This Far, No Further: Introducing Virtual Borders to Mobile Robots Using a Laser Pointer
We address the problem of controlling the workspace of a 3-DoF mobile robot.
In a human-robot shared space, robots should navigate in a human-acceptable way
according to the users' demands. For this purpose, we employ virtual borders,
that are non-physical borders, to allow a user the restriction of the robot's
workspace. To this end, we propose an interaction method based on a laser
pointer to intuitively define virtual borders. This interaction method uses a
previously developed framework based on robot guidance to change the robot's
navigational behavior. Furthermore, we extend this framework to increase the
flexibility by considering different types of virtual borders, i.e. polygons
and curves separating an area. We evaluated our method with 15 non-expert users
concerning correctness, accuracy and teaching time. The experimental results
revealed a high accuracy and linear teaching time with respect to the border
length while correctly incorporating the borders into the robot's navigational
map. Finally, our user study showed that non-expert users can employ our

Collaborative trails in e-learning environments
This deliverable focuses on collaboration within groups of learners, and hence collaborative trails. We begin by reviewing the theoretical background to collaborative learning and looking at the kinds of support that computers can give to groups of learners working collaboratively, and then look more deeply at some of the issues in designing environments to support collaborative learning trails and at tools and techniques, including collaborative filtering, that can be used for analysing collaborative trails. We then review the state-of-the-art in supporting collaborative learning in three different areas â experimental academic systems, systems using mobile technology (which are also generally academic), and commercially available systems. The final part of the deliverable presents three scenarios that show where technology that supports groups working collaboratively and producing collaborative trails may be heading in the near future
Experiences on a motivational learning approach for robotics in undergraduate courses
This paper presents an educational experience carried out in robotics undergraduate courses from two
different degrees: Computer Science and Industrial Engineering, having students with diverse
capabilities and motivations. The experience compares two learning strategies for the practical
lessons of such courses: one relies on code snippets in Matlab to cope with typical robotic problems
like robot motion, localization, and mapping, while the second strategy opts for using the ROS
framework for the development of algorithms facing a competitive challenge, e.g. exploration
algorithms. The obtained studentsâ opinions were instructive, reporting, for example, that although they
consider harder to master ROS when compared to Matlab, it might be more useful in their (robotic
related) professional careers, which enhanced their disposition to study it. They also considered that
the challenge-exercises, in addition to motivate them, helped to develop their skills as engineers to a
greater extent than the skeleton-code based ones. These and other conclusions will be useful in

Crucial to the commercial exploitation of any service combining UMTS and DVB-T is the availability of standardized APIâs adapted to the hybrid UMTS and DVB-T network and to the technical limitations of mobile/portable terminals. Enabling Communication Technologies for Automated Unmanned Vehicles in Industry 4.0
Within the context of Industry 4.0, mobile robot systems such as automated
guided vehicles (AGVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are one of the major
areas challenging current communication and localization technologies. Due to
stringent requirements on latency and reliability, several of the existing
solutions are not capable of meeting the performance required by industrial
automation applications. Additionally, the disparity in types and applications
of unmanned vehicle (UV) calls for more flexible communication technologies in
order to address their specific requirements. In this paper, we propose several
use cases for UVs within the context of Industry 4.0 and consider their
respective requirements. We also identify wireless technologies that support

Effects of spatial ability on multi-robot control tasks
Working with large teams of robots is a very complex and demanding task for any operator and individual differences in spatial ability could significantly affect that performance. In the present study, we examine data from two earlier experiments to investigate the effects of ability for perspective-taking on performance at an urban search and rescue (USAR) task using a realistic simulation and alternate displays. We evaluated the participants' spatial ability using a standard measure of spatial orientation and examined the divergence of performance in accuracy and speed in locating victims, and perceived workload. Our findings show operators with higher spatial ability experienced less workload and marked victims more precisely. An interaction was found for the experimental image queue display for which participants with low spatial ability improved significantly in their accuracy in marking victims over the traditional streaming video display.
