Risk Mitigation and Risk Absorption in IOS: A Proposed Investigative Study

This study examines the risk consequences of participation in inter-organisational information systems (IOS). The research aims to identify the risk mitigation and risk absorption impacts of IOS participation and evaluate the extent to which these impacts affect participation decisions. Prior research has called for a greater understanding of risks associated with IS. This paper presents a synthesis of the research on IS risk and illustrates that, to date, this call has been addressed primarily by one-dimensional studies. The paper highlights the changing context of inter-firm trade illustrating its increased reliance on networked collaboration. What remains uncertain is the nature and consequences of risk within this context. The paper presents a framework that will form the basis of the proposed research into the risk mitigation and risk absorption consequences of IOS participation

e-HR Systems Implementation: A Conceptual Framework

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) enable innovative ways of carrying on routine organizational tasks via the power of virtual work environment. Piggy-backing on the success of E-commerce systems, organizations are increasingly making use of Web-based Human Resource Management (e-HR) systems. These systems offer organizations the promise of huge performance improvement as well as of overhauling the entire HR function itself. This latter possibility is expected to offer competitive advantage to organizations. However, it is not known (a) at what level of sophistication should organizations pitch their e-HR systems and (b) what contextual factors moderate the relationship between e-HR systems implementation and their benefits. In this research-in-progress paper we offer a conceptual framework and a research plan to develop a theory of e-HR systems implementation

Examining Drivers and Impacts of Informatization in Shanghai Manufacturing Firms

With careful theoretical development and empirical data examination, this paper investigates several key factors that influence the IT usage in Shanghai firms: technology resource, human resource and environment resource. On the basis of the resource-based view and the process model, the study imports government regulation policies, as well as e-government actions, as environmental resource to affect firms’ IT usage. By surveying 398 manufacturing firms in Shanghai and statistically analyzing the field data using structural equation modeling technique, the study contributes several insights to the IT usage in Chinese firms. First of all, this study sheds lights on the value creation process of firms’ informatization in Shanghai manufacturing industry and validates the route from IT investment to value realization. Second, the findings suggest that government promotion policies have significant impacts on manufacturing firms’ technology infrastructure and IT management decision. However, there is no evidence showing the government impact on firms’ IT usage level

Business Process Modeling for Successful Implementation of Interorganizational Systems

Studies show that the physical implementation of an interorganizational business process or system can be a major source of operational problems and reduced business benefits. Better process modeling has been advocated as a solution. Although powerful modeling tools exist, current practice often gives short-shrift to documenting the physical implementation details that can create or exacerbate such problems. In this paper we describe the modeling approach we devised for the interorganizational business processes and systems we observe in our ongoing fieldwork. Our approach involves using allowable extensions to a popular modeling notation (BPMN), although other modeling tools would work equally well. We illustrate the benefit of our approach in the case of the Internet Payment Platform, a pilot project of the United States Department of the Treasury

Cross-Organizational and Cross-Border IS/IT Collaboration: A Literature Review

The topic of collaboration in cross-organizational and cross-border settings is an emerging subfield of information systems research. This paper presents a compressive literature review of 52 research papers, published from 2000 to 2007, in four leading journals. The focus of the analysis are topics of investigation, sources of data, and the underlying theories. The results indicate that most of the research still focuses on a limited number of technical issues related to inter-organizational systems adoption. The identified research gaps which represent promising research opportunities are discussed

An EDI Transaction Set Development Lifecycle (TSDL): A Case Study in the Food Manufacturing Industry

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is widely regarded by organizations worldwide as the business standard for the timely and secure exchange of electronic business transactions in an expanding global marketplace. While numerous research efforts have explored how the adoption, implementation, and integration of this technology can impact an organization\u27s technical, organizational, and competitive environment - few studies have documented the process used by organizations to implement EDI transaction sets with trading partners. This paper advances an innovative lifecycle used by a food manufacturing company to successfully design, implement, and test an EDI transaction set. This paper also describes how this transaction set development lifecycle (TDSL) can be integrated into an organization\u27s standard systems development lifecycle (SDLC) to ensure the timely completion of IT projects. Finally, a discussion of the impact of the TDSL on the organization\u27s business practices is presented

How Different Types of IS Assets Account for Synergy-Enabled Value in Multi-Unit Firms: Mapping of Critical Success Factors and Key Performance Indicators

Rooted in a longstanding tradition, research and practice strives to determine how to derive business value from IT investments. This applies particularly to the neglected research area of multi-unit firms, where there is still a high potential to enhance IT synergies. Our study addresses important research gaps in IT business value research. First, we investigate how different of types of IS assets, i.e., infrastructural, transactional, and strategic IS, account for cross-unit synergies to create business value. Second, we map critical success factors and key performance indicators of this value creation process in order to open the “grey box” in IT business value research. An explorative multiple-case study methodology with five case sites is applied. Our results reveal that these different types of IS assets account for a different degree of cost and value synergies, support diverse critical success factors, and require distinct measurement approaches in the form of KPIs
