    Field-Induced Two-Step Phase Transitions in the Singlet Ground State Triangular Antiferromagnet CsFeBr3_3

    The ground state of the stacked triangular antiferromagnet CsFeBr3_3 is a spin singlet due to the large single ion anisotropy D(Sz)2D(S^z)^2. The field-induced magnetic ordering in this compound was investigated by the magnetic susceptibility, the magnetization process and specific heat measurements for an external field parallel to the cc-axis. Unexpectedly, two phase transitions were observed in the magnetic field HH higher than 3 T. The phase diagram for temperature versus magnetic field was obtained.     Forced Stratified Turbulence: Successive Transitions with Reynolds Number

    Numerical simulations are made for forced turbulence at a sequence of increasing values of Reynolds number, R, keeping fixed a strongly stable, volume-mean density stratification. At smaller values of R, the turbulent velocity is mainly horizontal, and the momentum balance is approximately cyclostrophic and hydrostatic. This is a regime dominated by so-called pancake vortices, with only a weak excitation of internal gravity waves and large values of the local Richardson number, Ri, everywhere. At higher values of R there are successive transitions to (a) overturning motions with local reversals in the density stratification and small or negative values of Ri; (b) growth of a horizontally uniform vertical shear flow component; and (c) growth of a large-scale vertical flow component. Throughout these transitions, pancake vortices continue to dominate the large-scale part of the turbulence, and the gravity wave component remains weak except at small scales.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures (submitted to Phys.     Insulator-metal-insulator transition and selective spectral weight transfer in a disordered strongly correlated system

    We investigate the metal insulator transitions at finite temperature for the Hubbard model with diagonal alloy disorder. We solve the dynamical mean field theory equations with the non crossing approximation and we use the coherent potential approximation to handle disorder. The excitation spectrum is given for various correlation strength UU and disorder. Two successive metal insulator transitions are observed at integer filling values as UU is increased. An important selective transfer of spectral weight arises upon doping. The strong influence of the temperature on the low energy dynamics is studied in details.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Particle rearrangements during transitions between local minima of the potential energy landscape of a supercooled Lennard-Jones liquid

    The potential energy landscape (PEL) of supercooled binary Lennard-Jones (BLJ) mixtures exhibits local minima, or inherent structures (IS), which are organized into meta-basins (MB). We study the particle rearrangements related to transitions between both successive IS and successive MB for a small 80:20 BLJ system near the mode-coupling temperature T_MCT. The analysis includes the displacements of individual particles, the localization of the rearrangements and the relevance of string-like motion. We find that the particle rearrangements during IS and MB transitions do not change significantly at T_MCT. Further, it is demonstrated that IS and MB dynamics are spatially heterogeneous and facilitated by string-like motion. To investigate the mechanism of string-like motion, we follow the particle rearrangements during suitable sequences of IS transitions. We find that most strings observed after a series of transitions do not move coherently during a single transition, but subunits of different sizes are active at different times. Several findings suggest that the occurrence of a successful string enables the system to exit a MB. Moreover, we show that the particle rearrangements during two consecutive MB transitions are basically uncorrelated. Specifically, different groups of particles are highly mobile during subsequent MB transitions. Finally, the relation between the features of the PEL and the relaxation processes in supercooled liquids is discussed.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure

    The tensor renormalization group study of the general spin-S Blume-Capel model

    We focus on the special situation of D=2JD=2J of the general spin-S Blume-Capel model on the square lattice. Under the infinitesimal external magnetic field, the phase transition behaviors due to the thermal fluctuations are discussed by the newly developed tensor renormalization group method. For the case of the integer spin-S, the system will undergo SS first-order phase transitions with the successive symmetry breaking with the magnetization M=S,S1,...0M=S,S-1,...0. For the half-integer spin-S, there are similar S1/2S-1/2 first order phase transition with M=S,S1,...1/2M=S,S-1,...1/2 stepwise structure, in addition, there is a continuous phase transition due to the spin-flip Z2Z_2 symmetry breaking. In the low temperature regions, all first-order phase transitions are accompanied by the successive disappearance of the optional spin-component pairs(s,ss,-s), furthermore, the critical temperature for the nth first-order phase transition is the same, independent of the value of the spin-S. In the absence of the magnetic field, the visualization parameter characterizing the intrinsic degeneracy of the different phases clearly demonstrates the phase transition process.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    Integer filling metal insulator transitions in the degenerate Hubbard model

    We obtain exact numerical solutions of the degenerate Hubbard model in the limit of large dimensions (or large lattice connectivity). Successive Mott-Hubbard metal insulator transitions at integer fillings occur at intermediate values of the interaction and low enough temperature in the paramagnetic phase.
