CARTOGRAFÍAS DEL YO. ESCRITURA AUTOBIOGRÁFICA Y MODERNIDAD EN CENTROAMÉRICA, DEL MODERNISMO AL TESTIMONIO.

This dissertation examines some canonical Central American autobiographical works of the 20th Century. The authors studied include Rubén Darío, Rafael Arévalo Martínez, Froylán Turcios, José Coronel Urtecho, César Brañas, Eunice Odio, Roque Dalton, Miguel Mármol and Rigoberta Menchú. The dissertation maintains that autobiographical writing always interpellates the Other's story and that this interpellation is based in the need to incorporate into modern discourse the social sectors considered "pre-modern." Indigenous people, peasants, women, artisans and workers, oral or illiterate cultures, represent a zone of autobiographical fear and desire. These combined impulses are connected to some cultural peculiarities of the Central American region: mainly, the way in which the rhetoric and practice of Liberalism is adapted by the regional elites from the end of 19th Century onward.After a general overview offered in Chapter 1, this dissertation is divided in three parts that correspond to three different cultural epochs—Modernismo (Chapters 2, 3, 4), Vanguardia (Chapters 5 and 6), and Postvanguardia y testimonio (Chapters 7 y 8). In Modernista autobiography the class-racial-ethnic Other appears as something that "haunts" the traditional, representing both an object of fear and a limit to a Eurocentric concept of modernity. In contrast, the Vanguardista autobiography emphasized its desire of the Other. This general desires for "incorporate" the (national) Other is linked to the foundational /nationalist emphasis that the avant-garde showed in Central America. However, Liberalism never incorporated fully the utopian social models of the Vanguardistas. Due to the crisis of both the Liberal rhetoric and Vanguardista cultural projects, during the 1960s and 1980s the aesthetic-ideological project of the Vanguardia suffered a radicalization. One of the main outcomes was the popularization of testimonio, which has become the most analyzed form of Central American autobiographical writing today. In testimonio the Other and his/her cultural model (basically, orality) and the Gemeinschaft of rural community become embodied as a counter-hegemonic voice that seeks to interpellate the cultural models of the "lettered city" and modernity from a subaltern location

La palabra es de ustedes, me callo por pudor: Antiintelectualismo y emergencia del testimonio en Cuba

El artículo señala y analiza la presencia del testimonio como función no conceptualizada en los debates sobre el papel del intelectual revolucionario en la Cuba de los años sesenta. Algunas canciones de la Nueva Trova Cubana aludían explícitamente a la enunciación testimonial como una forma de superar el descrédito que la voz intelectual había sufrido en esos debates, ligando la emergencia del testimonio al auge del antiintelectualismo. Esa relación se hallaba ya presente, como demuestra el artículo, en los textos de Castro o Guevara, y continuaría estándolo en la instauración del premio testimonio de Casa de las Américas en 1970. The author shows and analyzes the presence of testimony as a non-conceptualised function in the cultural debates about the role of intelligentsia in Cuban Revolution. Some songs of the Nueva Trova Cubana refered to testimonio as a way for overcoming the difficulties of these debates and linked the emergence of testimonio to the rise of antiintelectual imagination. This relationship was already present, as the article aims to show, in the texts written by Castro or Guevara and in the main discourses which accompanied the creation of the testimonio prize by Casa de las Américas

El artículo analiza la relación entre la imagen y el testimonio en el espacio público de la Argentina transicional. Para ello, se concentra en tres tipos de articulación entre testimonio e imagen que se configuraron en aquel momento, aunque luego tuvieron un derrotero mucho más largo, y que permiten debatir más ampliamente las funciones memoriales tanto de la imagen como del testimonio: la imagen como testigo, primero; la imagen en el testimonio, después; y, finalmente, las imágenes de los testigos.This paper deals with the relationship between image and testimony in the public space of transitional Argentine. La obsolescencia no-programada: una circunnavegación alrededor del testimonio latinoamericano y sus avatares críticos

Este artículo ofrece un panorama de las diversas formas narrativas que suelen agruparse bajo el rubro de testimonio latinoamericano. Una vez esbozadas las principales corrientes en los debates críticos generados por el testimonio, este artículo concluye con la sugerencia de que las futuras investigaciones han de enfocarse en la reevaluación de los marcos metodológicos a la luz del contexto actual marcado por la globalización, digitalización y el vertiginoso cambio de las nociones de lo real y lo virtual. Palabras clave: testimonio latinoamericano, crítica del testimonio.This article offers an overview of the myriad narrative forms grouped under the label of Latin American testimonial discourse (testimonio). After outlining the main currents in the critical debates generated by testimonio, this article also offers some suggestions for further research by calling for an in-depth re-evaluation of existing methodological frameworks within the context of globalization, digitalization, and rapidly changing notions of the virtual and the real. Relatos para una revolución potencial. Las crónicas testimoniales de Che Guevara

Este artículo analiza los textos narrativos de Ernesto Guevara, habitualmente englobados bajo la rúbrica de ‘testimonio’. Más que el anacronismo de ajustar la propuesta guevariana a las formulaciones y conceptualizaciones del testimonio que vendrían después, interesa definir con detalle la apuesta de Guevara en su historicidad, para tratar de restituir a sus textos la potencialidad revolucionaria desde la que fueron escritos y que constituyó una de las respuestas posibles a los debates sobre la naturaleza y la función de la cultura en tiempos de revolución. En ese sentido, el artículo pone el acento en el lugar que la escritura narrativa tuvo en el interior del proyecto político de Guevara, como espacio para generar prácticas de emulación revolucionaria. Es por ello que las crónicas de Guevara pueden leerse como un material narrativo pensado para nutrir la revolución mundial potencial. More than adjusting its texts to the theories of ‘testimonio’,  we try to describe the historicity of Guevara’s narrative, trying to keep its revolutionary potentiality. The article, then, focus in the place Guevara gave to its narrative writing within its political project, as a place for generating emulation processes. That is the reason why its testimonial chronicles can be read as a narrative food for the world potential revolution. Key words: Guevara, Cuban Revolution, Testimony, Emulation, New Man
