    Investigation of non-binary trellis codes designed for impulsive noise environments

    PhD ThesisIt is well known that binary codes with iterative decoders can achieve near Shannon limit performance on the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, but their performance on more realistic wired or wireless channels can become degraded due to the presence of burst errors or impulsive noise. In such extreme environments, error correction alone cannot combat the serious e ect of the channel and must be combined with the signal processing techniques such as channel estimation, channel equalisation and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). However, even after the received signal has been processed, it can still contain burst errors, or the noise present in the signal maybe non Gaussian. In these cases, popular binary coding schemes such as Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) or turbo codes may not perform optimally, resulting in the degradation of performance. Nevertheless, there is still scope for the design of new non-binary codes that are more suitable for these environments, allowing us to achieve further gains in performance. In this thesis, an investigation into good non-binary trellis error-correcting codes and advanced noise reduction techniques has been carried out with the aim of enhancing the performance of wired and wireless communication networks in di erent extreme environments. These environments include, urban, indoor, pedestrian, underwater, and powerline communication (PLC). This work includes an examination of the performance of non-binary trellis codes in harsh scenarios such as underwater communications when the noise channel is additive S S noise. Similar work was also conducted for single input single output (SISO) power line communication systems for single carrier (SC) and multi carrier (MC) over realistic multi-path frequency selective channels. A further examination of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) wired and wireless systems on Middleton class A noise channel was carried out. The main focus of the project was non-binary coding schemes as it is well-known that they outperform their binary counterparts when the channel is bursty. However, few studies have investigated non-binary codes for other environments. The major novelty of this work is the comparison of the performance of non-binary trellis codes with binary trellis codes in various scenarios, leading to the conclusion that non-binary codes are, in most cases, superior in performance to binary codes. Furthermore, the theoretical bounds of SISO and MIMO binary and non-binary convolutional coded OFDM-PLC systems have been investigated for the rst time. In order to validate our results, the implementation of simulated and theoretical results have been obtained for di erent values of noise parameters and on di erent PLC channels.     Modeling and Optimization of Next-Generation Wireless Access Networks

    The ultimate goal of the next generation access networks is to provide all network users, whether they are fixed or mobile, indoor or outdoor, with high data rate connectivity, while ensuring a high quality of service. In order to realize this ambitious goal, delay, jitter, error rate and packet loss should be minimized: a goal that can only be achieved through integrating different technologies, including passive optical networks, 4th generation wireless networks, and femtocells, among others. This thesis focuses on medium access control and physical layers of future networks. In this regard, the first part of this thesis discusses techniques to improve the end-to-end quality of service in hybrid optical-wireless networks. In these hybrid networks, users are connected to a wireless base station that relays their data to the core network through an optical connection. Hence, by integrating wireless and optical parts of these networks, a smart scheduler can predict the incoming traffic to the optical network. The prediction data generated herein is then used to propose a traffic-aware dynamic bandwidth assignment algorithm for reducing the end-to-end delay. The second part of this thesis addresses the challenging problem of interference management in a two-tier macrocell/femtocell network. A high quality, high speed connection for indoor users is ensured only if the network has a high signal to noise ratio. A requirement that can be fulfilled with using femtocells in cellular networks. However, since femtocells generate harmful interference to macrocell users in proximity of them, careful analysis and realistic models should be developed to manage the introduced interference. Thus, a realistic model for femtocell interference outside suburban houses is proposed and several performance measures, e.g., signal to interference and noise ratio and outage probability are derived mathematically for further analysis. The quality of service of cellular networks can be degraded by several factors. For example, in industrial environments, simultaneous fading and strong impulsive noise significantly deteriorate the error rate performance. In the third part of this thesis, a technique to improve the bit error rate of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems in industrial environments is presented. This system is the most widely used technology in next-generation networks, and is very susceptible to impulsive noise, especially in fading channels. Mathematical analysis proves that the proposed method can effectively mitigate the degradation caused by impulsive noise and significantly improve signal to interference and noise ratio and bit error rate, even in frequency-selective fading channels

