Optimal modeling for complex system design
The article begins with a brief introduction to the theory describing optimal data compression systems and their performance. A brief outline is then given of a representative algorithm that employs these lessons for optimal data compression system design. The implications of rate-distortion theory for practical data compression system design is then described, followed by a description of the tensions between theoretical optimality and system practicality and a discussion of common tools used in current algorithms to resolve these tensions. Next, the generalization of rate-distortion principles to the design of optimal collections of models is presented. The discussion focuses initially on data compression systems, but later widens to describe how rate-distortion theory principles generalize to model design for a wide variety of modeling applications. The article ends with a discussion of the performance benefits to be achieved using the multiple-model design algorithms
Modeling of Traceability Information System for Material Flow Control Data.
This paper focuses on data modeling for traceability of material/work flow in information
layer of manufacturing control system. The model is able to trace all associated data throughout the
product manufacturing from order to final product. Dynamic data processing of Quality and Purchase
activities are considered in data modeling as well as Order and Operation base on lots particulars. The
modeling consisted of four steps and integrated as one final model. Entity-Relationships Modeling as
data modeling methodology is proposed. The model is reengineered with Toad Data Modeler software
in physical modeling step. The developed model promises to handle fundamental issues of a
traceability system effectively. It supports for customization and real-time control of material in flow
in all levels of manufacturing processes. Through enhanced visibility and dynamic store/retrieval of
data, all traceability usages and applications is responded. Designed solution is initially applicable as
reference data model in identical lot-base traceability system
Evaluating Modelling Approaches for Medical Image Annotations
Information system designers face many challenges with regards to selecting appropriate semantic technologies and deciding on a modeling approach for their system. However, there is no clear methodology yet to evaluate “semantically enriched” information systems. In this paper we present a case study on different modeling approaches for annotating medical images and introduce a conceptual framework that can be used to analyze the fitness of information systems and help designers to spot the strengths and weaknesses of various modeling approaches as well as managing trade-offs between modeling effort and their potential benefits
MLS: Airplane system modeling
Analysis, modeling, and simulations were conducted as part of a multiyear investigation of the more important airplane-system-related items of the microwave landing system (MLS). Particular emphasis was placed upon the airplane RF system, including the antenna radiation distribution, the cabling options from the antenna to the receiver, and the overall impact of the airborne system gains and losses upon the direct-path signal structure. In addition, effort was expended toward determining the impact of the MLS upon the airplane flight management system and developing the initial stages of a fast-time MLS automatic control system simulation model. Modeling and simulation of data communication networks using SARA
The selection of an appropriate simulation language can have a profound impact on the success of a simulation study. The available options range from domain-specific simulation languages to general-purpose programming languages. These languages are often supported by a collection of tools which form a simulation system. This paper examines UCLA's SARA (Systems ARchitects' Apprentice) system and explores its' usefulness in modeling and simulating a data communications network. Spring-block model for a single-lane highway traffic
A simple one-dimensional spring-block chain with asymmetric interactions is
considered to model an idealized single-lane highway traffic. The main elements
of the system are blocks (modeling cars), springs with unidirectional
interactions (modeling distance keeping interactions between neighbors), static
and kinetic friction (modeling inertia of drivers and cars) and spatiotemporal
disorder in the values of these friction forces (modeling differences in the
driving attitudes). The traveling chain of cars correspond to the dragged
spring-block system. Our statistical analysis for the spring-block chain
predicts a non-trivial and rich complex behavior. As a function of the disorder
level in the system a dynamic phase-transition is observed. For low disorder
levels uncorrelated slidings of blocks are revealed while for high disorder
