An equalization technique for high rate OFDM systems

In a typical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) broadband wireless communication system, a guard interval using cyclic prefix is inserted to avoid the inter-symbol interference and the inter-carrier interference. This guard interval is required to be at least equal to, or longer than the maximum channel delay spread. This method is very simple, but it reduces the transmission efficiency. This efficiency is very low in the communication systems, which inhibit a long channel delay spread with a small number of sub-carriers such as the IEEE 802.11a wireless LAN (WLAN). To increase the transmission efficiency, it is usual that a time domain equalizer (TEQ) is included in an OFDM system to shorten the effective channel impulse response within the guard interval. There are many TEQ algorithms developed for the low rate OFDM applications such as asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL). The drawback of these algorithms is a high computational load. Most of the popular TEQ algorithms are not suitable for the IEEE 802.11a system, a high data rate wireless LAN based on the OFDM technique. In this thesis, a TEQ algorithm based on the minimum mean square error criterion is investigated for the high rate IEEE 802.11a system. This algorithm has a comparatively reduced computational complexity for practical use in the high data rate OFDM systems. In forming the model to design the TEQ, a reduced convolution matrix is exploited to lower the computational complexity. Mathematical analysis and simulation results are provided to show the validity and the advantages of the algorithm. In particular, it is shown that a high performance gain at a data rate of 54Mbps can be obtained with a moderate order of TEQ finite impulse response (FIR) filter. The algorithm is implemented in a field programmable gate array (FPGA). The characteristics and regularities between the elements in matrices are further exploited to reduce the hardware complexity in the matrix multiplication implementation. The optimum TEQ coefficients can be found in less than 4µs for the 7th order of the TEQ FIR filter. This time is the interval of an OFDM symbol in the IEEE 802.11a system. To compensate for the effective channel impulse response, a function block of 64-point radix-4 pipeline fast Fourier transform is implemented in FPGA to perform zero forcing equalization in frequency domain. The offsets between the hardware implementations and the mathematical calculations are provided and analyzed. The system performance loss introduced by the hardware implementation is also tested. Hardware implementation output and simulation results verify that the chips function properly and satisfy the requirements of the system running at a data rate of 54 Mbps

FFT and FIR Filter implementations for the DSL MODEMS

Broad band digital communication that operates over a standard copper wires. It requires the DSL modems which splits the transmissions into 2 frequency bands. The lower frequencies for voice and the higher frequencies for digital data (internet) in order to transmit the data to larger distances through a copper cable we need modulation techniques. Generally in this DSL modems modulation used is QAM technique. The output of the QAM is complex data this complex data we cannot transfer directly through a copper cable because the data should be in time domain or otherwise the phase of the data which is in frequency domain can be lost, in copper cable so this data should be converted in time domain by using IDFT technique. As IDFT requires more number of complex multiplications and more number of complex additions in comparison to IFFT so to reduce the additions and multiplications IFFT technique is used. At the receiver side we can retrieve the same data by using FFT technique. In this section the implemented FFT architecture is fully efficient and this architecture will require less area. And before we have to transmit through the copper line we have to do interpolation or decimation by using the Filtering operation. The implemented poly phase architecture for the filtering is fully efficient, symmetrical and it requires less number of multipliers