    RÉSUMÉ La croissance rapide des systèmes de communication sans fil et la rareté du spectre ont motivé les industries et les fournisseurs ouvrant dans le domaine de communication sans fil de développer des stratégies et des technologies de communication qui peuvent utiliser efficacement les ressources spectrales. La réutilisation pacifique du spectre sous-licence et sous-utilisé peut être une solution prometteuse pour certaines initiatives en cours telles que la communication mobile à haut débit, la communication machine-à-machine, et la connectivité WiFi. Un des plus gros facteurs qui empêche l'approche de cette réutilisation de fréquences est l'effet d'environnements bruyants sur les dispositifs coexistent dans la même bande de fréquence. Par conséquent, la demande pour une stratégie de coexistence pacifique entre les utilisateurs du spectre, des défis et des questions techniques qu'elle engêndre, motive notre recherche. Il est à noter que dans cette thèse, nous considérons un système pratique appelé MB-OFDM UWB (en anglais multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra wideband) pour donner un aperçu pratique de ce concept. Pour atteindre cet objectif, d'abord nous examinons le problème d'interférence des utilisateurs secondaires sur les utilisateurs principaux. A cet effet, tenant compte d'un système secondaire OFDM, nous proposons des méthodes de mise en forme du spectre pour les applications de transmission à antennes simples et multiples. Nous présentons une technique débit-efficace nommée “Enhanced active interference cancellation (E - AIC)qui est en effet capable de créer des encoches ayant des caractéristiques flexibles. Afin de résoudre le problème de dépassement du spectre causé pas la technique classique-AIC, nous utilisons une approche multi-contraintes qui à son tour cause un problème multi-contrainte de minimisation (en anglais multi-constraint minimization problem, MCMP). Cependant, un nouvel algorithme itératif basé sur la technique SVD (en anglais singular value decomposition) est proposé, permettant ainsi de réduire la complexité de la solution de MCMP. Les résultats de simulation obtenus montrent que la technique E-AIC proposée fournit de meilleures performances en termes de suppression des lobes latéraux avec 0 dB de dépassement, moins de complexité de calcul et moins de perte de débit par rapport aux méthodes AIC précédentes. Quant aux antennes multiples, nous proposons deux nouvelles techniques AIC, qui utilisent l'idée principale des approches de sélection d'antennes d'émission (en anglais transmit antenna selection, TAS). Bien que les résultats montrent que les deux techniques permettent la création d'encoche identique, la technique per-tone TAS-AIC a la plus grande efficacité spectrale. Après avoir obtenu une emission sans interférence pour le système MB-OFDM UWB, nous analysons, modélisons et atténuons le bruit impulsif au récepteur MB-OFDM UWB. Pour ce faire, d'abord, nous proposons un cadre analytique qui décrit les principales caractéristiques d'interférence d'un système à ultra large bande et saut temporel (en anglais time-hopping UWB, TH-UWB) niveau de ces paramètres de signalisation. Les résultats montrent que la distribution d'interférence dépend fortement aux paramètres de saut temporel du système TH-UWB.----------ABSTRACT The rapid growth of wireless communication systems along with the radio spectrum's scarcity and regulatory considerations have put the onus on the wireless industries and service providers to develop wireless communication strategies and technologies that can efficiently utilize the spectral resources. Hence, peaceful reuse of underutilized licensed radio frequencies (by secondary users) can be a promising solution for some ongoing initiatives such as mobile broadband, machine-to-machine applications and WiFi connectivity. One of the biggest factors that prevents the spectrum reusing approach to effectively address the spectrum scarcity, is noisy environments result from coexistence of different devices in the same frequency band. Therefore, the request for a peaceful coexistence strategy between spectrum users, which leads to various challenges, and technical issues, motivates our research. It is worth noting that, in this thesis, we consider a practical system called multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) as an underlay system to provide a practical insight into this concept. However, all the obtained results and contributions are applicable to other OFDM-based communication systems. Towards this goal, we first investigate the problem of the interference from secondary users to the primary users. For this purpose, considering an OFDM-based secondary communication system, we propose spectrum-shaping methods for single and multiple transmit antennas applications. For single antenna scenario, we present a throughput-efficient enhanced active interference cancellation (E-AIC) technique, which is indeed capable of creating notches with flexible characteristics. In order to address the spectrum overshoot problem of conventional-AIC techniques, we employed a multi-constraint approach, which leads to a multi-constraint minimization problem (MCMP). Hence, a novel iterative singular value decomposition (SVD) based algorithm is proposed to reduce the complexity of the MCMP's solution. The obtained simulation results show that the proposed enhanced-AIC technique provides higher performance in terms of sidelobes suppression with 0 dB overshoot, less computational complexity and less throughput-loss compared to previous constrained-AIC methods. For multiple transmit antennas, we propose two novel AIC techniques employing main ideas behind bulk and per-tone transmit antenna selection (TAS) approaches. Simulation results show that although both techniques provide identical notch creation, the per-tone TAS-AIC technique has higher spectral efficiency

