The Double-edged Sword: A Mixed Methods Study of the Interplay between Bipolar Disorder and Technology Use
Human behavior is increasingly reflected or acted out through technology. This is of particular salience when it comes to changes in behavior associated with serious mental illnesses including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Early detection is crucial for these conditions but presently very challenging to achieve. Potentially, characteristics of these conditions\u27 traits and symptoms, at both idiosyncratic and collective levels, may be detectable through technology use patterns. In bipolar disorder specifically, initial evidence associates changes in mood with changes in technology-mediated communication patterns. However much less is known about how people with bipolar disorder use technology more generally in their lives, how they view their technology use in relation to their illness, and, perhaps most crucially, the causal relationship (if any exists) between their technology use and their disease. To address these uncertainties, we conducted a survey of people with bipolar disorder (N = 84). Our results indicate that technology use varies markedly with changes in mood and that technology use broadly may have potential as an early warning signal of mood episodes. We also find that technology for many of these participants is a double-edged sword: acting as both a culprit that can trigger or exacerbate symptoms as well as a support mechanism for recovery. These findings have implications for the design of both early warning systems and technology-mediated interventions

knowledge of how to go about protecting privacy. It seems
that Smartphone owners proceed with installation, ignoring any
misgivings they might have, and thereby irretrievably sacrifice
their privacy

Background: Concerns have been raised regarding the potential negative impacts of parents’ smartphone use on the parent–child relationship. A scoping literature review indicated inconsistent effects, arguably attributable to different conceptualizations of parent phone use and conflation of phone use with technological interference. Methods: Based on a sample of n = 3, 659 parents collected in partnership with a national public broadcaster, we conducted a multiverse analysis. We explored 84 different analytic choices to address whether associations were weak versus robust, and provide clearer direction for measurement, theory, and practice. Effects were assessed in relation to p values, effect sizes, and AIC; we further conducted a meta-analytic sensitivity check. Results: Direct associations between smartphone use and parenting were relatively weak and mixed. Instead, the relation between use and parenting depended on level of technological interference. This pattern was particularly robust for family displacement. At low levels of displacing time with family using technology, more smartphone use was associated with better (not worse) parenting. Conclusions: Our results indicate fragility in findings of risks for parental smartphone use on parenting; there were few concerns in this regard. Rather, at low levels of technological interference, more phone use was associated with higher parenting quality. Scholars should avoid generalized narratives of family risk and seek to uncover real effects of smartphone use on family outcomes across diverse households and contexts

Android Permissions Remystified: A Field Study on Contextual Integrity
Due to the amount of data that smartphone applications can potentially
access, platforms enforce permission systems that allow users to regulate how
applications access protected resources. If users are asked to make security
decisions too frequently and in benign situations, they may become habituated
and approve all future requests without regard for the consequences. If they
are asked to make too few security decisions, they may become concerned that
the platform is revealing too much sensitive information. To explore this
tradeoff, we instrumented the Android platform to collect data regarding how
often and under what circumstances smartphone applications are accessing
protected resources regulated by permissions. We performed a 36-person field
study to explore the notion of "contextual integrity," that is, how often are
applications accessing protected resources when users are not expecting it?
Based on our collection of 27 million data points and exit interviews with
participants, we examine the situations in which users would like the ability
to deny applications access to protected resources. We found out that at least
80% of our participants would have preferred to prevent at least one permission
request, and overall, they thought that over a third of requests were invasive
and desired a mechanism to block them
Typical Phone Use Habits: Intense Use Does Not Predict Negative Well-Being
Not all smartphone owners use their device in the same way. In this work, we
uncover broad, latent patterns of mobile phone use behavior. We conducted a
study where, via a dedicated logging app, we collected daily mobile phone
activity data from a sample of 340 participants for a period of four weeks.
Through an unsupervised learning approach and a methodologically rigorous
analysis, we reveal five generic phone use profiles which describe at least 10%
of the participants each: limited use, business use, power use, and
personality- & externally induced problematic use. We provide evidence that
intense mobile phone use alone does not predict negative well-being. Instead,
our approach automatically revealed two groups with tendencies for lower

Development of a Real-Time, Simple and High-Accuracy Fall Detection System for Elderly Using 3-DOF Accelerometers
© 2018, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals. Falls represent a major problem for the elderly people aged 60 or above. There are many monitoring systems which are currently available to detect the fall. However, there is a great need to propose a system which is of optimal effectiveness. In this paper, we propose to develop a low-cost fall detection system to precisely detect an event when an elderly person accidentally falls. The fall detection algorithm compares the acceleration with lower fall threshold and upper fall threshold values to accurately detect a fall event. The post-fall recognition module is the combination of posture recognition and vertical velocity estimation that has been added to our proposed method to enhance the performance and accuracy. In case of a fall, our device will transmit the location information to the contacts instantly via SMS and voice call. A smartphone application will ensure that the notifications are delivered to the elderly person’s relatives so that medical attention can be provided with minimal delay. The system was tested by volunteers and achieved 100% sensitivity and accuracy. This was confirmed by testing with public datasets and it also achieved the same percentage in sensitivity and accuracy as in our recorded datasets
