Latent Semantic Learning with Structured Sparse Representation for Human Action Recognition
This paper proposes a novel latent semantic learning method for extracting
high-level features (i.e. latent semantics) from a large vocabulary of abundant
mid-level features (i.e. visual keywords) with structured sparse
representation, which can help to bridge the semantic gap in the challenging
task of human action recognition. To discover the manifold structure of
midlevel features, we develop a spectral embedding approach to latent semantic
learning based on L1-graph, without the need to tune any parameter for graph
construction as a key step of manifold learning. More importantly, we construct
the L1-graph with structured sparse representation, which can be obtained by
structured sparse coding with its structured sparsity ensured by novel L1-norm
hypergraph regularization over mid-level features. In the new embedding space,
we learn latent semantics automatically from abundant mid-level features
through spectral clustering. The learnt latent semantics can be readily used
for human action recognition with SVM by defining a histogram intersection
kernel. Different from the traditional latent semantic analysis based on topic
models, our latent semantic learning method can explore the manifold structure
of mid-level features in both L1-graph construction and spectral embedding,
which results in compact but discriminative high-level features. The
experimental results on the commonly used KTH action dataset and unconstrained

Abnormal Event Detection in Videos using Spatiotemporal Autoencoder
We present an efficient method for detecting anomalies in videos. Recent
applications of convolutional neural networks have shown promises of
convolutional layers for object detection and recognition, especially in
images. However, convolutional neural networks are supervised and require
labels as learning signals. We propose a spatiotemporal architecture for
anomaly detection in videos including crowded scenes. Our architecture includes
two main components, one for spatial feature representation, and one for
learning the temporal evolution of the spatial features. Experimental results
on Avenue, Subway and UCSD benchmarks confirm that the detection accuracy of
our method is comparable to state-of-the-art methods at a considerable speed of
up to 140 fps
Rain Removal in Traffic Surveillance: Does it Matter?
Varying weather conditions, including rainfall and snowfall, are generally
regarded as a challenge for computer vision algorithms. One proposed solution
to the challenges induced by rain and snowfall is to artificially remove the
rain from images or video using rain removal algorithms. It is the promise of
these algorithms that the rain-removed image frames will improve the
performance of subsequent segmentation and tracking algorithms. However, rain
removal algorithms are typically evaluated on their ability to remove synthetic
rain on a small subset of images. Currently, their behavior is unknown on
real-world videos when integrated with a typical computer vision pipeline. In
this paper, we review the existing rain removal algorithms and propose a new
dataset that consists of 22 traffic surveillance sequences under a broad
variety of weather conditions that all include either rain or snowfall. We
propose a new evaluation protocol that evaluates the rain removal algorithms on
their ability to improve the performance of subsequent segmentation, instance
segmentation, and feature tracking algorithms under rain and snow. If
successful, the de-rained frames of a rain removal algorithm should improve
segmentation performance and increase the number of accurately tracked
features. The results show that a recent single-frame-based rain removal
algorithm increases the segmentation performance by 19.7% on our proposed
dataset, but it eventually decreases the feature tracking performance and
showed mixed results with recent instance segmentation methods. However, the
best video-based rain removal algorithm improves the feature tracking accuracy
