FengShui – a systematic research of vernacular sustainable development In Ancient China and its lessons for future
Creating and keeping balance is the basic and the most important principle of Chinese traditional philosophy. It provides the fundamental philosophical basis for Chinese FengShui in pursuing coexistence between human and nature. Influenced by the traditional philosophy, Chinese FengShui displays the concept of balance, harmony and order in the design of ancient living environment and development of traditional settlement with many detailed manifestations that embody representative sustainable character. This paper discusses the principle of sustainability in FengShui practice from philosophical, environmental, ecological, socio-cultural and economic perspectives. It further intends to reveal the inherent connection between FengShui, traditional Chinese culture and the vernacular sustainable development of the agricultural society in ancient China
Etyma for 'chicken', 'duck', and 'goose' among language phyla in China and Southeast Asia
This paper considers the history of words for domesticated poultry, including ‘chicken’,
‘goose’, and ‘duck’, in China and mainland Southeast Asia to try to relate associated
domestication events with specific language groups. Linguistic, archaeological and historical
evidence supports Sinitic as one linguistic source, but in other cases, Tai and Austroasiatic
form additional centers of lexical forms which were borrowed by neighboring phyla. It is
hypothesized that these geographic regions of etyma for domesticated birds may represent
instances of bird domestication, or possibly advances in bird husbandry, by speech communities
in the region in the Neolithic Era, followed by spread of both words and cultural practices
Relativism and universalism in interrogation fairness: a comparative analysis between Europe and China
This paper addresses Chinese interrogation rules from historical and comparative perspectives by relating them to the very different development of interrogation procedure in Europe. A fuller understanding of the evolution of the rules in both contexts is relevant to the present day controversy concerning the universal versus relative nature of interrogation fairness. The comparative analysis reveals that, in fact, the influence of ancient Greek and Chinese civilizations resulted in a great difference between Europe and China regarding legal cultures and institutional arrangements for criminal interrogation procedure. Considering future legal reforms in China, and given the very different historical and institutional context, the likelihood seems low that an ‘autonomous version’ of the right to remain silent and the privilege against self-incrimination will develop on China’s very different soil. However, traditional native resources are also available to legal reformers to ensure a cooperative interviewing style in criminal questioning, and eliminate police-coerced confessions
Different Clusters of Text from Ancient China, Different Mathematical Ontologies
Sources attesting to mathematical activities in ancient China form at least four distinct clusters of texts, bespeaking at least four different—though overlapping—ways of practicing mathematics. I will focus on two such sets of documents: the canons that in the seventh century constituted one of the two curricula taught in the Imperial “School of Mathematics,” and manuscripts recently excavated from tombs sealed in the last centuries BCE. I will argue that these two sets of documents testify to two different ways of practicing mathematics, which related to different material practices. Accordingly, we can perceive that mathematical objects were shaped and explored in different ways, with significant consequences for the knowledge produced
Searching Signals in Chinese Ancient Records for the C Increases in AD 774-775 and in AD 992-993
According to the analysis of the C content of two Japanese trees over
a period of approximately 3000 years at high time resolution, Miyake (2012)
found a rapid increase at AD 774-775 and later on at AD 992-993 (Miyake 2013).
This corresponds to a high-energy event happened within one year that input
-ray energy about 710erg to the Earth, leaving the
origin a mystery. Such strong event should have an unusual optical counterpart,
and have been recorded in historical literature. We searched Chinese historical
materials around AD 744-775 and AD 992-993, but no remarkable event was found
except a violent thunderstorm in AD 775. However, the possibility of a
thunderstorm containing so much energy is still unlikely. We conclude the event
caused the C increase is still unclear. This event most probably has no
optical counterpart, and short gamma-ray burst, giant flare of a soft gamma-ray
repeater and terrestrial -ray flash may all be the candidates.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
How the Turtle Lost its Shell: Sino-Tibetan Divination Manuals and Cultural Translation
This article is a pan-Himalayan story about how the turtle, as a cultural symbol within Sino-Tibetan divination iconography, came to more closely resemble a frog. It attempts a comparative analysis of Sino-Tibetan divination manuals, from Tibetan Dunhuang and Sinitic turtle divination to frog divination among the Naxi people of southwest China. It is claimed that divination turtles, upon entering the Himalayan foothills, are not just turtles, but become something else: a hybrid symbol transformed via cultural diffusion, from Han China to Tibet, and on to the Naxi of Yunnan. Where borders are crossed, there is translation. If we go beyond the linguistic definition of translation towards an understanding of transfer across semiotic borders, then translation becomes the reforming of a concept from one cultural framework into another. In this way, cultural translation can explain how divination iconography can mutate and transform when it enters different contexts; or in other words, how a turtle can come to lose its shell
