One-loop stabilization of the fuzzy four-sphere via softly broken SUSY
We describe a stabilization mechanism for fuzzy in the Euclidean IIB
matrix model due to vacuum energy in the presence of a positive mass term. The
one-loop effective potential for the radius contains an attractive contribution
attributed to supergravity, while the mass term induces a repulsive
contribution for small radius due to SUSY breaking. This leads to a
stabilization of the radius. The mechanism should be pertinent to recent
results on the genesis of 3+1-dimensional space-time in the Minkowskian IIB
model.Comment: 28 pages, 3 figures. V2: typos fixed, improved discussion, published

Supersymmetry Breaking and Moduli Stabilization with Anomalous U(1) Gauge Symmetry
We examine the effects of anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry on soft
supersymmetry breaking terms while incorporating the stabilization of the
modulus-axion multiplet responsible for the Green-Schwarz (GS) anomaly
cancellation mechanism. In case of the KKLT stabilization of the GS modulus,
soft terms are determined by the GS modulus mediation, the anomaly mediation
and the U(1)_A mediation which are generically comparable to each other,
thereby yielding the mirage mediation pattern of superparticle masses at low
energy scale. Independently of the mechanism of moduli stabilization and
supersymmetry breaking, the U(1)_A D-term potential can not be an uplifting
potential for de Sitter vacuum when the gravitino mass is smaller than the
Planck scale by many orders of magnitude. We also discuss some features of the
supersymmetry breaking by red-shifted anti-brane which is a key element of the
KKLT moduli stabilization.Comment: 32 pages; references are adde
Stabilization mechanism of edge states in graphene
It has been known that edge states of a graphite ribbon are zero-energy,
localized eigen-states. We show that next nearest-neighbor hopping process
decreases the energy of the edge states at zigzag edge with respect to the
Fermi energy. The energy reduction of the edge states is calculated
analytically by first-order perturbation theory and numerically. The resultant
model is consistent with the peak of recent scanning tunneling spectroscopy
measurements.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, final version to appear in Applied Physics

Dihedral-Angle-Controlled Crossover from Static Hole Delocalization to Dynamic Hopping in Biaryl Cation Radicals
In cases of coherent charge-transfer mechanism in biaryl compounds the rates follow a squared cosine trend with varying dihedral angle. Herein we demonstrate using a series of biaryl cation radicals with varying dihedral angles that the hole stabilization shows two different regimes where the mechanism of the hole stabilization switches over from (static) delocalization over both aryl rings to (dynamic) hopping. The experimental data and DFT calculations of biaryls with different dihedral angles unequivocally support that a crossover from delocalization to hopping occurs at a unique dihedral angle where the electronic coupling (Hab) is one half of reorganization (λ), that is, Hab=λ/2. The implication of this finding in non-coherent charge-transfer rates is being investigated
Radius Stabilization in a Supersymmetric Warped Compactification
A supersymmetric (SUSY) model of radius stabilization is constructed for the
S^1/Z_2 warped compactifications with a hypermultiplet in five dimensions.
Requiring the continuity of scalar field across the boundaries, we obtain
radius stabilization preserving SUSY, realizing the SUSY extension of the
Goldberger-Wise mechanism. Even if we allow discontinuities of the Z_2 odd
field across the boundary, we always obtain SUSY preservation but obtain the
radius stabilization only when the discontinuity is fixed by other mechanism.Comment: 6 pages, revtex, Errors of the products of distributions are

Spontaneous Formation of Stable Capillary Bridges for Firming Compact Colloidal Microstructures in Phase Separating Liquids: A Computational Study
Computer modeling and simulations are performed to investigate capillary
bridges spontaneously formed between closely packed colloidal particles in
phase separating liquids. The simulations reveal a self-stabilization mechanism
that operates through diffusive equilibrium of two-phase liquid morphologies.
Such mechanism renders desired microstructural stability and uniformity to the
capillary bridges that are spontaneously formed during liquid solution phase
separation. This self-stabilization behavior is in contrast to conventional
coarsening processes during phase separation. The volume fraction limit of the
separated liquid phases as well as the adhesion strength and thermodynamic
stability of the capillary bridges are discussed. Capillary bridge formations
in various compact colloid assemblies are considered. The study sheds light on
a promising route to in-situ (in-liquid) firming of fragile colloidal crystals
and other compact colloidal microstructures via capillary bridges
RS1 Cosmology as Brane Dynamics in an AdS/Schwarzschild Bulk
We explore various facets of the cosmology of the Randall-Sundrum scenario
with two branes by considering the dynamics of the branes moving in a bulk
AdS/Schwarzschild geometry. This approach allows us both to understand in more
detail and from a different perspective the role of the stabilization of the
hierarchy in the brane cosmology, as well as to extend to the situation where
the metric contains a horizon. In particular, we explicitly determine how the
Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism perturbs the background bulk geometry
to produce a realistic cosmology.Comment: 9 pages, uses ReVTeX, no figure
F-term Moduli Stabilization and Uplifting
We study K\"ahler moduli stabilization in IIB superstring theory. We propose
a new moduli stabilization mechanism by the supersymmetry-braking chiral
superfield which is coupled to K\"ahler moduli in K\"ahler potential. We also
study uplifting of the Large Volume Scenario (LVS) by it. In both cases, the
form of superpotential is crucial for moduli stabilization. We confirm that our
uplifting mechanism does not destabilize the vacuum of the LVS drastically.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figure
