can be achieved by utilizing two or more uncorrelated links based on minimum FDOP values. Packet duplication (PD) via multi-connectivity is a method of compensating for lost packets on a wireless channel. Utilizing two or more uncorrelated links, a high degree of availability can be attained with this strategy. However, complete packet duplication is inefficient and frequently unnecessary. We provide a novel adaptive fractional packet duplication (A-FPD) mechanism for enabling and disabling packet duplication based on a variety of parameters. We have developed a ‘DeepSlice’ model by implementing Deep Learning (DL) Neural Network to manage network load efficiency and network availability, utilizing in-network deep learning and prediction. Our Neural Network based ‘Secure5G’ Network Slicing model will proactively detect and eliminate threats based on incoming connections before they infest the 5G core network elements. These will enable the network operators to sell network slicing as-a-service to serve diverse services efficiently over a single infrastructure with higher level of security and reliability.Introduction -- Matrix exponential and deep learning neural network modeling of cellular handovers -- Survivability modeling in cellular networks -- Multi connectivity based handover enhancement and adaptive fractional packet duplication in 5G cellular networks -- Deepslice and Secure5G: a deep learning framework towards an efficient, reliable and secure network slicing in 5G networks -- Conclusion and future scop

BackgroundThe study aimed to understand the factors affecting the health and healthcare of the first cohort of migrant workers in China using the concept of the cumulative disadvantage framework.MethodsData from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey (2017) were used to analyze the process of cumulative disadvantage of health and healthcare among migrant workers. The study also analyzed the spatial lag problem between localized medical insurance policies and healthcare accessibility.ResultsThe results revealed a significant negative association between the mobility of the first cohort of migrant workers and their health status. Long-term exposure to hazardous work had a greater negative impact on their health. Chinese migrant workers faced significant obstacles in accessing healthcare due to the lack of portability in health insurance.ConclusionThe study emphasizes the urgent need for addressing the structural barriers hindering healthcare access and outcomes for migrant workers. It is crucial to promote a more equitable and sustainable healthcare system in China to ensure migrant workers’ health and well-being

A Fully Parallelized and Budgeted Multi-level Monte Carlo Framework for Partial Differential Equations: From Mathematical Theory to Automated Large-Scale Computations

All collected data on any physical, technical or economical process is subject to uncertainty. By incorporating this uncertainty in the model and propagating it through the system, this data error can be controlled. This makes the predictions of the system more trustworthy and reliable. The multi-level Monte Carlo (MLMC) method has proven to be an effective uncertainty quantification tool, requiring little knowledge about the problem while being highly performant. In this doctoral thesis we analyse, implement, develop and apply the MLMC method to partial differential equations (PDEs) subject to high-dimensional random input data. We set up a unified framework based on the software M++ to approximate solutions to elliptic and hyperbolic PDEs with a large selection of finite element methods. We combine this setup with a new variant of the MLMC method. In particular, we propose a budgeted MLMC (BMLMC) method which is capable to optimally invest reserved computing resources in order to minimize the model error while exhausting a given computational budget. This is achieved by developing a new parallelism based on a single distributed data structure, employing ideas of the continuation MLMC method and utilizing dynamic programming techniques. The final method is theoretically motivated, analyzed, and numerically well-tested in an automated benchmarking workflow for highly challenging problems like the approximation of wave equations in randomized media

    Context Awareness in Swarm Systems

Recent swarms of Uncrewed Systems (UxS) require substantial human input to support their operation. The little 'intelligence' on these platforms limits their potential value and increases their overall cost. Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions are needed to allow a single human to guide swarms of larger sizes. Shepherding is a bio-inspired swarm guidance approach with one or a few sheepdogs guiding a larger number of sheep. By designing AI-agents playing the role of sheepdogs, humans can guide the swarm by using these AI agents in the same manner that a farmer uses biological sheepdogs to muster sheep. A context-aware AI-sheepdog offers human operators a smarter command and control system. It overcomes the current limiting assumption in the literature of swarm homogeneity to manage heterogeneous swarms and allows the AI agents to better team with human operators. This thesis aims to demonstrate the use of an ontology-guided architecture to deliver enhanced contextual awareness for swarm control agents. The proposed architecture increases the contextual awareness of AI-sheepdogs to improve swarm guidance and control, enabling individual and collective UxS to characterise and respond to ambiguous swarm behavioural patterns. The architecture, associated methods, and algorithms advance the swarm literature by allowing improved contextual awareness to guide heterogeneous swarms. Metrics and methods are developed to identify the sources of influence in the swarm, recognise and discriminate the behavioural traits of heterogeneous influencing agents, and design AI algorithms to recognise activities and behaviours. The proposed contributions will enable the next generation of UxS with higher levels of autonomy to generate more effective Human-Swarm Teams (HSTs)

    Algebraic Topology for Data Scientists

This book gives a thorough introduction to topological data analysis (TDA), the application of algebraic topology to data science. Algebraic topology is traditionally a very specialized field of math, and most mathematicians have never been exposed to it, let alone data scientists, computer scientists, and analysts. I have three goals in writing this book. The first is to bring people up to speed who are missing a lot of the necessary background. I will describe the topics in point-set topology, abstract algebra, and homology theory needed for a good understanding of TDA. The second is to explain TDA and some current applications and techniques. Finally, I would like to answer some questions about more advanced topics such as cohomology, homotopy, obstruction theory, and Steenrod squares, and what they can tell us about data. It is hoped that readers will acquire the tools to start to think about these topics and where they might fit in.Comment: 322 pages, 69 figures, 5 table

Estimation of Treatment Effects in the Presence of Irregular Assessment Times, Informative Missingness After ICU Discharge, and Interference

    Get PDF
We develop statistical methods for estimation of treatment effects in three settings, each with its own complication. We first consider trials which call for outcome assessments at certain pre-specified times, but where in practice there is substantial variability in participants' actual assessment times. We develop statistical theory for analyzing such a trial using a sensitivity analysis approach which allows for the fact that outcomes at time t may directly impact whether participants are assessed at time t. We apply our method to a trial of participants with uncontrolled asthma. Next we study trials to prevent or treat delirium among ICU patients. We develop a missing data approach for estimating treatment effects in trials where delirium information is unavailable after the patient has been discharged from the ICU. Finally, we consider observational twin studies where one twin's exposure may impact their co-twin's outcome. We derive efficient estimators of the main effect of twins' exposures on their own outcomes, and of the spillover effect of twins' exposures on their co-twins' outcomes. We use our estimators to analyze a study of the impact of exposure to alcohol in early adolescence on adult drinking behavior
