    A Web-Based Tool for Analysing Normative Documents in English

    Our goal is to use formal methods to analyse normative documents written in English, such as privacy policies and service-level agreements. This requires the combination of a number of different elements, including information extraction from natural language, formal languages for model representation, and an interface for property specification and verification. We have worked on a collection of components for this task: a natural language extraction tool, a suitable formalism for representing such documents, an interface for building models in this formalism, and methods for answering queries asked of a given model. In this work, each of these concerns is brought together in a web-based tool, providing a single interface for analysing normative texts in English. Through the use of a running example, we describe each component and demonstrate the workflow established by our tool

    VOFilter, Bridging Virtual Observatory and Industrial Office Applications

    VOFilter is an XML based filter developed by the Chinese Virtual Observatory project to transform tabular data files from VOTable format into OpenDocument format. VOTable is an XML format defined for the exchange of tabular data in the context of the Virtual Observatory (VO). It is the first Proposed Recommendation defined by International Virtual Observatory Alliance, and has obtained wide support from both the VO community and many Astronomy projects. OpenOffice.org is a mature, open source, front office applications suite with the advantage of native support of industrial standard OpenDocument XML file format. Using the VOFilter, VOTable files can be loaded in OpenOffice.org Calc, a spreadsheet application, and then displayed and analyzed as other spreadsheet files. Here, the VOFilter acts as a connector, bridging the coming VO with current industrial office applications. Virtual Observatory and technical background of the VOFilter are introduced. Its workflow, installation and usage are presented.     Firefox Extension to Add Contacts, Events, and View Addresses

    Users of the Firefox browser have the ability to download plugins to manage their contacts. This usually involves typing or copying the details from some source to add contacts. Event and meeting invitations are sent by mail and are added to the user’s calendar once the user accepts the invitation. Users viewing address data on websites are limited to the mapping capabilities provided by the webpage viewed by the user. We developed a Firefox extension that allows the user to select portions of text with contact or event information and add it as a contact or an event in the calendar of their existing mail client application such as: Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird, etc. The data is automatically parsed to pick up relevant information such as name, street address, phone number, and email address in case of contacts and street addresses and event dates in case of event. The extension also allows users to right click on a webpage that has a tabular display of addresses and view these addresses on a maps application such as Google Maps

    1.1 Background Following the advent of the web, there has been a great demand for data interchange between applications using internet infrastructure. XML (extensible Markup Language) provides a structured representation of data empowered by broad adoption and easy deployment. As a subset of SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language), XML has been standardized by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) [Bray et al., 2004], XML is becoming the prevalent data exchange format on the World Wide Web and increasingly significant in storing semi-structured data. After its initial release in 1996, it has evolved and been applied extensively in all fields where the exchange of structured documents in electronic form is required. As with the growing popularity of XML, the issue of functional dependency in XML has recently received well deserved attention. The driving force for the study of dependencies in XML is it is as crucial to XML schema design, as to relational database(RDB) design [Abiteboul et al., 1995]

    International audienceIn the scope of on-board systems development and integration for aircrafts, ICDs (Interface Control Document/Description) are fundamental sources of information at same level that the functional requirements. ICD description must include feasible (bus capacity not exceeded, processing load under specific limits) and accurate (data precision, data retransmission rate, data consistency) inter-connectivity mechanisms, to support the application requirements needs, as well as the information must be easy to update and to maintain.On the other hand, DOORS (IBM) is a tool specialized on requirements management. It faces with aspects as traceability, version control, security (access control), changes control, data persistency and accessibility. DOORS is widely used and it is recognized as a reference tool in the scope of aeronautic developments.Nevertheless, ICD information usually is not managed with DOORS. The reason can be found in the specificities of the nature of ICD information, which suggests other approaches more suitable than DOORS.The alternative approaches are very diverse but most of them focus on handling information typified according to specific meta-models for ICD: databases, customized spreadsheets, and tabular descriptions. But whatever is the solution, it must address also, by its own means, the features of ICD derived of its “requirement nature”.This paper presents a solution based on the integration of DOORS with a user front-end developed with Model Driven Architecture (MDA) and Open Source technologies. It is intended to provide means to manage ICD data in a robust way (guaranteeing the correctness -syntactic, completeness, non ambiguity- of data, changes, versions, dependencies, ...) and additionally, to provide mechanisms to focus the effort on the data transformation rather than on the manual elaboration of derived artefacts

    Representing and Utilizing DDI in Relational Databases

    This document is primarily intended for implementers of DDI-based metadata stores who are considering different technical options for housing and managing their metadata. The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) metadata specification is expressed in the form of XML schema. With version 3, the DDI specification has become quite complex, including 21 namespaces and 846 elements. Organizations employing DDI, or considering doing so, may want to 1. store and manage the metadata elements in relational databases, for reasons of integration with existing systems, familiarity with the concepts of relational databases (such as Structured Query Language), systems performance, and/or other reasons; 2. select only the subset of the available DDI metadata elements that is of utility to their work, and have the flexibility of capturing metadata they need that would not fit into the DDI model. This paper discusses advantages and disadvantages of the relational database approach to managing DDI. It also describes methods for modeling DDI in relational databases and for formally defining subsets of DDI to employ in this environment.
