Single machine scheduling with time-dependent linear deterioration and rate-modifying maintenance
We study single machine scheduling problems with linear time-dependent deterioration effects and maintenance activities. Maintenance periods (MPs) are included into the schedule, so that the machine, that gets worse during the processing, can be restored to a better state. We deal with a job-independent version of the deterioration effects, that is, all jobs share a common deterioration rate. However, we introduce a novel extension to such models and allow the deterioration rates to change after every MP. We study several versions of this generalized problem and design a range of polynomial-time solution algorithms that enable the decision-maker to determine possible sequences of jobs and MPs in the schedule, so that the makespan objective can be minimized. We show that all problems reduce to a linear assignment problem with a product matrix and can be solved by methods very similar to those used for solving problems with positional effects
Combining time and position dependent effects on a single machine subject to rate-modifying activities
We introduce a general model for single machine scheduling problems, in which the actual processing times of jobs are subject to a combination of positional and time-dependent effects, that are job-independent but additionally depend on certain activities that modify the processing rate of the machine, such as, maintenance. We focus on minimizing two classical objectives: the makespan and the sum of the completion times. The traditional classification accepted in this area of scheduling is based on the distinction between the learning and deterioration effects on one hand, and between the positional effects and the start-time dependent effects on the other hand. Our results show that in the framework of the introduced model such a classification is not necessary, as long as the effects are job-independent. The model introduced in this paper covers most of the previously known models. The solution algorithms are developed within the same general framework and their running times are no worse than those available earlier for problems with less general effects
Working Notes from the 1992 AAAI Spring Symposium on Practical Approaches to Scheduling and Planning
The symposium presented issues involved in the development of scheduling systems that can deal with resource and time limitations. To qualify, a system must be implemented and tested to some degree on non-trivial problems (ideally, on real-world problems). However, a system need not be fully deployed to qualify. Systems that schedule actions in terms of metric time constraints typically represent and reason about an external numeric clock or calendar and can be contrasted with those systems that represent time purely symbolically. The following topics are discussed: integrating planning and scheduling; integrating symbolic goals and numerical utilities; managing uncertainty; incremental rescheduling; managing limited computation time; anytime scheduling and planning algorithms, systems; dependency analysis and schedule reuse; management of schedule and plan execution; and incorporation of discrete event techniques
Heuristics for an Integrated Maintenance and Production Scheduling Problem on Parallel Machines with Stochastic Failures and Non-Resumable Jobs
Maintenance activities can have a large impact on the performance of a production process and promised delivery dates. Therefore, maintenance and production planning should be handled as an integrated problem. In this paper, the problem of scheduling n jobs on m identical parallel machines is solved such that the expected makespan is minimised. The machines are affected by stochastic machine failures which are assumed to result in long production stops. To avoid this, preventive maintenance activities are planned beforehand. If a failure cannot be averted, a corrective maintenance has to be performed. Furthermore, it is assumed that jobs, interrupted by machine failure, have to be repeated (non-resumable case). In this paper, three construction heuristics and an Ant Colony System (ACS) algorithm are developed for solving this integrated problem. The excellent performance of the ACS as well as the benefit solving the problem in an integrated manner instead of sequentially, is shown in a numerical study
NASA space station automation: AI-based technology review
Research and Development projects in automation for the Space Station are discussed. Artificial Intelligence (AI) based automation technologies are planned to enhance crew safety through reduced need for EVA, increase crew productivity through the reduction of routine operations, increase space station autonomy, and augment space station capability through the use of teleoperation and robotics. AI technology will also be developed for the servicing of satellites at the Space Station, system monitoring and diagnosis, space manufacturing, and the assembly of large space structures
A process oriented approach to service concepts.
Cet article s’intéresse à l’amélioration de la qualité des services et à leur conception en discutant des concepts classiquement mobilisés dans l’analyse des services, au travers d’une approche orientée processus. Il commence par passer en revue les définitions proposées par quelques chercheurs bien connus, spécialistes des services. Il propose une nouvelle typologie des service basée sur une approche orientée processus, permettant de discuter la portée de certaines caractéristiques généralement associées aux services. Il pointe ensuite les similitudes existant entre la production de biens et celle de services et traite du continuum biens-services. Il s’intéresse enfin au clivage des opérations réalisées en front office et en back office, l’explicitation de la ligne de partage permettant de discuter de la qualité de service du double point de vue du consommateur et du producteur, dans une perspective de conception d’un service.The authors aim to contribute to the research on improvement of service quality and on service design by discussing service concepts through a process oriented approach. They begin by reviewing the service definitions given by some well known researchers working on service. They propose a new process oriented service classification which helps to challenge the validity of some service characteristics. They point out similarities between manufacturing and service production and discuss good-service continuum. Joint scheduling of jobs and preventive maintenance operations in the flowshop sequencing problem: A resolution with sequential and integrated strategies.
International audienceUsually, scheduling of maintenance operations and production sequencing are dealt with separately in the literature and, therefore, also in the industry. Given that maintenance affects available production time and elapsed production time affects the probability of machine failure, this interdependency seems to be overlooked in the literature. This paper presents a comparative study on joint production and preventive maintenance scheduling strategies regarding flowshop problems. The sequential strategy which consists of two steps: first scheduling the production jobs then inserting maintenance operations, taking the production schedule as a strong constraint. The integrated one which consists of simultaneously scheduling both maintenance and production activities based on a common representation of these two activities. For each strategy, a constructive heuristic and two meta-heuristics are proposed: NEH heuristic, Genetic algorithm and Taboo search. The goal is to optimize an objective function which takes into account both production and maintenance criteria. The proposed heuristics have been applied to non-standard test problems which represent joint production and maintenance benchmark flowshop scheduling problems taken from Benbouzid et al. (2003). A comparison of the solutions yielded by the heuristics developed in this paper with the heuristic solutions given by Taillard (1993) is undertaken with respect to the minimization of performance loss after maintenance insertion. The comparison shows that the proposed integrated GAs are clearly superior to all the analyzed algorithms
Simultaneous production and maintenance planning for a single capacitated resource facing both a dynamic demand and intensive wear and tear
This paper presents a generic modeling framework to simultaneously decide about production quantities and maintenance operations for a capacitated resource facing a dynamic demand for di erent types of products. As the resource needs to be setup for each speci c type of product, a lot-sizing problem occurs. In addition it is assumed that production causes intensive wear and tear. For this reason frequent maintenance activities need to be coordinated with the production operations in order to e ciently use the capacitated resource. A single generic model is presented to capture alternative forms of maintenance and di erent modes of interaction between maintenance and setups. As the model is numerically intractable for standard branch & bound algorithms, we solve it heuristically via a decomposition using a Fix-and-Optimize approach. Numerical results show that the proposed solution method produces high-quality results quickly. We further study the impact of simultaneous vs. sequential decisions about production and maintenance in the case of intensive wear and tear
