Housing Search in the Age of Big Data: Smarter Cities or the Same Old Blind Spots?
Housing scholars stress the importance of the information environment in shaping housing search behavior and outcomes. Rental listings have increasingly moved online over the past two decades and, in turn, online platforms like Craigslist are now central to the search process. Do these technology platforms serve as information equalizers or do they reflect traditional information inequalities that correlate with neighborhood sociodemographics? We synthesize and extend analyses of millions of US Craigslist rental listings and find they supply significantly different volumes, quality, and types of information in different communities. Technology platforms have the potential to broaden, diversify, and equalize housing search information, but they rely on landlord behavior and, in turn, likely will not reach this potential without a significant redesign or policy intervention. Smart cities advocates hoping to build better cities through technology must critically interrogate technology platforms and big data for systematic biases
Performance Analysis of Blockchain Platforms
Blockchain technologies have drawn massive attention to the world these past few years mostly because of the burst of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Etherium, Ripple and many others. A Blockchain, also known as distributed ledger technology, has demonstrated huge potential in saving time and costs. This open-source technology which generates a decentralized public ledger of transactions is widely appreciated for ensuring a high level of privacy through encryption and thus sharing the transaction details only amongst the participants involved in the transactions. The Blockchain is used not only for cryptocurrency but also by various companies to meet their business ends, such as efficient management of supply chains and logistics. The rise and fall of numerous crypto-currencies based on blockchain technology have generated debate among tech-giants and regulatory bodies. There are various groups which are working on standardizing the blockchain technology. At the same time, numerous groups are actively working, developing and fine-tuning their own blockchain platforms. Platforms such as etherium, hyperledger, parity, etc. have their own pros and cons. This research is focused on the performance analysis of blockchain platforms which gives a comparative understanding of these platforms
MESURE Tool to benchmark Java Card platforms
The advent of the Java Card standard has been a major turning point in smart
card technology. With the growing acceptance of this standard, understanding
the performance behavior of these platforms is becoming crucial. To meet this
need, we present in this paper a novel benchmarking framework to test and
evaluate the performance of Java Card platforms. MESURE tool is the first
framework which accuracy and effectiveness are independent from the particular

A Mobile Money Solution for Illiterate Users
Existing mobile money platforms have text based interfaces and target literate people. Illiterate people, without the assistance of literate individuals, cannot use such platforms. Applying user-centered requirements gathered in an Ethiopian context, this paper presents the design and development of a mobile money solution that targets illiterate people. Particular emphasis is given to how illiterate users deal with cash money in their everyday life and how such practices can be mapped into financial technology design. Given the ubiquity of mobile telephony in Africa, our solution is based on the widely available, relatively inexpensive and open source Android mobile web platform. The proposed system enables illiterate individuals to count money bills, while providing the facility to accept and make payments. In so doing, we provide an example of how a pervasive technology such as smartphones can empower a hitherto often neglected user category of illiterate users
Hybrid photonic circuit for multiplexed heralded single photons
A key resource for quantum optics experiments is an on-demand source of
single and multiple photon states at telecommunication wavelengths. This letter
presents a heralded single photon source based on a hybrid technology approach,
combining high efficiency periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides,
low-loss laser inscribed circuits, and fast (>1 MHz) fibre coupled
electro-optic switches. Hybrid interfacing different platforms is a promising
route to exploiting the advantages of existing technology and has permitted the
demonstration of the multiplexing of four identical sources of single photons
to one output. Since this is an integrated technology, it provides scalability
and can immediately leverage any improvements in transmission, detection and