    Evaluation Of Multicarrier Air Interfaces In The Presence Of Interference For L-Band And C-Band Air-Ground Communications

    The use of aeronautical vehicles and systems is continuously growing, and this means current aeronautical communication systems, particularly those operating in the very high frequency (VHF) aviation band, will suffer from severe congestion in some regions of the world. For example, it is estimated that air-to-ground (AG) communication traffic density will at least double by 2035 over that in 2012, based on the most-likely growth scenario for Europe. This traffic growth (worldwide) has led civil aviation authorities such as the FAA in the USA, and EuroControl in Europe, to jointly explore development of future communication infrastructures (FCI). According to international aviation systems policies, both current and future AG communication systems will be deployed in L-band (960-1164 MHz), and possibly in C-band (5030-5091 GHz) because of the favorable AG radio propagation characteristics in these bands. During the same time period as the FCI studies, the use of multicarrier communication technologies has become very mature for terrestrial communication systems, but for AG systems it is still being studied and tested. Aiming toward future demands, EuroControl and FAA sponsored work to define several new candidate AG radio systems with high data rate and high reliability. Dominant among these is now an L-Band Digital Aeronautical Communication Systems (L-DACS): L-DACS1. L-DACS1 is a multicarrier communication system based on the popular orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation technique. For airport surface area communication systems used in C-band, EuroControl and FAA also proposed another OFDM communication system based on the IEEE 802.16e standard, termed aeronautical mobile airport communication system (AeroMACS). This system has been proposed to provide the growing need of communication traffic in airport environments. In this dissertation, first we review existing and proposed aviation communication systems in VHF-band, L-band and C-band. We then focus our study on the use of multicarrier techniques in these aviation bands. We compare the popular and dominant multicarrier technique OFDM (which is used in cellular networks such long-term evolution (LTE) and wireless local area networks such as Wi-Fi) with the filterbank multicarrier (FBMC) technique. As far as we are aware, we are the first to propose and evaluate FBMC for aviation communication systems. We show, using analysis and computer simulations, along with measurement based (NASA) air-ground and airport surface channel models, that FBMC offers advantages in performance over the OFDM schemes. Via use of sharp filters in the frequency domain, FBMC reduces out of band interference. Specifically, it is more robust to high-power distance measurement equipment (DME) interference, and via replacement of guard bands with data-bearing subcarriers, FBMC can offer higher throughput than the contending L-DACS1 scheme, by up to 23%. Similar advantages over AeroMACS pertain in the airport surface channel. Our FBMC bit error ratio performance is comparable to that of the OFDM schemes, and is even better for our “spectrally-shaped” version of FBMC. For these improvements, FBMC requires a modest complexity increase. Our final contribution in this dissertation is the presentation of spectrally shaped FBMC (SS-FBMC). This idea allocates unequal power to subcarriers to contend with non-white noise or non-white interference. Our adaptive algorithm selects a minimum number of guard subcarriers and then allocates power accordingly to remaining subcarriers based on a “water-filling-like” approach. We are the first to propose such a cognitive radio technique with FBMC for aviation applications. Results show that SSFBMC improves over FBMC in both performance and throughput

