simulating routing schemes on large-scale topologies
The expansion of the Internet routing system results in a number of research challenges, in particular, the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) starts to show its limits a.o. in terms of the number of routing table entries it can dynamically process and control. Dynamic routing protocols showing better scaling properties are thus under investigation. However, because deploying under-development routing protocols on the Internet is not practicable at a large-scale (due to the size of the Internet topology), simulation is an unavoidable step to validate the properties of a newly proposed routing scheme. Unfortunately, the simulation of inter-domain routing protocols over large networks (order of tens of thousands of nodes) poses real challenges due to the limited memory and computational power that computers impose. This paper presents the Dynamic Routing Model simulator \drmsim which addresses the specific problem of large-scale simulations of (inter-domain) routing models on large networks. The motivation for developing a new simulator lies in the limitation of existing simulation tools in terms of the number of nodes they can handle and in the models they propose
Multiple Random Walks to Uncover Short Paths in Power Law Networks
Consider the following routing problem in the context of a large scale
network , with particular interest paid to power law networks, although our
results do not assume a particular degree distribution. A small number of nodes
want to exchange messages and are looking for short paths on . These nodes
do not have access to the topology of but are allowed to crawl the network
within a limited budget. Only crawlers whose sample paths cross are allowed to
exchange topological information. In this work we study the use of random walks
(RWs) to crawl . We show that the ability of RWs to find short paths bears
no relation to the paths that they take. Instead, it relies on two properties
of RWs on power law networks: 1) RW's ability observe a sizable fraction of the
network edges; and 2) an almost certainty that two distinct RW sample paths
cross after a small percentage of the nodes have been visited. We show
promising simulation results on several real world networks
Scalable Routing Easy as PIE: a Practical Isometric Embedding Protocol (Technical Report)
We present PIE, a scalable routing scheme that achieves 100% packet delivery
and low path stretch. It is easy to implement in a distributed fashion and
works well when costs are associated to links. Scalability is achieved by using
virtual coordinates in a space of concise dimensionality, which enables greedy
routing based only on local knowledge. PIE is a general routing scheme, meaning
that it works on any graph. We focus however on the Internet, where routing
scalability is an urgent concern. We show analytically and by using simulation
that the scheme scales extremely well on Internet-like graphs. In addition, its
geometric nature allows it to react efficiently to topological changes or
failures by finding new paths in the network at no cost, yielding better
delivery ratios than standard algorithms. The proposed routing scheme needs an
amount of memory polylogarithmic in the size of the network and requires only
local communication between the nodes. Although each node constructs its
coordinates and routes packets locally, the path stretch remains extremely low,
even lower than for centralized or less scalable state-of-the-art algorithms:
PIE always finds short paths and often enough finds the shortest paths.Comment: This work has been previously published in IEEE ICNP'11. The present

Towards a Testbed for Dynamic Vehicle Routing Algorithms
Since modern transport services are becoming more flexible, demand-responsive, and energy/cost efficient, there is a growing demand for large-scale microscopic simulation platforms in order to test sophisticated routing algorithms. Such platforms have to simulate in detail, not only the dynamically changing demand and supply of the relevant service, but also traffic flow and other relevant transport services. This paper presents the DVRP extension to the open-source MATSim simulator. The extension is designed to be highly general and customizable to simulate a wide range of dynamic rich vehicle routing problems. The extension allows plugging in of various algorithms that are responsible for continuous re-optimisation of routes in response to changes in the system. The DVRP extension has been used in many research and commercial projects dealing with simulation of electric and autonomous taxis, demand-responsive transport, personal rapid transport, free-floating car sharing and parking search
Efficient Micro-Mobility using Intra-domain Multicast-based Mechanisms (M&M)
One of the most important metrics in the design of IP mobility protocols is
the handover performance. The current Mobile IP (MIP) standard has been shown
to exhibit poor handover performance. Most other work attempts to modify MIP to
slightly improve its efficiency, while others propose complex techniques to
replace MIP. Rather than taking these approaches, we instead propose a new
architecture for providing efficient and smooth handover, while being able to
co-exist and inter-operate with other technologies. Specifically, we propose an
intra-domain multicast-based mobility architecture, where a visiting mobile is
assigned a multicast address to use while moving within a domain. Efficient
handover is achieved using standard multicast join/prune mechanisms. Two
approaches are proposed and contrasted. The first introduces the concept
proxy-based mobility, while the other uses algorithmic mapping to obtain the
multicast address of visiting mobiles. We show that the algorithmic mapping
approach has several advantages over the proxy approach, and provide mechanisms
to support it. Network simulation (using NS-2) is used to evaluate our scheme
and compare it to other routing-based micro-mobility schemes - CIP and HAWAII.
The proactive handover results show that both M&M and CIP shows low handoff
delay and packet reordering depth as compared to HAWAII. The reason for M&M's
comparable performance with CIP is that both use bi-cast in proactive handover.
The M&M, however, handles multiple border routers in a domain, where CIP fails.
We also provide a handover algorithm leveraging the proactive path setup
capability of M&M, which is expected to outperform CIP in case of reactive
