Robot Navigation in Unseen Spaces using an Abstract Map
Human navigation in built environments depends on symbolic spatial
information which has unrealised potential to enhance robot navigation
capabilities. Information sources such as labels, signs, maps, planners, spoken
directions, and navigational gestures communicate a wealth of spatial
information to the navigators of built environments; a wealth of information
that robots typically ignore. We present a robot navigation system that uses
the same symbolic spatial information employed by humans to purposefully
navigate in unseen built environments with a level of performance comparable to
humans. The navigation system uses a novel data structure called the abstract
map to imagine malleable spatial models for unseen spaces from spatial symbols.
Sensorimotor perceptions from a robot are then employed to provide purposeful
navigation to symbolic goal locations in the unseen environment. We show how a
dynamic system can be used to create malleable spatial models for the abstract
map, and provide an open source implementation to encourage future work in the
area of symbolic navigation. Symbolic navigation performance of humans and a
robot is evaluated in a real-world built environment. The paper concludes with
a qualitative analysis of human navigation strategies, providing further
insights into how the symbolic navigation capabilities of robots in unseen

Language-EXtended Indoor SLAM (LEXIS): A Versatile System for Real-time Visual Scene Understanding
Versatile and adaptive semantic understanding would enable autonomous systems
to comprehend and interact with their surroundings. Existing fixed-class models
limit the adaptability of indoor mobile and assistive autonomous systems. In
this work, we introduce LEXIS, a real-time indoor Simultaneous Localization and
Mapping (SLAM) system that harnesses the open-vocabulary nature of Large
Language Models (LLMs) to create a unified approach to scene understanding and
place recognition. The approach first builds a topological SLAM graph of the
environment (using visual-inertial odometry) and embeds Contrastive
Language-Image Pretraining (CLIP) features in the graph nodes. We use this
representation for flexible room classification and segmentation, serving as a
basis for room-centric place recognition. This allows loop closure searches to
be directed towards semantically relevant places. Our proposed system is
evaluated using both public, simulated data and real-world data, covering
office and home environments. It successfully categorizes rooms with varying
layouts and dimensions and outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOTA). For place
recognition and trajectory estimation tasks we achieve equivalent performance
to the SOTA, all also utilizing the same pre-trained model. Lastly, we

LiDAR-Based Place Recognition For Autonomous Driving: A Survey
LiDAR-based place recognition (LPR) plays a pivotal role in autonomous
driving, which assists Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems in
reducing accumulated errors and achieving reliable localization. However,
existing reviews predominantly concentrate on visual place recognition (VPR)
methods. Despite the recent remarkable progress in LPR, to the best of our
knowledge, there is no dedicated systematic review in this area. This paper
bridges the gap by providing a comprehensive review of place recognition
methods employing LiDAR sensors, thus facilitating and encouraging further
research. We commence by delving into the problem formulation of place
recognition, exploring existing challenges, and describing relations to
previous surveys. Subsequently, we conduct an in-depth review of related
research, which offers detailed classifications, strengths and weaknesses, and
architectures. Finally, we summarize existing datasets, commonly used
evaluation metrics, and comprehensive evaluation results from various methods
on public datasets. This paper can serve as a valuable tutorial for newcomers
entering the field of place recognition and for researchers interested in

Towards a Cognitive Probabilistic Representation of Space for Mobile Robots
Robots are rapidly evolving from factory workhorses to robot-companions. The future of robots, as our companions, is highly dependent on their abilities to understand, interpret and represent the environment in an efficient and consistent fashion, in a way that is comprehensible to humans. This paper is oriented in this direction. It suggests a hierarchical probabilistic representation of space that is based on objects. A global topological representation of places with object graphs serving as local maps is suggested. Experiments on place classification and place recognition are also reported in order to demonstrate the applicability of such a representation in the context of understanding space and thereby performing spatial cognition. Towards generalization of semi-supervised place classification over generalized Voronoi graph
With the progress of human-robot interaction (HRI), the ability of a robot to perform high-level tasks in complex environments is fast becoming an essential requirement. To this end, it is desirable for a robot to understand the environment at both geometric and semantic levels. Therefore in recent years, research towards place classification has been gaining in popularity. After the era of heuristic and rule-based approaches, supervised learning algorithms have been extensively used for this purpose, showing satisfactory performance levels. However, most of those approaches have only been trained and tested in the same environments and thus impede a generalized solution. In this paper, we have proposed a semi-supervised place classification over a generalized Voronoi graph (SPCoGVG) which is a semi-supervised learning framework comprised of three techniques: support vector machine (SVM), conditional random field (CRF) and generalized Voronoi graph (GVG), in order to improve the generalizability. The inherent problem of training CRF with partially labeled data has been solved using a novel parameter estimation algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated through extensive analysis of data collected in international university environments. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Human robot interaction in a crowded environment
Human Robot Interaction (HRI) is the primary means of establishing natural and affective communication between humans and robots. HRI enables robots to act in a way similar to humans in order to assist in activities that are considered to be laborious, unsafe, or repetitive. Vision based human robot interaction is a major component of HRI, with which visual information is used to interpret how human interaction takes place. Common tasks of HRI include finding pre-trained static or dynamic gestures in an image, which involves localising different key parts of the human body such as the face and hands. This information is subsequently used to extract different gestures. After the initial detection process, the robot is required to comprehend the underlying meaning of these gestures [3].
Thus far, most gesture recognition systems can only detect gestures and identify a person in relatively static environments. This is not realistic for practical applications as difficulties may arise from people‟s movements and changing illumination conditions. Another issue to consider is that of identifying the commanding person in a crowded scene, which is important for interpreting the navigation commands. To this end, it is necessary to associate the gesture to the correct person and automatic reasoning is required to extract the most probable location of the person who has initiated the gesture. In this thesis, we have proposed a practical framework for addressing the above issues. It attempts to achieve a coarse level understanding about a given environment before engaging in active communication. This includes recognizing human robot interaction, where a person has the intention to communicate with the robot. In this regard, it is necessary to differentiate if people present are engaged with each other or their surrounding environment. The basic task is to detect and reason about the environmental context and different interactions so as to respond accordingly. For example, if individuals are engaged in conversation, the robot should realize it is best not to disturb or, if an individual is receptive to the robot‟s interaction, it may approach the person.
Finally, if the user is moving in the environment, it can analyse further to understand if any help can be offered in assisting this user. The method proposed in this thesis combines multiple visual cues in a Bayesian framework to identify people in a scene and determine potential intentions. For improving system performance, contextual feedback is used, which allows the Bayesian network to evolve and adjust itself according to the surrounding environment. The results achieved demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique in dealing with human-robot interaction in a relatively crowded environment [7]
