    An agent-based model for improving museum design to enhance visitor experience.

In recent years, the museum sector has faced a number of challenges in terms of the need to enhance the potential of the experience while maintaining authenticity and credibility. For public science communication in museums, exhibition is an important medium for connecting exhibits and visitors, and as such, the study of visitors' senses and behaviours under impact of various museum layout designs has become an important research direction. The purpose of this study is to explore the recall of visitors' memories in the exhibition space by integrating images, echoes and tactile senses, and then transform memories and interactions into their own experience and knowledge base. The impact of spatial design and other design elements on visitors' memories is also explored. We have conducted Agent-based simulation, by setting up virtual visitors, exhibition spaces and artefact based on real gallery spaces, as a time-saving and cost-saving method to improve exhibition interactivity and content coherence. Meanwhile, through the simulation of this novel way, visitors can observe and predict the interactive experience between visitors and the exhibition, so as to improve the curatorial team's research on tourist behaviour and spatial design scheme. Next, the simulated data on visitors' memory recall behaviour is compared with the actual observed data to explore the authenticity of visitors' behaviour in the simulated museum. The impact of this study is by integrating a variety of shared understandings between curators, exhibition management and participants, drawing on diverse information based on experience, practice and simulation. It seeks to provide future museum- oriented practitioners, particularly in small and medium-sized museum exhibition spaces, with a novel perspective and approach to observing or predicting the experience of visitors' sensory interactions within an exhibition.     Mapping Access: Digital Humanities, Disability Justice, and Sociospatial Practice

    New digital projects use geographic information systems (GIS) and crowdsourcing applications to gather data about the accessibility of public spaces for disabled people. While these projects offer useful tools, their approach to technology and disability is often depoliticized. Compliance-based maps take disability for granted as medical impairment and do not consider mapping as a humanistic and activist practice. This essay draws on digital humanities theories of "thick mapping" and critical disability theories of public citizenship to offer critical accessibility mapping as an alternative to compliance-focused mapping. Using Mapping Access as a case study, I frame digital mapping as a question-generating device, a site of narrative praxis, rather than mere data visualization. I argue that critical accessibility mapping offers a digital humanities-informed model of "sociospatial practice," with several distinct benefits: it recognizes marginalized experts; redefines the concepts of data, crowdsourcing, and public participation; offers new stories about disability and public belonging; and materializes the principles of disability justice, an early twentieth-century movement emphasizing intersectionality and collective access

    A Seeing Place – Connecting Physical and Virtual Spaces

    In the experience and design of spaces today, we meet both reality and virtuality. But how is the relation between real and virtual construed? How can we as researchers and designers contribute to resolving the physical-virtual divide regarding spaces? This thesis explores the relations between the physical and the virtual and investigates ways of connecting physical and virtual space, both in theory and practice.\ua0The basic concepts of the thesis are Space, Place, and Stage. The central idea is that the stage is a strong conceptual metaphor that has the capacity to work as a unifying concept relating physical and virtual spaces and forming a place for attention, agreements, and experience – A Seeing Place. The concept of seeing place comes from the Greek word theatre, meaning a “place for seeing”, both in the sense of looking at and understanding.\ua0In certain situations, the relations between physical and virtual spaces become important for users’ experience and understanding of these situations. This thesis presents seven cases of physical-virtual spaces, in the field of architectural and exhibition design. The method of these studies is research by design. The discussion then focuses on how each setting works as a stage, and how conceptual metaphors can contribute to the connection between physical and virtual spaces.\ua0Building upon the explorations and experiments in different domains, the thesis contains a collection of seven papers concerning the relations between physical and virtual space in different contexts outside the world of theatre. These papers range from more technical about Virtual Reality (design of networked collaborative spaces) to more conceptual about staging (methods in interaction design) and virtual space (using a transdisciplinary approach).\ua0The results of those studies suggest that the Stage metaphor of a physical-virtual space can contribute to the elucidating of relations between physical and virtual spaces in number of ways. Conceptually, the stage metaphor links together the semiotic and the hermeneutic views of space and place. And, from a practice-based perspective, A Seeing Place view opens up the way to creating contemporary spaces and resolving the physical-virtual divide