An orthogonal transmultiplexer which unifies multirate filter bank theory and communications theory is investigated in this dissertation. Various extensions of the orthogonal transmultiplexer techniques have been made for digital subscriber line communication applications. It is shown that the theoretical performance bounds of single carrier modulation based transceivers and multicarrier modulation based transceivers are the same under the same operational conditions. Single carrier based transceiver systems such as Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) and Carrierless Amplitude and Phase (CAP) modulation scheme, multicarrier based transceiver systems such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) or Discrete Multi Tone (DMT) and Discrete Subband (Wavelet) Multicarrier based transceiver (DSBMT) techniques are considered in this investigation. The performance of DMT and DSBMT based transceiver systems for a narrow band interference and their robustness are also investigated. It is shown that the performance of a DMT based transceiver system is quite sensitive to the location and strength of a single tone (narrow band) interference. The performance sensitivity is highlighted in this work. It is shown that an adaptive interference exciser can alleviate the sensitivity problem of a DMT based system. The improved spectral properties of DSBMT technique reduces the performance sensitivity for variations of a narrow band interference. It is shown that DSBMT technique outperforms DMT and has a more robust performance than the latter. The superior performance robustness is shown in this work. Optimal orthogonal basis design using cosine modulated multirate filter bank is discussed. An adaptive linear combiner at the output of analysis filter bank is implemented to eliminate the intersymbol and interchannel interferences. It is shown that DSBMT is the most suitable technique for a narrow band interference environment. A blind channel identification and optimal MMSE based equalizer employing a nonmaximally decimated filter bank precoder / postequalizer structure is proposed. The performance of blind channel identification scheme is shown not to be sensitive to the characteristics of unknown channel. The performance of the proposed optimal MMSE based equalizer is shown to be superior to the zero-forcing equalizer

Bit-Error-Rate-Minimizing Channel Shortening Using Post-FEQ Diversity Combining and a Genetic Algorithm

In advanced wireline or wireless communication systems, i.e., DSL, IEEE 802.11a/g, HIPERLAN/2, etc., a cyclic prefix which is proportional to the channel impulse response is needed to append a multicarrier modulation (MCM) frame for operating the MCM accurately. This prefix is used to combat inter symbol interference (ISI). In some cases, the channel impulse response can be longer than the cyclic prefix (CP). One of the most useful techniques to mitigate this problem is reuse of a Channel Shortening Equalizer (CSE) as a linear preprocessor before the MCM receiver in order to shorten the effective channel length. Channel shortening filter design is a widely examined topic in the literature. Most channel shortening equalizer proposals depend on perfect channel state information (CSI). However, this information may not be available in all situations. In cases where channel state information is not needed, blind adaptive equalization techniques are appropriate. In wireline communication systems (such as DMT), the CSE design is based on maximizing the bit rate, but in wireless systems (OFDM), there is a fixed bit loading algorithm, and the performance metric is Bit Error Rate (BER) minimization. In this work, a CSE is developed for multicarrier and single-carrier cyclic prefixed (SCCP) systems which attempts to minimize the BER. To minimize the BER, a Genetic Algorithm (GA), which is an optimization method based on the principles of natural selection and genetics, is used. If the CSI is shorter than the CP, the equalization can be done by a frequency domain equalizer (FEQ), which is a bank of complex scalars. However, in the literature the adaptive FEQ design has not been well examined. The second phase of this thesis focuses on different types of algorithms for adapting the FEQ and modifying the FEQ architecture to obtain a lower BER. Simulation results show that this modified architecture yields a 20 dB improvement in BER

Semi Blind Time Domain Equalization for MIMO-OFDM Systems

    Get PDF
In this thesis, a semi-blind time-domain equalization technique is proposed for general MIMO OFDM systems. The received OFDM symbols are shifted by more than or equal to the cyclic prefix (CP) length, and a blind equalizer is designed to completely suppress both inter-carrier interference (ICI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI) using second-order statistics of the shifted received OFDM symbols. Only a one-tap equalizer is needed to detect the time domain signals from the blind equalizer output, and one pilot OFDM symbol is utilized to estimate the required channel state information for the design of the one-tap equalizer. Simulation results show that this technique is robust against the number of shifts in excess of the CP length

On the eigenfilter design method and its applications: a tutorial

The eigenfilter method for digital filter design involves the computation of filter coefficients as the eigenvector of an appropriate Hermitian matrix. Because of its low complexity as compared to other methods as well as its ability to incorporate various time and frequency-domain constraints easily, the eigenfilter method has been found to be very useful. In this paper, we present a review of the eigenfilter design method for a wide variety of filters, including linear-phase finite impulse response (FIR) filters, nonlinear-phase FIR filters, all-pass infinite impulse response (IIR) filters, arbitrary response IIR filters, and multidimensional filters. Also, we focus on applications of the eigenfilter method in multistage filter design, spectral/spacial beamforming, and in the design of channel-shortening equalizers for communications applications
