Multi-ancestry study of blood lipid levels identifies four loci interacting with physical activity.
Many genetic loci affect circulating lipid levels, but it remains unknown whether lifestyle factors, such as physical activity, modify these genetic effects. To identify lipid loci interacting with physical activity, we performed genome-wide analyses of circulating HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in up to 120,979 individuals of European, African, Asian, Hispanic, and Brazilian ancestry, with follow-up of suggestive associations in an additional 131,012 individuals. We find four loci, in/near CLASP1, LHX1, SNTA1, and CNTNAP2, that are associated with circulating lipid levels through interaction with physical activity; higher levels of physical activity enhance the HDL cholesterol-increasing effects of the CLASP1, LHX1, and SNTA1 loci and attenuate the LDL cholesterol-increasing effect of the CNTNAP2 locus. The CLASP1, LHX1, and SNTA1 regions harbor genes linked to muscle function and lipid metabolism. Our results elucidate the role of physical activity interactions in the genetic contribution to blood lipid levels
Parallel processing and non-uniform grids in global air quality modeling
A large-scale global air quality model, running efficiently on a single vector processor, is enhanced to make more realistic and more long-term simulations feasible. Two strategies are combined: non-uniform grids and parallel processing. The communication through the hierarchy of non-uniform grids interferes with the inter-processor communication. We discuss load balance in the decomposition of the domain, I/O, and inter-processor communication. A model shows that the communication overhead for both techniques is very low, whence non-uniform grids allow for large speed-ups and high speed-up can be expected from parallelization. The implementation is in progress, and results of experiments will be reported elsewhere
Improving the geological interpretation of magnetic and gravity satellite anomalies
Current limitations in the quantitative interpretation of satellite-elevation geopotential field data and magnetic anomaly data were investigated along with techniques to overcome them. A major result was the preparation of an improved scalar magnetic anomaly map of South America and adjacent marine areas directly from the original MAGSAT data. In addition, comparisons of South American and Euro-African data show a strong correlation of anomalies along the Atlantic rifted margins of the continents
On the Application of a Monolithic Array for Detecting Intensity-Correlated Photons Emitted by Different Source Types
It is not widely appreciated that many subtleties are involved in the
accurate measurement of intensity-correlated photons; even for the original
experiments of Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT). Using a monolithic 4x4 array of
single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs), together with an off-chip algorithm for
processing streaming data, we investigate the difficulties of measuring
second-order photon correlations g2 in a wide variety of light fields that
exhibit dramatically different correlation statistics: a multimode He-Ne laser,
an incoherent intensity-modulated lamp-light source and a thermal light source.
Our off-chip algorithm treats multiple photon-arrivals at pixel-array pairs, in
any observation interval, with photon fluxes limited by detector saturation, in
such a way that a correctly normalized g2 function is guaranteed. The impact of
detector background correlations between SPAD pixels and afterpulsing effects
on second-order coherence measurements is discussed. These results demonstrate
that our monolithic SPAD array enables access to effects that are otherwise
impossible to measure with stand-alone detectors.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
GeoCLEF 2007: the CLEF 2007 cross-language geographic information retrieval track overview
GeoCLEF ran as a regular track for the second time within the Cross
Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF) 2007. The purpose of GeoCLEF is to test
and evaluate cross-language geographic information retrieval (GIR): retrieval
for topics with a geographic specification. GeoCLEF 2007 consisted of two sub
tasks. A search task ran for the third time and a query classification task was
organized for the first. For the GeoCLEF 2007 search task, twenty-five search
topics were defined by the organizing groups for searching English, German,
Portuguese and Spanish document collections. All topics were translated into
English, Indonesian, Portuguese, Spanish and German. Several topics in 2007
were geographically challenging. Thirteen groups submitted 108 runs. The
groups used a variety of approaches. For the classification task, a query log
from a search engine was provided and the groups needed to identify the
queries with a geographic scope and the geographic components within the
local queries
