Re-engineering a nanodosimetry Monte Carlo code into Geant4: software design and first results
A set of physics models for nanodosimetry simulation is being re-engineered
for use in Geant4-based simulations. This extension of Geant4 capabilities is
part of a larger scale R&D project for multi-scale simulation involving
adaptable, co-working condensed and discrete transport schemes. The project in
progress reengineers the physics modeling capabilities associated with an
existing FORTRAN track-structure code for nanodosimetry into a software design
suitable to collaborate with an object oriented simulation kernel. The first

The Altitude Wind Tunnel (AWT): A unique facility for propulsion system and adverse weather testing
A need has arisen for a new wind tunnel facility with unique capabilities for testing propulsion systems and for conducting research in adverse weather conditions. New propulsion system concepts, new aircraft configurations with an unprecedented degree of propulsion system/aircraft integration, and requirements for aircraft operation in adverse weather dictate the need for a new test facility. Required capabilities include simulation of both altitude pressure and temperature, large size, full subsonic speed range, propulsion system operation, and weather simulation (i.e., icing, heavy rain). A cost effective rehabilitation of the NASA Lewis Research Center's Altitude Wind Tunnel (AWT) will provide a facility with all these capabilities
Simulation synergy : expanding TRNSYS capabilities and usability
Developers of simulation packages are now able to take advantage of the increase in available desktop computing power to expand the capabilities and usability of their programs. This paper will illustrate these opportunities by discussing the different techniques the developers of the TRNSYS software package have used to try and create a synergy between TRNSYS and external programs and between the developers and users of the program
MADNESS: A Multiresolution, Adaptive Numerical Environment for Scientific Simulation
MADNESS (multiresolution adaptive numerical environment for scientific
simulation) is a high-level software environment for solving integral and
differential equations in many dimensions that uses adaptive and fast harmonic
analysis methods with guaranteed precision based on multiresolution analysis
and separated representations. Underpinning the numerical capabilities is a
powerful petascale parallel programming environment that aims to increase both
programmer productivity and code scalability. This paper describes the features
and capabilities of MADNESS and briefly discusses some current applications in
chemistry and several areas of physics
Can Comparative Risk Be Used to Develop Better Environmental Decisions?
This thesis investigates the design of atria for daylighting in large scale buildings. Athree dimensional test building with a central atrium was constructed and various parameters of the atrium altered. The impact of these changes was studied through computer simulations of annual daylight distribution by implementing state of theart software. Daylight autonomy is simulated for an annual climate file for Stockholm, Sweden. In the thesis, notion is made of basic daylighting concepts, the importance of bringing daylight into buildings is argued, and the daylighting criteria of three environmental certification tools introduced. Furthermore, a detailed comparison is made on several well known daylight simulation tools. A newly developed, state of the art, daylight simulation tool called Honeybee, is used in the simulation process. The tool utilizes the calculation engines of wellknown daylight simulation software Radiance and Daysim, which apply backward ray-tracing to reach accurate results. Honeybee is coupled to the graphical algorithmeditor Grasshopper for Rhinoceros 3D, which allows for an efficient way of parametric modelling. The comparison of five different daylight simulation tools showed that Honeybee outweighs the capabilities of many of them by offering a wast range of simulation capabilities and also giving the user exceptional control of result data within multiple zones of the test building. The results of the daylight study have been compiled into a document which purpose is to serve as early stage design guidelines of atria for architects. Many factors have been shown through simulation to have a dramatic impact on daylighton an annual basis, and several suggestions have been made on how to maximize the quantity of daylight within buildings containing atria

System overview of the NASA Dryden Integrated Test Facility
The Integrated Test Facility, built at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Facility, provides new real-time test capabilities for emerging research aircraft. An overview of the test facility and the real-time systems developed to operate this unique facility is presented. The facility will reduce flight test risk by minimizing the difference between the flight and ground test environments. This ground test environment is provided by combining real-time flight simulation with the actual aircraft. A brief introduction to the facility is followed by a discussion of the generic capabilities of its real-time systems. The simulation system with flight hardware and the remotely augmented vehicle system is described. An overview of many hardware systems developed for the facility follows. The benefits of applying simulation to hardware-in-the-loop testing on the X-31 Flight Research Program are presented
