On the market consistent valuation of fish farms: using the real option approach and salmon futures
We consider the optimal harvesting problem for a fish farmer in a model which accounts
for stochastic prices featuring Schwartz (1997) two factor price dynamics. Unlike any
other literature in this context, we take account of the existence of a newly established
market in salmon futures, which determines risk premia and other relevant variables,
that influence risk averse fish farmers in their harvesting decision. We consider the
cases of single and infinite rotations. The value function of the harvesting problem
determined in our arbitrage free setup constitutes the fair values of lease and ownership
of the fish farm when correctly accounting for price risk. The data set used for this analysis contains a large set of futures contracts with different maturities traded
at the Fish Pool market between 12/06/2006 and 22/03/2012. We assess the optimal
strategy, harvesting time and value against two alternative setups. The first alternative
involves simple strategies which lack managerial flexibility, the second alternative allows
for managerial flexibility and risk aversion as modeled by a constant relative risk
aversion utility function, but without access to the salmon futures market. In both
cases, the loss in project value can be very significant, and in the second case is only
negligible for extremely low levels of risk aversion. In consequence, for a risk averse
fish farmer, the presence of a salmon futures market as well as managerial flexibility
are highly important
Heterogeneity in Risky Choice Behaviour in a Broad Population
We analyse risk preferences using an experiment with real incentives in a representative sample of 1,422 Dutch respondents. Our econometric model incorporates four structural parameters that vary with observed and unobserved characteristics: Utility curvature, loss aversion, preferences towards the timing of uncertainty resolution, and the propensity to choose randomly rather than on the basis of preferences. We find that all four parameters contribute to explaining choice behaviour. The structural parameters are significantly associated with socio-economic variables, but it is essential to incorporate unobserved heterogeneity in each of them to match the rich variety of choice patterns in the data.risk aversion, loss aversion, uncertainty resolution, field experiments

Choices under Risk in Rural Peru
This paper estimates the risk preferences of cotton farmers in Southern Peru, using the results from a multiple-price-list lottery game. Assuming that preferences conform to two of the leading models of decision under risk--Expected Utility Theory (EUT) and Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT)--we find strong evidence of moderate risk aversion. Once we include individual characteristics in the estimation of risk parameters, we observe that farmers use subjective nonlinear probability weighting, a behavior consistent with CPT. Interestingly, when we allow for preference heterogeneity via the estimation of mixture models--where the proportion of subjects who behave according to EUT or to CPT is endogenously determined--we find that the majority of farmers' choices are best explained by CPT. We further hypothesize that the multiple switching behavior observed in our sample can be explained by nonlinear probability weighting made in a context of large random calculation mistakes; the evidence found on this regard is mixed. Finally, we find that attaining higher education is the single most important individual characteristic correlated with risk preferences, a result that suggests a connection between cognitive abilities and behavior towards risk.
Risk Spillovers and Hedging: Why Do Firms Invest Too Much in Systemic Risk?
In this paper we show that free entry decisions may be socially inefficient, even in a perfectly competitive homogeneous goods market with non-lumpy investments. In our model, inefficient entry decisions are the result of risk-aversion of incumbent producers and consumers, combined with incomplete financial markets which limit risk-sharing between market actors. Investments in productive assets affect the distribution of equilibrium prices and quantities, and create risk spillovers. From a societal perspective, entrants underinvest in technologies that would reduce systemic sector risk, and may overinvest in risk-increasing technologies. The inefficiency is shown to disappear when a complete financial market of tradable risk-sharing instruments is available, although the introduction of any individual tradable instrument may actually decrease efficiency. Dynamic Field Experiments in Development Economics: Risk Valuation in Morocco, Kenya, and Peru
The effective design and implementation of interventions that reduce vulnerability and poverty require a solid understanding of underlying poverty dynamics and associated behavioral responses. Stochastic and dynamic benefit streams can make it difficult for the poor to learn the value of such interventions to them. We explore how dynamic field experiments can help (i) intended beneficiaries to learn and understand these complicated benefit streams, and (ii) researchers to better understand how the poor respond to risk when faced with nonlinear welfare dynamics. A stochastic multiple players multi-issues bargaining model for the Piave river basin
The objective of this paper is to investigate the usefulness of non-cooperative bargaining theory for the analysis of negotiations on water allocation and management. We explore the impacts of different economic incentives, a stochastic environment and varying individual preferences on players’ strategies and equilibrium outcomes through numerical simulations of a multilateral, multiple issues, non-cooperative bargaining model of water allocation in the Piave River Basin, in the North East of Italy. Players negotiate in an alternating-offer manner over the sharing of water resources (quantity and quality). Exogenous uncertainty over the size of the negotiated amount of water is introduced to capture the fact that water availability is not known with certainty to negotiating players. We construct the players’ objective function with their direct input. We then test the applicability of our multiple players, multi-issues, stochastic framework to a specific water allocation problem and conduct comparative static analyses to assess sources of bargaining power.
