    POPCORN: a Supervisory Control Simulation for Workload and Performance Research

    A multi-task simulation of a semi-automatic supervisory control system was developed to provide an environment in which training, operator strategy development, failure detection and resolution, levels of automation, and operator workload can be investigated. The goal was to develop a well-defined, but realistically complex, task that would lend itself to model-based analysis. The name of the task (POPCORN) reflects the visual display that depicts different task elements milling around waiting to be released and pop out to be performed. The operator's task was to complete each of 100 task elements that ere represented by different symbols, by selecting a target task and entering the desired a command. The simulated automatic system then completed the selected function automatically. Highly significant differences in performance, strategy, and rated workload were found as a function of all experimental manipulations (except reward/penalty)

    Repetitive task training resulted in modest improvement across a range of lower limb outcome measures, but not upper limb outcome measures. Training may be sufficient to have a small impact on activities of daily living. Interventions involving elements of repetition and task training are diverse and difficult to classify: the results presented are specific to trials where both elements are clearly present in the intervention, without major confounding by other potential mechanisms of action

    The influence of stimulus modality and task difficulty on workload and performance was investigated. The goal was to quantify the cost (in terms of response time and experienced workload) incurred when essentially serial task components shared common elements (e.g., the response to one initiated the other) which could be accomplished in parallel. The experimental tasks were based on the Fittsberg paradigm; the solution to a SternBERG-type memory task determines which of two identical FITTS targets are acquired. Previous research suggested that such functionally integrated dual tasks are performed with substantially less workload and faster response times than would be predicted by suming single-task components when both are presented in the same stimulus modality (visual). The physical integration of task elements was varied (although their functional relationship remained the same) to determine whether dual-task facilitation would persist if task components were presented in different sensory modalities. Again, it was found that the cost of performing the two-stage task was considerably less than the sum of component single-task levels when both were presented visually. Less facilitation was found when task elements were presented in different sensory modalities. These results suggest the importance of distinguishing between concurrent tasks that complete for limited resources from those that beneficially share common resources when selecting the stimulus modalities for information displays

    Attention in Depth: Disparity and Occlusion Cues Facilitate Multi-Element Visual Tracking

    Human observers can track up to five moving targets in a display with ten identical elements (Pylyshyn and Storm, 1988; Yantis, 1992). Previous experiments manipulated element trajectories to prevent intersections of element boundaries, evidently in the belief that transient overlaps among homogeneous elements make the task too hard. We examine whether depth cues such as occlusion (T-junctions) and disparity affect performance in a tracking task when element boundaries, as projected onto the two-dimensional plane of the monitor screen, are allowed to intersect. Elements move smoothly in depth, as well as in horizontal and vertical position, throughout a 7-second tracking period. A probe is then flashed, and subjects report whether the flash occurred on a target or on a non-target. Overlapping circular objects form T-junctions when shaded to appear like spheres or figure eight regions when rendered as disks. Two factors, disparity and T-junctions, are considered.     Task allocation in a distributed computing system

    A conceptual framework is examined for task allocation in distributed systems. Application and computing system parameters critical to task allocation decision processes are discussed. Task allocation techniques are addressed which focus on achieving a balance in the load distribution among the system's processors. Equalization of computing load among the processing elements is the goal. Examples of system performance are presented for specific applications. Both static and dynamic allocation of tasks are considered and system performance is evaluated using different task allocation methodologies

Assisted with linear optical elements, we experimentally demonstrate perfect discrimination between single-bit unitary operations using two methods--sequential scheme and parallel scheme.     How visual confidence on global motion is affected by local motion ambiguity and type of motion noise, and its correlation with autistic trait tendency?

    Perceptual confidence has been found to correlate with task performance in general, and is believed to be independent of stimulus features. However, certain stimulus feature could induce a subjective sense of uncertainty, which could potentially influence confidence judgments beyond task performance. The present studies aimed at assessing the effects of the ambiguity of local motion signals on perceptual confidence on a global-motion task. Participants first discriminated the global motion directions of two multiple-aperture, global-motion patterns, one generated using multiple Gabor elements and the other using multiple Plaid elements. They then performed a two-interval, forced-choice confidence task by choosing which of the two perceptual responses they were more confident in being correct. In Experiment 1, when perceptual performance was controlled by varying coherence, we found that participants chose plaids more often than Gabors, even with perceptual performance matched between the two patterns. In Experiment 2, when perceptual performance was controlled by varying luminance contrast of noisy pixels in every motion frame, such “plaid preference” in confidence bias was significantly weakened. Besides, there has been numerous studies on visual perception of autistic individuals. But not many of them has looked into the relationship between their metacognition and perceptual judgement. This study aimed at assessing the relationship between the autistic trait tendency and metacognitive process about one’s perceptual performance. Our results show that, at the same level of objective task performance, subject perceptual confidence depends on both the ambiguity of local motion signals and the type of noise. Our results also shows that there is an association between the subject perceptual confidence and the autistic trait tendency