    Pulse shaping methods for inter carrier interference reduction in OFDM system

    The weakness of the orthogonal freuency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is susceptible to the existence of carrier frequency offset (CFO) which causes the emergence of inter carrier interference (ICI) which causes a degradation of performance OFDM systems. This study aims to apply the suggested rectangular (REC) pulse and improved sinc-power (ISP) pulse shaping methods on OFDM system and determines ICI reduction with the effects of CFO over flat fading Rayleigh channels. The performance of each pulse shaping method is evaluated and compared based on parameter ICI power vs. normalized frequency offset, signal to interference ratio (SIR) vs. normalized frequency offset and bit error rate (BER) vs. energy bit per noise (Eb/No). The simulation result in terms of BER vs. Eb/No indicated that REC and ISP pulse shaping has better performance dealing with ICI reduction compared to OFDM system no applied pulse shaping. In addition, the ISP is able to mitigate ICI better than REC

    The LDACS1 Physical Layer Design

    The legacy DSB-AM (Double Sideband Amplitude Modulation) system used for todayâs voice communication in the VHF-band is far away of meeting the demands of increasing air traffic and associated communication load. The introduction of VDL (VHF Digital Link) Mode 2 in Europe has already unfolded the paradigm shift from voice to data communication. Legacy systems, such as DSB-AM and VDL Mode 2 are expected to continue to be used in the future. However, they have to be supplemented in the near future by a new data link technology mainly for two reasons. First, only additional communication capacity can solve the frequency congestion and accommodate the traffic growth expected within the next 10-20 years in all parts of European airspace (ICAO-WGC, 2006). Second, the modernization of the Air Traffic Management (ATM) system as performed according to the SESAR (http://www.sesarju.eu/) and NextGen (http://www.faa.gov/nextgen/) programs in Europe and the US, respectively, heavily relies on powerful data link communications which VDL Mode 2 is unable to support. Based on the conclusions of the future communications study (Budinger, 2011), the ICAO Working Group of the Whole (ICAO-WGW, 2008) has foreseen a new technology operating in the L-band as the main terrestrial component of the Future Communication Infrastructure (FCI) (Fistas, 2011) for all phases of flight. Hence, such L-band technology shall meet the future ATM needs in the en-route and the Terminal Manoeuvring Area (TMA) flight domains as well as within airports. The latter application area will be supplemented by the AeroMACS technology at many large airports (Budinger, 2011). A final choice of technology for the L-band has not been made yet. Within the future communications study, various candidate technologies were considered and evaluated. However, it was found that none of the considered technologies could be fully recommended before the spectrum compatibility between the proposed systems and the legacy systems has been proven. This will require the development of prototypes for testing in a real environment against operational legacy equipment. The future communications study has identified two technology options for the L-band Digital Aeronautical Communication System (LDACS) as the most promising candidates for meeting the requirements on a future aeronautical data link. The first option, named LDACS1, is a Frequency-Division Duplex (FDD) configuration utilizing Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM), a highly efficient multi-carrier modulation technique which enables the use of higher-order modulation schemes and Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM).     Power Line Communication (PLC) Impulsive Noise Mitigation: A Review

    Power Line Communication (PLC) is a technology which transforms the power line into pathways for the conveyance of broadband data. It has the advantage for it can avoid new installation since the current installation used for electrical power can also be used for data transmission. However, this power line channel presents a harsh environment for data transmission owing to the challenges of impulsive noise, high attenuation, selective fading and etc. Impulsive noise poses a severe challenge as its Power Spectral Density (PSD) is between 10–15dB above background noise. For good performance of the PLC system, this noise must be mitigated.  This paper presents a review of the techniques for the mitigation of impulsive noise in PLC which is classified into four categories, namely time domain, time/frequency domain, error correction code and other techniques. Time domain technique is a memoryless nonlinear technique where the signal's amplitude only changes according to a specified threshold without changing the phase.  Mitigation of impulsive noise is carried out on the received time domain signal before the demodulation FFT operation of the OFDM. Time/Frequency technique is a method of mitigating impulsive noise on the received signal at both before FFT demodulation and after FFT demodulation of the OFDM system. Error correction code technique is the application of forward error correction code by adding redundancy bits to the useful data bits for detection and possibly correction of error occurring during transmission.  Identifying the best performing technique will enhance the deployment of the technique while exploring the PLC channel capacity enhancement in the future. The best performing scheme in each of the category were selected and their BER vs SNR curves were compared with respect to the impulsive noise + awgn curve. Amongst all of these techniques, the error correction code technique had a performance that presents almost an outright elimination of impulsive noise in power line channel.
