Remote Real-Time Collaboration Platform enabled by the Capture, Digitisation and Transfer of Human-Workpiece Interactions
In this highly globalised manufacturing ecosystem, product design and verification activities, production and inspection processes, and technical support services are spread across global supply chains and customer networks. Therefore, a platform for global teams to collaborate with each other in real-time to perform complex tasks is highly desirable. This work investigates the design and development of a remote real-time collaboration platform by using human motion capture technology powered by infrared light based depth imaging sensors borrowed from the gaming industry. The unique functionality of the proposed platform is the sharing of physical contexts during a collaboration session by not only exchanging human actions but also the effects of those actions on the task environment. This enables teams to remotely work on a common task problem at the same time and also get immediate feedback from each other which is vital for collaborative design, inspection and verifications tasks in the factories of the future
Data-Efficient Decentralized Visual SLAM
Decentralized visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is a
powerful tool for multi-robot applications in environments where absolute
positioning systems are not available. Being visual, it relies on cameras,
cheap, lightweight and versatile sensors, and being decentralized, it does not
rely on communication to a central ground station. In this work, we integrate
state-of-the-art decentralized SLAM components into a new, complete
decentralized visual SLAM system. To allow for data association and
co-optimization, existing decentralized visual SLAM systems regularly exchange
the full map data between all robots, incurring large data transfers at a
complexity that scales quadratically with the robot count. In contrast, our
method performs efficient data association in two stages: in the first stage a
compact full-image descriptor is deterministically sent to only one robot. In
the second stage, which is only executed if the first stage succeeded, the data
required for relative pose estimation is sent, again to only one robot. Thus,
data association scales linearly with the robot count and uses highly compact
place representations. For optimization, a state-of-the-art decentralized
pose-graph optimization method is used. It exchanges a minimum amount of data
which is linear with trajectory overlap. We characterize the resulting system
and identify bottlenecks in its components. The system is evaluated on publicly

Analysis domain model for shared virtual environments
The field of shared virtual environments, which also
encompasses online games and social 3D environments, has a
system landscape consisting of multiple solutions that share great functional overlap. However, there is little system interoperability between the different solutions. A shared virtual environment has an associated problem domain that is highly complex raising difficult challenges to the development process, starting with the architectural design of the underlying system. This paper has two main contributions. The first contribution is a broad domain analysis of shared virtual environments, which enables developers to have a better understanding of the whole rather than the part(s). Managing a Fleet of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR) using Cloud Robotics Platform
In this paper, we provide details of implementing a system for managing a
fleet of autonomous mobile robots (AMR) operating in a factory or a warehouse
premise. While the robots are themselves autonomous in its motion and obstacle
avoidance capability, the target destination for each robot is provided by a
global planner. The global planner and the ground vehicles (robots) constitute
a multi agent system (MAS) which communicate with each other over a wireless
network. Three different approaches are explored for implementation. The first
two approaches make use of the distributed computing based Networked Robotics
architecture and communication framework of Robot Operating System (ROS) itself
while the third approach uses Rapyuta Cloud Robotics framework for this
implementation. The comparative performance of these approaches are analyzed
through simulation as well as real world experiment with actual robots. These
analyses provide an in-depth understanding of the inner working of the Cloud
Robotics Platform in contrast to the usual ROS framework. The insight gained
through this exercise will be valuable for students as well as practicing
engineers interested in implementing similar systems else where. In the
process, we also identify few critical limitations of the current Rapyuta

QUALITY OF SERVICE ARCHITECTURES APPLICABILITY IN AN INTRANET NETWORK
The quality of service (QoS) concept, which appeared initially as a necessity to improve Internet users perception, deals actually with new valences along with information society maturation. At the organisation’s level, the Intranet network shall assure in a similar manner as the Internet all kinds of services, which are useful to the organisation’s users. Starting from the traditional QoS architectural models, network administrators shall plan and design a QoS architecture, which will map on the organisation’s requirements, having at disposal not only own network elements but also communication services provided by other operators. Towards Collaborative Simultaneous Localization and Mapping: a Survey of the Current Research Landscape
Motivated by the tremendous progress we witnessed in recent years, this paper
presents a survey of the scientific literature on the topic of Collaborative
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (C-SLAM), also known as multi-robot SLAM.
With fleets of self-driving cars on the horizon and the rise of multi-robot
systems in industrial applications, we believe that Collaborative SLAM will
soon become a cornerstone of future robotic applications. In this survey, we
introduce the basic concepts of C-SLAM and present a thorough literature
review. We also outline the major challenges and limitations of C-SLAM in terms
of robustness, communication, and resource management. We conclude by exploring
