    Growth of solid solution single crystals

    Based on the thermophysical properties of Hg sub 1-x Cd sub x Te alloys, the reasons are discussed for the failure of conventional Bridgman-Stockbarger growth methods to produce high quality homogeneous crystals in the presence of Earth's gravity. The deleterious effects are considered which arise from the dependence of the thermophysical properties on temperature and composition and from the large amount of heat carried by the fused silica ampules. An improved growth method, developed to optimize heat flow conditions, is described and experimental results are presented. The problems associated with growth in a gravitational environment are discussed. The anticipated advantages of growth in microgravity are given and the implications of the requirements for spaceflight experiments are summarized

    KNH2 - KH: a metal amide - hydride solid solution

    We report for the first time the formation of a metal amide-hydride solid solution. The dissolution of KH into KNH2 leads to an anionic substitution, which decreases the interaction among NH2 - ions.     High temperature resistant cermet and ceramic compositions

    Cermet compositions having high temperature oxidation resistance, high hardness and high abrasion and wear resistance, and particularly adapted for production of high temperature resistant cermet insulator bodies are presented. The compositions are comprised of a sintered body of particles of a high temperature resistant metal or metal alloy, preferably molybdenum or tungsten particles, dispersed in and bonded to a solid solution formed of aluminum oxide and silicon nitride, and particularly a ternary solid solution formed of a mixture of aluminum oxide, silicon nitride and aluminum nitride.     Grain growth in ultrafine-grained Y-TZP ceramics

    Grain growth in dense ultrafine-grained (120–600 nm) tetragonal ZrO2-Y2O3 ceramics is studied as a function of temperature. At all temperatures investigated both segregation and phase partitioning occur. It is argued that at temperatures ≤ 1150 °C grain growth is not significantly inhibited by solid solution drag or by phase partitioning. At higher temperatures the grain growth behaviour can be explained by the models of solid solution drag and/or phase partitioning depending on conditions.\u

    Ferroelectricity in the xAg2Nb4O11–(1−x)Na2Nb4O11 solid solution

    Compositions in the (AgxNa1-x)2Nb4O11 solid solution have been prepared by a conventional solid state method. Composites containing Ag2Nb4O11 have been shown to be ferroelectric and the Curie temperature shown to decrease from 149 °C at x = 1 to 62 °C at x = 0.7. Roomtemperature compositions with x ≤ 0.7 are monoclinic, while those with x ≥ 0.8 are rhombohedral with structures consistent with the relevant end-members. At x = 0.75, the structure was mainly rhombohedral but with coexistence of the monoclinic structure, indicating the proximity of a phase boundary

    Structure and magnetic interactions in the solid solution Ba3-xSrxCr2O8

    Solid solutions of the magnetic insulators Ba3Cr2O8 and Sr3Cr2O8 (Ba3-xSrxCr2O8) have been prepared in polycrystalline form for the first time. Single crys- talline material was obtained using a mirror image floating zone technique. X-ray diffraction data taken at room temperature indicate that the space group of Ba3-xSrxCr2O8 remains unchanged for all values of x, while the cell parameters depend on the chemical composition, as expected. Magnetization data, measured from 300 K down to 2 K, suggests that the interaction constant Jd within the Cr5+ dimers varies in a peculiar way as a function of x, starting at Jd = 25K for x = 0, then first slightly dropping to Jd = 18K for x = 0.75, before reaching Jd = 62K for x = 3
