The latest figures from Ofcom show that as many women use the Internet as men in Britain. In the States women are now just ahead at 52%. This has been driven partly by a explosion in the use of social networking sites such as Facebook. This is largely a London-driven phenomenon of 2007 that might slacken next year. But I doubt it will dent the trend towards women going online

    Get PDF
The Internet and communications technologies have enabled the democratization of information and global networking. These two factors have significantly empowered NGOs in championing human rights. Unfortunately, as we have seen over the last year, these same tools can and are being used to identify, inhibit, and destroy efforts by human rights activists. This review of Lannon & Halpin, (2013) (Eds.) Human rights and information communication technologies: Trends and consequences of use (Hershey, PA: Information Science Reference) shows that their book sheds light on the challenges ahead. In particular, the authors have identified eleven technology-related issues facing human rights organizations that need to use ICT while existing in a surveillance-oriented world that threatens their success, and sometimes their very existence

A site that has no definite narrow subjects, it is difficult to attract the attention of advertisers, because most visitors will not be interested in advertising. The third problem is the Russian dumping, which manifests itself in the fact that those who cannot sell in Russia Ukrainian traffic at specific prices, offer it at reduced prices in Ukraine and thus dumping market

The study examined the influence of internet usage on the academic performance of College of Education students in Ghana as being rhetoric or reality. The study adopted descriptive survey design. All year groups (levels 100-400) of St. Joseph’s College of Education were considered as the main population for the study while stratified random sampling technique was used to select 132 respondents. Researchers’ designed questionnaire was used for data collection where Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 25) was used for data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that Internet’s influence on the academic performance of the respondents used for the study is a clear-cut reality other than lip service. Internet provides opportunity to acquire special skills; improves their performance during examination; enhances students to study ahead of their teachers; improves students reading competence; promotes their computer skills towards academic activities among others. Nevertheless, few of the respondents reported that Internet usage distracts their attention and prevents them from attending lectures regularly. Based on that, it was recommended that school counselors with the support of the administrators organise enlightenment programmes for students on how to use the internet to improve academic performance. Students in the understudy institution should be encouraged to use the Internet in searching for information that will enhance and improve their academic performance. It is important also to expose the school counselors on training to computer appreciation so that they can give right counselling direction on Internet usage by students regarding their academic activities

Globally, Higher Education Institutions (HEI) have embraced the use of mobile technology in the delivery of instructional resources which has promised multiple benefits in digital or blended learning, HEIs are facing the challenge of high internet tariffs. The current study sought to improve the accessibility of digital content via mobile technology within limited Internet connectivity contexts. The study used a quantitative research approach within which a descriptive survey research design was adopted. The case study was Mount Kenya University in Kenya. The study was guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The target population was 15123 individuals comprising of 15,000 students and 123 were educators/ ICT staff who accessed digital content in the academic year 2018/2019. The mobile-based model used a WIFI router device which is not internet supported as an alternative to a wired internet connection where students and educators access digital content from the mobile sub-server which was not connected to the internet through their mobile technology. The findings showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between internet connectivity, type of mobile technology, user literacy, data caching, and eLearning policy had a significant effect on the accessibility of digital content. The variables were statistically significant. The adjusted R squared was 0.862 indicating that 86.2 percent of the total variation of accessibility of digital content can be explained by Internet connectivity, e-learning policy, type of mobile technology, data caching, and user literacy. The study then went ahead to develop a mobile-based e-learning model. The findings showed that the use of mobile-based e-learning (m-learning) in universities will greatly improve access to digital content and hence e-learning. The study recommends the use of m-learning as it will provide alternative means of optimizing Internet connectivity

This annual Reuters Institute predictions report looks at the key trends that will impact news media in 2024. Extraordinary advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer the chance for publishers to deliver news more efficiently but the implications for the reliability of information, and the sustainability of the mainstream media are likely to be profound in a year that sees critical elections in more than 40 democracies. With some sources suggesting that the vast majority of all internet content will be synthetically produced by 2026– journalists and news organisations may need to rethink their role and purpose. The report looks ahead to legal battles between publishers and AI tech companies over copyright and possible deals that could open up new revenue streams. The report predicts a further shift towards paid business models online and says that publishers will continue to invest in podcasts, newsletters and short form video content

When the COVID-19 pandemic began to affect in-person schooling, teachers around the world expressed a balance of optimism for new possibilities in instruction along with trepidation at the challenges which lay ahead. Shortly after March 2020 and into the 2021 school year, remote instruction became the norm for several educators. As the pandemic persisted, the optimism teachers first exhibited began to wane considerably as several challenges to student access arose. These issues (e.g., Internet connectivity, crowded living spaces becoming workspaces, children and adults simultaneously working at home, etc.) pose significant threats to equity in education, and they ironically become troublesome in courses whose objectives include analyzing and discussing inequity in education. This article presents the narratives of a graduate student and his adviser as they attempted to co-teach a graduate-level literacy course remotely. The narratives include positive moments of instruction as well as recognized challenges to equity. The article concludes with suggestions for further research on synchronous remote instruction
