    HMM-based Offline Recognition of Handwritten Words Crossed Out with Different Kinds of Strokes

    In this work, we investigate the recognition of words that have been crossed-out by the writers and are thus degraded. The degradation consists of one or more ink strokes that span the whole word length and simulate the signs that writers use to cross out the words. The simulated strokes are superimposed to the original clean word images. We considered two types of strokes: wave-trajectory strokes created with splines curves and line-trajectory strokes generated with the delta-lognormal model of rapid line movements. The experiments have been performed using a recognition system based on hidden Markov models and the results show that the performance decrease is moderate for single writer data and light strokes, but severe for multiple writer data

    Data-Driven Grasp Synthesis - A Survey

    We review the work on data-driven grasp synthesis and the methodologies for sampling and ranking candidate grasps. We divide the approaches into three groups based on whether they synthesize grasps for known, familiar or unknown objects. This structure allows us to identify common object representations and perceptual processes that facilitate the employed data-driven grasp synthesis technique. In the case of known objects, we concentrate on the approaches that are based on object recognition and pose estimation. In the case of familiar objects, the techniques use some form of a similarity matching to a set of previously encountered objects. Finally for the approaches dealing with unknown objects, the core part is the extraction of specific features that are indicative of good grasps. Our survey provides an overview of the different methodologies and discusses open problems in the area of robot grasping.
