    Planning Visual Inspection Tours for a 3D Dubins Airplane Model in an Urban Environment

    This paper investigates the problem of planning a minimum-length tour for a three-dimensional Dubins airplane model to visually inspect a series of targets located on the ground or exterior surface of objects in an urban environment. Objects are 2.5D extruded polygons representing buildings or other structures. A visibility volume defines the set of admissible (occlusion-free) viewing locations for each target that satisfy feasible airspace and imaging constraints. The Dubins traveling salesperson problem with neighborhoods (DTSPN) is extended to three dimensions with visibility volumes that are approximated by triangular meshes. Four sampling algorithms are proposed for sampling vehicle configurations within each visibility volume to define vertices of the underlying DTSPN. Additionally, a heuristic approach is proposed to improve computation time by approximating edge costs of the 3D Dubins airplane with a lower bound that is used to solve for a sequence of viewing locations. The viewing locations are then assigned pitch and heading angles based on their relative geometry.     Coverage and Time-optimal Motion Planning for Autonomous Vehicles

    Autonomous vehicles are rapidly advancing with a variety of applications, such as area surveillance, environment mapping, and intelligent transportation. These applications require coverage and/or time-optimal motion planning, where the major challenges include uncertainties in the environment, motion constraints of vehicles, limited energy resources and potential failures. While dealing with these challenges in various capacities, this dissertation addresses three fundamental motion planning problems: (1) single-robot complete coverage in unknown environment, (2) multi-robot resilient and efficient coverage in unknown environment, and (3) time-optimal risk-aware motion planning for curvature-constrained vehicles. First, the ε* algorithm is developed for online coverage path planning in unknown environment using a single autonomous vehicle. It is computationally efficient, and can generate the desired back-and-forth path with less turns and overlappings. ε* prevents the local extrema problem, thus can guarantee complete coverage. Second, the CARE algorithm is developed which extends ε* for multi-robot resilient and efficient coverage in unknown environment. In case of failures, CARE guarantees complete coverage via dynamic task reallocations of other vehicles, hence provides resilience. Moreover, it reallocates idling vehicles to support others in their tasks, hence improves efficiency. Finally, the T* algorithm is developed to find the time-optimal risk-aware path for curvature-constrained vehicles. We present a novel risk function based on the concept of collision time, and integrate it with the time cost for optimization. The above-mentioned algorithms have been validated via simulations in complex scenarios and/or real experiments, and the results have shown clear advantages over existing popular approaches

    On the motion planning & control of nonlinear robotic systems

    In the last decades, we saw a soaring interest in autonomous robots boosted not only by academia and industry, but also by the ever in- creasing demand from civil users. As a matter of fact, autonomous robots are fast spreading in all aspects of human life, we can see them clean houses, navigate through city traffic, or harvest fruits and vegetables. Almost all commercial drones already exhibit unprecedented and sophisticated skills which makes them suitable for these applications, such as obstacle avoidance, simultaneous localisation and mapping, path planning, visual-inertial odometry, and object tracking. The major limitations of such robotic platforms lie in the limited payload that can carry, in their costs, and in the limited autonomy due to finite battery capability. For this reason researchers start to develop new algorithms able to run even on resource constrained platforms both in terms of computation capabilities and limited types of endowed sensors, focusing especially on very cheap sensors and hardware. The possibility to use a limited number of sensors allowed to scale a lot the UAVs size, while the implementation of new efficient algorithms, performing the same task in lower time, allows for lower autonomy. However, the developed robots are not mature enough to completely operate autonomously without human supervision due to still too big dimensions (especially for aerial vehicles), which make these platforms unsafe for humans, and the high probability of numerical, and decision, errors that robots may make. In this perspective, this thesis aims to review and improve the current state-of-the-art solutions for autonomous navigation from a purely practical point of view. In particular, we deeply focused on the problems of robot control, trajectory planning, environments exploration, and obstacle avoidance
