    The Influence of Multimedia Production Knowledge on the Design Decisions of the Instructional Designer

    This study explored the interaction of multimedia production competencies of expert and novice instructional designers on the design decisions made during the instructional design process / workflow. This multiple measures study used qualitative survey instruments to access and measure the production competencies of participants, then a design aloud protocol to capture and measure the instructional design decision-making process for those same participants. A follow-on interview after the initial design aloud session was conducted in order to triangulate and confirm any trends or findings uncovered during the earlier design aloud session. Ultimately, the objective of this study was to provide some evidence that suggests whether certain production skills are influencing instructional design decision-making. Employer influence on the instructional designer’s decision-making was also explored. Results indicated that a substantial number of instructional designers (n=30) who participated in this study were selecting media as a preliminary step in their workflow process, and were often then using analysis as a measure to confirm the early media selection. Expert instructional designers appeared to be less susceptible to the early media selection behavior, though not immune. Results indicate that one reason the expert instructional designers were less likely to adopt media as a preliminary instructional design step was that the experts conducted a more diverse set of analysis activities. Additionally, results indicated that instructional designers were often experiencing pressure to adopt media based on employer demands, and project constraints such as budget and time

    This paper proposes the concept of collaborative production as a focus of concern within the general area of collaborative work. We position the concept with respect to McGrath's framework for small group dynamics and the more familiar collaboration processes of awareness, coordination, and communication (McGrath 1991). After reviewing research issues and computer-based support for these interacting aspects of collaboration, we turn to a discussion of implications for how to design improved support for collaborative production. We illustrate both the challenges of collaborative production and our design implications with a collaborative map-updating scenario drawn from the work domain of geographical information systems

    Survey and Implications for the Design of New 3D Audio Authoring Tools

    International audience3D audio production tools vary from low-level programming libraries to higher-level user interfaces that are used across a wide range of applications. However, many of the user interfaces for authoring 3D audio parameters are underdeveloped, forcing users to resort to ad hoc solutions with other tools or programming languages. Identifying these limitations and custom methods are needed to inform the development of new user interfaces. Towards this end, an on-line survey was conducted with current practitioners to gather ethnographic information on their tools, methods, and opinions. Results of the survey revealed specific methods and limitations within authoring techniques and 3D audio production with regards to Audio Rendering and Recording, Visual Feedback, Functionality, and Workflow Integration. These results also shed light on three basic tasks that have to be performed interactively with 3D audio production tools: Defining the Rendering Space, Creation and Manipulation of Audio Objects, and Monitoring with Audio/Visual Feedback. This classification helps identifying the needs for 3D audio tools that address issues within the workflow and low-level functionality of systems

    Facilitating the creation of interactive multi-device Learning Objects using an online authoring tool

    Learning Objects facilitate reuse leading to cost and time savings as well as to the enhancement of the quality of educational resources. However, teachers find it difficult to create or to find high quality Learning Objects, and the ones they find need to be customized. Teachers can overcome this problem using suitable authoring systems that enable them to create high quality Learning Objects with little effort. This paper presents an open source online e-Learning authoring tool called ViSH Editor together with four novel interactive Learning Objects that can be created with it: Flashcards, Virtual Tours, Enriched Videos and Interactive Presentations. All these Learning Objects are created as web applications, which can be accessed via mobile devices. Besides, they can be exported to SCORM including their metadata in IEEE LOM format. All of them are described in the paper including an example of each. This approach for creating Learning Objects was validated through two evaluations: a survey among authors and a formal quality evaluation of 209 Learning Objects created with the tool. The results show that ViSH Editor facilitates educators the creation of high quality Learning Objects
