    Characterization of Neuroimage Coupling Between EEG and FMRI Using Within-Subject Joint Independent Component Analysis

    The purpose of this dissertation was to apply joint independent component analysis (jICA) to electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to characterize the neuroimage coupling between the two modalities. EEG and fMRI are complimentary imaging techniques which have been used in conjunction to investigate neural activity. Understanding how these two imaging modalities relate to each other not only enables better multimodal analysis, but also has clinical implications as well. In particular, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, hypertension, and ischemic stroke are all known to impact the cerebral blood flow, and by extension alter the relationship between EEG and fMRI. By characterizing the relationship between EEG and fMRI within healthy subjects, it allows for comparison with a diseased population, and may offer ways to detect some of these conditions earlier. The correspondence between fMRI and EEG was first examined, and a methodological approach which was capable of informing to what degree the fMRI and EEG sources corresponded to each other was developed. Once it was certain that the EEG activity observed corresponded to the fMRI activity collected a methodological approach was developed to characterize the coupling between fMRI and EEG. Finally, this dissertation addresses the question of whether the use of jICA to perform this analysis increases the sensitivity to subcortical sources to determine to what degree subcortical sources should be taken into consideration for future studies. This dissertation was the first to propose a way to characterize the relationship between fMRI and EEG signals using blind source separation. Additionally, it was the first to show that jICA significantly improves the detection of subcortical activity, particularly in the case when both physiological noise and a cortical source are present. This new knowledge can be used to design studies to investigate subcortical signals, as well as to begin characterizing the relationship between fMRI and EEG across various task conditions

    Change blindness: eradication of gestalt strategies

    Arrays of eight, texture-defined rectangles were used as stimuli in a one-shot change blindness (CB) task where there was a 50% chance that one rectangle would change orientation between two successive presentations separated by an interval. CB was eliminated by cueing the target rectangle in the first stimulus, reduced by cueing in the interval and unaffected by cueing in the second presentation. This supports the idea that a representation was formed that persisted through the interval before being 'overwritten' by the second presentation (Landman et al, 2003 Vision Research 43149–164]. Another possibility is that participants used some kind of grouping or Gestalt strategy. To test this we changed the spatial position of the rectangles in the second presentation by shifting them along imaginary spokes (by ±1 degree) emanating from the central fixation point. There was no significant difference seen in performance between this and the standard task [F(1,4)=2.565, p=0.185]. This may suggest two things: (i) Gestalt grouping is not used as a strategy in these tasks, and (ii) it gives further weight to the argument that objects may be stored and retrieved from a pre-attentional store during this task

Aunque se trata de un proceso relativamente complejo, los bebés muestran una gran habilidad para el aprendizaje del lenguaje. Un entorno de aprendizaje lingüístico bilingüe podría considerarse aun más complejo, ya que los bebés están expuestos a las características lingüísticas de dos lenguas simultáneamente. En primer lugar, los bebés que crecen en un entorno bilingüe tienen que ser capaces de darse cuenta de que están expuestos a dos lenguas diferentes, y posteriormente deben separar y aprender las características especificas de cada una de ellas; por ejemplo, los distintos fonemas, palabras o estructuras gramaticales. Aunque la exposición lingüística total de los bebés bilingües debería ser comparable a la de los bebés monolingües, es probable que la exposición a cada una de las lenguas de su entorno sea menor, ya que tienen que dividir su tiempo de exposición entre ambas. Si bien los bebés bilingües parecen no tener problemas para enfrentarse a un contexto de aprendizaje potencialmente más complejo, ya que alcanzan las distintas etapas de adquisición del lenguaje a un ritmo similar a los bebés monolingües, sí se han observado adaptaciones a nivel conductual y a nivel de funcionamiento cerebral que podrían producirse como consecuencia de este contexto.Basque Center on cognition, brain and languag

    Optimizing Common Spatial Pattern for a Motor Imagerybased BCI by Eigenvector Filteration

    One of the fundamental criterion for the successful application of a brain-computer interface (BCI) system is to extract significant features that confine invariant characteristics specific to each brain state. Distinct features play an important role in enabling a computer to associate different electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to different brain states. To ease the workload on the feature extractor and enhance separability between different brain states, the data is often transformed or filtered to maximize separability before feature extraction. The common spatial patterns (CSP) approach can achieve this by linearly projecting the multichannel EEG data into a surrogate data space by the weighted summation of the appropriate channels. However, choosing the optimal spatial filters is very significant in the projection of the data and this has a direct impact on classification. This paper presents an optimized pattern selection method from the CSP filter for improved classification accuracy. Based on the hypothesis that values closer to zero in the CSP filter introduce noise rather than useful information, the CSP filter is modified by analyzing the CSP filter and removing/filtering the degradative or insignificant values from the filter. This hypothesis is tested by comparing the BCI results of eight subjects using the conventional CSP filters and the optimized CSP filter. In majority of the cases the latter produces better performance in terms of the overall classification accuracy
