These two genres have impacted upon this ever-changing process of evolution in different ways, but have together been paramount to the establishment of interactivity in music as we understand it today; which is itself having wide-ranging implications upon the modern-day musical landscape as a whole—both in the way that we, as listeners and audience members, purchase and consume music as well as conceptualise and think about it

    Design and semantics of form and movement (DeSForM 2006)

    Design and Semantics of Form and Movement (DeSForM) grew from applied research exploring emerging design methods and practices to support new generation product and interface design. The products and interfaces are concerned with: the context of ubiquitous computing and ambient technologies and the need for greater empathy in the pre-programmed behaviour of the ‘machines’ that populate our lives. Such explorative research in the CfDR has been led by Young, supported by Kyffin, Visiting Professor from Philips Design and sponsored by Philips Design over a period of four years (research funding £87k).     Transforming musical performance: activating the audience as digital collaborators

    Digital technologies have transformed the performance practice, recording and distribution technologies, economy and sonic landscape of music in a process of change that began in the early 1980s. Recent technological developments have opened up the possibility of embodied interaction between audiences and performers, reframing music performance as a collaborative improvisatory space that affords Interactive Musical Participation. The research in this practice-based thesis looks at the relationship and experience of audience members and musicians exploring Interactive Musical Participation within the wide stylistic framework of contemporary jazz. It also studies the potential for the creation of compositional, technological and performance protocols to enable successful Interactive Musical Participation. This has been achieved through a process of mapping the methodology behind the composition, technical infrastructure, performances and post-performance analysis of a series of musical artefacts. Cook (2001 and 2009) suggests that researchers in this field should “Make a piece, not an instrument or controller” and this dictum has influenced the development of the technical infrastructure for this research. Easily accessible and low-cost digital audio workstations Ableton Live (2017) and Logic Pro X (Apple, 2019) as well as the digital protocols Open Sound Control (OSC) (Opensoundcontrol.org) have been utilised to deliver the programming and networking requirements. A major innovation stemming from this project has been the development of the Deeper Love Soundpad App, a sample playback app for Apple smartphones and iPads, in collaboration with Dr. Rob Toulson. The theoretical background to this research has been informed by actornetwork theory, the sociological approach developed by Bruno Latour (2005), Michel Callon (1986) and John Law (1992). Actor-network theory (ANT) provides a framework for understanding the mechanics of power and organisation within heterogeneous non-hierarchical networks.     Reaching digital native music majors : pedagogy for undergraduate group piano in the 21st century

    This dissertation comprises three projects that were designed to contribute to our understanding of today's digital native music majors and their needs within the group piano curriculum. The first investigation is a review of literature pertaining to collegiate group piano, describing existing research and recommending aspects still needing to be studied. The second investigation used phenomenological qualitative methods to investigate the adaptation processes of group piano students as they adjust to the new demands of collegiate music study. Data from participants (N = 6) indicated that despite individual differences, common themes of Preparedness, Motivation, Priorities and Expectations, Support Systems, and Accomplishment/Empowerment were characteristic of the group piano experience for these first-semester students. The third investigation is an experimental study. I sought to determine how the use of technological tools with varied capabilities of providing aural modeling and tempo control features affected collegiate group piano students' achievement. Group piano music majors (N = 43) were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups (control, metronome, YouTube, or Tempo SlowMo). No significant achievement differences were found among the technology groups. Results from these three projects indicated that (a) there is a need for further research in group piano contexts, (b) group piano is a valuable part of the music core curriculum because courses are conducive to 21st-century skill development and (c) individual differences are importantv considerations when assisting students with adaptation processes and technology selection in group piano. These findings may transfer to other core music classes, student experiences, and practice routines.Includes bibliographical reference

    Explanations in Music Recommender Systems in a Mobile Setting

    Revised version: some spelling errors corrected.Every day, millions of users utilize their mobile phones to access music streaming services such as Spotify. However, these `black boxes’ seldom provide adequate explanations for their music recommendations. A systematic literature review revealed that there is a strong relationship between moods and music, and that explanations and interface design choices can effect how people perceive recommendations just as much as algorithm accuracy. However, little seems to be known about how to apply user-centric design approaches, which exploit affective information to present explanations, to mobile devices. In order to bridge these gaps, the work of Andjelkovic, Parra, & O’Donovan (2019) was extended upon and applied as non-interactive designs in a mobile setting. Three separate Amazon Mechanical Turk studies asked participants to compare the same three interface designs: baseline, textual, and visual (n=178). Each survey displayed a different playlist with either low, medium, or high music popularity. Results indicate that music familiarity may or may not influence the need for explanations, but explanations are important to users. Both explanatory designs fared equally better than the baseline, and the use of affective information may help systems become more efficient, transparent, trustworthy, and satisfactory.     Self-adaptive unobtrusive interactions of mobile computing systems

    [EN] In Pervasive Computing environments, people are surrounded by a lot of embedded services. Since pervasive devices, such as mobile devices, have become a key part of our everyday life, they enable users to always be connected to the environment, making demands on one of the most valuable resources of users: human attention. A challenge of the mobile computing systems is regulating the request for users¿ attention. In other words, service interactions should behave in a considerate manner by taking into account the degree to which each service intrudes on the user¿s mind (i.e., the degree of obtrusiveness). The main goal of this paper is to introduce self-adaptive capabilities in mobile computing systems in order to provide non-disturbing interactions. We achieve this by means of an software infrastructure that automatically adapts the service interaction obtrusiveness according to the user¿s context. This infrastructure works from a set of high-level models that define the unobtrusive adaptation behavior and its implication with the interaction resources in a technology-independent way.
