An Open-Source Microscopic Traffic Simulator
We present the interactive Java-based open-source traffic simulator available
at www.traffic-simulation.de. In contrast to most closed-source commercial
simulators, the focus is on investigating fundamental issues of traffic
dynamics rather than simulating specific road networks. This includes testing
theories for the spatiotemporal evolution of traffic jams, comparing and
testing different microscopic traffic models, modeling the effects of driving
styles and traffic rules on the efficiency and stability of traffic flow, and
investigating novel ITS technologies such as adaptive cruise control,
inter-vehicle and vehicle-infrastructure communication
QuEST and High Performance Simulation of Quantum Computers
We introduce QuEST, the Quantum Exact Simulation Toolkit, and compare it to
ProjectQ, qHipster and a recent distributed implementation of Quantum++. QuEST
is the first open source, OpenMP and MPI hybridised, GPU accelerated simulator
of universal quantum circuits. Embodied as a C library, it is designed so that
a user's code can be deployed seamlessly to any platform from a laptop to a
supercomputer. QuEST is capable of simulating generic quantum circuits of
general single-qubit gates and multi-qubit controlled gates, on pure and mixed
states, represented as state-vectors and density matrices, and under the
presence of decoherence. Using the ARCUS Phase-B and ARCHER supercomputers, we
benchmark QuEST's simulation of random circuits of up to 38 qubits, distributed
over up to 2048 compute nodes, each with up to 24 cores. We directly compare
QuEST's performance to ProjectQ's on single machines, and discuss the
differences in distribution strategies of QuEST, qHipster and Quantum++. QuEST
shows excellent scaling, both strong and weak, on multicore and distributed

A software tool for simulating practical chemistry
A software package has been written to allow a user to build and manipulate a simple chemistry experiment. Using a toolbox of equipment the apparatus can be interactively designed and the necessary chemicals added from a database. Selection of the appropriate physical and reaction conditions allows the experiment to be run both in real and virtual time, snapshots of the experiment being stored for subsequent modification and replay. The structure of the reaction data file allows any reaction to be designed with yields and both forward and backward reaction rates. Thus, the user has the opportunity to experiment with the best apparatus layout, reactant composition and physical conditions in order to achieve an optimal result.
