    Structural response of transport airplanes in crash situations

    This report highlights the results of contractural studies of transport accident data undertaken in a joint research program sponsored by the FAA and NASA. From these accident data studies it was concluded that the greatest potential for improved transport crashworthiness is in the reduction of fire related fatalities. Accident data pertaining to fuselage integrity, main landing gear collapse, fuel tank rupture, wing breaks, tearing of tank lower surfaces, and engine pod scrubbing are discussed. In those accidents where the energy absorbing protective capability of the fuselage structure is expended and the airplane experiences major structural damage, trauma caused fatalities are also discussed. The dynamic performance of current seat/restraint systems are examined but it is concluded that the accident data does not adequately define the relationship between occupant response and the dynamic interaction with the seat, floor and fuselage structure

    Shallow founded tanks are strategic structures used to store a variety of kind of liquids. The fluid develops hydrodynamic effect on solid domain of container during an earthquake. This paper provides the theoretical background for numerical model on seismic response of fluid-structure-soil interaction. The Finite Element Method (FEM) was used for seismic response of shallow founded cylindrical container. The Fluid- Structure-Soil interaction of shallow founded tank was analysed according to theories of I. Limit States - the ultimate limit state (ULS) and II. Limit States - the serviceability limit state (SLS) pursuant to EN 1997-1. Summary of the results: the maximum rotation of foundation is growing with the reduction of the stiffness of the subsoil and the vertical and horizontal bearing capacity depends on the strength properties of the subsoil

    Cargo compartment fire extinguishing system

    In all large passenger transport airplanes, halon fire bottles are used to extinguish fire in the cargo compartments. Halon as a fire-extinguishing agent, contributes to the destruction of stratospheric ozone in the atmosphere and it is banned in many countries. FAA considers halon 1301 as an effective firefighting agent due to its low toxicity and noncorrosive properties but because it damages the ozone layer, it has been phased out of production. However, it is still widely used on commercial aircraft until a suitable replacement is found. In this paper we will present an alternative approach to using halon 1301 as a fire fighting paradigm. In the proposed method, nitrogen is first extracted from the atmosphere by using the onboard air separator module it is then cooled, and pressurized into the cargo compartments to suppress any fire. Several methodologies can be used to increase the flow rate from the air separator module, to extinguish fire in cargo compartment

    The activities of the Chemical Research Projects Office at Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California are reported. The office conducts basic and applied research in the fields of polymer chemistry, computational chemistry, polymer physics, and physical and organic chemistry. It works to identify the chemical research and technology required for solutions to problems of national urgency, synchronous with the aeronautic and space effort. It conducts interdisciplinary research on chemical problems, mainly in areas of macromolecular science and fire research. The office also acts as liaison with the engineering community and assures that relevant technology is made available to other NASA centers, agencies, and industry. Recent accomplishments are listed in this report. Activities of the three research groups, Polymer Research, Aircraft Operating and Safety, and Engineering Testing, are summarized. A complete bibliography which lists all Chemical Research Projects Office publications, contracts, grants, patents, and presentations from 1975 to 1980 is included
