A PMT-Block test bench
The front-end electronics of the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter (Tile Cal) is
housed in a unit, called {\it PMT-Block}. The PMT-Block is a compact instrument
comprising a light mixer, a PMT together with its divider and a {\it 3-in-1}
card, which provides shaping, amplification and integration for the signals.
This instrument needs to be qualified before being assembled on the detector. A
PMT-Block test bench has been developed for this purpose. This test bench is a
system which allows fast, albeit accurate enough, measurements of the main
properties of a complete PMT-Block. The system, both hardware and software, and
the protocol used for the PMT-Blocks characterisation are described in detail
in this report. The results obtained in the test of about 10000 PMT-Blocks
needed for the instrumentation of the ATLAS (LHC-CERN) hadronic Tile
Calorimeter are also reported.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figure
Prediction of VO\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e Peak Using Sub-Maximum Bench Step Test in Children
The purpose of this study was to develop a valid prediction of maximal oxygen uptake from data collected during a submaximum bench stepping test among children ages 8-12 years. Twentyseven active subjects (16 male and 11 female), weight 36.1 kg, height 144.4 cm and VO2 47.4 ± 7.9 ml/kg/min participated. Subjects completed a maximal oxygen consumption test with analysis of expired air and a submaximal bench stepping test. A formula to predict VO2max was developed from height, resting heart rate and heart rate response during the submaximum bench stepping test. This formula accounted for 71% of the variability in maximal oxygen consumption and is the first step in verifying the validity of the submaximum bench stepping test to predict VO2max. VO2max = -2.354 + (Height in cm * 0.065) + (Resting Heart Rate * 0.008) + (Step Test Average Heart Rate as a Percentage of Resting Heart Rate * -0.870
Fatigue test bench manufacturing by reusing a parallel lathe
Fatigue life of machined parts strongly depends on their surface condition. The rotating bar bending fatigue testing method is widely used to obtain the fatigue behavior of metallic materials due to its simplicity. In this work, the methodology for the design, manufacturing and setup of a fatigue test bench is exposed. The main novelty lies on the reuse of several elements from an old parallel lathe, currently out of order, and their use to manufacture some parts for the test bench. Exploratory Analysis of Benchmark Experiments -- An Interactive Approach
The analysis of benchmark experiments consists in a large part of exploratory methods, especially visualizations. In Eugster et al. [2008] we presented a comprehensive toolbox including the bench plot. This plot visualizes the behavior of the algorithms on the individual drawn learning and test samples according to specific performance measures. In this paper we show an interactive version of the bench plot can easily uncover details and relations unseen with the static version
Design and manufacturing of a Selective Laser Sintering test bench to test sintering materials
The goal of this project is to design and build a prototype of recoating system for a laser cutting machine to turn it into a selective laser sintering printing machine. This prototype will be used to study new sintering materials and to design, if decided, a SLS 3D printing Machine (Selective Laser Sintering). This project has been developed in the installations and funded by Fundació CIM.
The project develops the mechanical design and the electronic system design. Both parts are explained on this paper, so new users can use the machine and can understand the system. With this paper, it is expected that it can be improved in a future to test other parameters and configurations.
The paper is divided in three basic blocks that are summed up here:
The first block is an introduction to the 3D printing technologies. The most used of them are explained and selective laser sintering is explained in deep. With this block the reader can understand why it is important to develop the SLS technology and what has to be done to improve the machines and the technology.
The second block is a discussion on the mechanical design of the machine. The general idea of the machine is explained so the user can understand why the machine is designed in this way. After that, each part is detailed to see how the different mechanical challenges where overtaken. At the end of the block, there is a small calculations section needed on the electronic part.
The third block is an extensive explanation of the electronic system that controls and moves the machine. In that block, the different components are explained so the user can understand its basics working principles. It is also explained how the selection of the electronic components was done. Then everything is put together to see the whole electronic system.
Along with this paper, there are annexes that provide some extra information for the reader. One of this annexes refers to the mechanical part and the other one has some datasheets and coding for the electronic section.
The whole design has been done in SOLIDWORKS cad software and its electric extension ELECWORKS. The programming job was done with Arduino compiler
Noncontacting-optical-strain device
Noncontacting-strain-measuring gauge and extensometer remotely measures the mechanical displacement along the entire length of a test specimen. Measurement is accomplished by continuous scanning of a reflected light from reflective bench markings or stripes previously affixed to the specimen
CBTC Test Simulation Bench
Due to its safety characteristics, signalling equipment requires a great amount of testing and validation during the different stages of its life cycle, and particularly during the installation and commissioning of a new line or upgrade of an existing line, the latter being even more complicated due to the short engineering periods available overnight. This project aims to develop a tool to reduce the above-mentioned efforts by simulating the CBTC trackside, fulfilling the interfaces between subsystems and elements of these subsystems, and using some real elements. In this way, a testing environment for signalling equipment and data has been developed for the CBTC system.
The aims of the project that were set out at the beginning of the development and completed with the present simulator are as follows:
Real CBTC equipment trials and integration: CBTC on-board equipment, CBTC Radio Centre, etc.
Other signalling elements trials and integration: interlockings and SCCs.
CBTC track data validation.
In order to achieve these objectives, various simulation applications have been developed, of which the most important are the following: Infrastructure, Automatic trains, Train systems, Planning and Control Desk, etc. This system has been developed, and is currently adding new modules and functionalities, for companies of the Invensys Grou
