    Scalable data abstractions for distributed parallel computations

    The ability to express a program as a hierarchical composition of parts is an essential tool in managing the complexity of software and a key abstraction this provides is to separate the representation of data from the computation. Many current parallel programming models use a shared memory model to provide data abstraction but this doesn't scale well with large numbers of cores due to non-determinism and access latency. This paper proposes a simple programming model that allows scalable parallel programs to be expressed with distributed representations of data and it provides the programmer with the flexibility to employ shared or distributed styles of data-parallelism where applicable. It is capable of an efficient implementation, and with the provision of a small set of primitive capabilities in the hardware, it can be compiled to operate directly on the hardware, in the same way stack-based allocation operates for subroutines in sequential machines

    Elevating commodity storage with the SALSA host translation layer

    To satisfy increasing storage demands in both capacity and performance, industry has turned to multiple storage technologies, including Flash SSDs and SMR disks. These devices employ a translation layer that conceals the idiosyncrasies of their mediums and enables random access. Device translation layers are, however, inherently constrained: resources on the drive are scarce, they cannot be adapted to application requirements, and lack visibility across multiple devices. As a result, performance and durability of many storage devices is severely degraded. In this paper, we present SALSA: a translation layer that executes on the host and allows unmodified applications to better utilize commodity storage. SALSA supports a wide range of single- and multi-device optimizations and, because is implemented in software, can adapt to specific workloads.     BAG : Managing GPU as buffer cache in operating systems

    This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of BAG, a system that manages GPU as the buffer cache in operating systems. Unlike previous uses of GPUs, which have focused on the computational capabilities of GPUs, BAG is designed to explore a new dimension in managing GPUs in heterogeneous systems where the GPU memory is an exploitable but always ignored resource. With the carefully designed data structures and algorithms, such as concurrent hashtable, log-structured data store for the management of GPU memory, and highly-parallel GPU kernels for garbage collection, BAG achieves good performance under various workloads. In addition, leveraging the existing abstraction of the operating system not only makes the implementation of BAG non-intrusive, but also facilitates the system deployment

    Spatial optimization for land use allocation: accounting for sustainability concerns

    Land-use allocation has long been an important area of research in regional science. Land-use patterns are fundamental to the functions of the biosphere, creating interactions that have substantial impacts on the environment. The spatial arrangement of land uses therefore has implications for activity and travel within a region. Balancing development, economic growth, social interaction, and the protection of the natural environment is at the heart of long-term sustainability. Since land-use patterns are spatially explicit in nature, planning and management necessarily must integrate geographical information system and spatial optimization in meaningful ways if efficiency goals and objectives are to be achieved. This article reviews spatial optimization approaches that have been relied upon to support land-use planning. Characteristics of sustainable land use, particularly compactness, contiguity, and compatibility, are discussed and how spatial optimization techniques have addressed these characteristics are detailed.     Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Channel Allocation for Wireless LANs with Graph Convolutional Networks

    Last year, IEEE 802.11 Extremely High Throughput Study Group (EHT Study Group) was established to initiate discussions on new IEEE 802.11 features. Coordinated control methods of the access points (APs) in the wireless local area networks (WLANs) are discussed in EHT Study Group. The present study proposes a deep reinforcement learning-based channel allocation scheme using graph convolutional networks (GCNs). As a deep reinforcement learning method, we use a well-known method double deep Q-network. In densely deployed WLANs, the number of the available topologies of APs is extremely high, and thus we extract the features of the topological structures based on GCNs. We apply GCNs to a contention graph where APs within their carrier sensing ranges are connected to extract the features of carrier sensing relationships. Additionally, to improve the learning speed especially in an early stage of learning, we employ a game theory-based method to collect the training data independently of the neural network model. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method can appropriately control the channels when compared to extant methods
