An examination of Emmanuel Levinas’ writings on money reveals his distance from—and indebtedness to—a philosophical predecessor, Georg Simmel. Levinas and Simmel share a phenomenological approach to analyses of the proximity of the stranger, the importance of the face, and the interruption of the dyadic relationship by the third. Money is closely linked to the conception of totality because money is the medium that compares heterogeneous values. In Defence of Epistemic Relativism: The Concept of Truth in Georg Simmel’s Philosophy of Money

As one of the first modern philosophers, Georg Simmel systematically developed a “relativistic world view” (Simmel 2004, VI). In this paper I attempt to examine Simmel’s relativistic answer to the question of truth. I trace his main arguments regarding the concept of truth and present his justification of epistemic relativism. In doing so, I also want to show that some of Simmel’s claims are surprisingly timely. Simmel’s relativistic concept of truth is supported by an evolutionary argument. The first part of this paper outlines that pragmatic foundation of his epistemology. The second part of the paper shows that Simmel develops what today would be called a coherence theory of truth. He presents his coherentist view that every belief is true only in relation to another one primarily as a theory of epistemic justification. Georg Simmel and Pragmatism

This paper offers some brief reflections on pragmatist themes in Georg Simmel’s philosophy. §1 presents a number of assessments – by Simmel’s contemporaries, by later interpreters, and by Simmel himself – concerning his proximity to pragmatism. §2 offers a reconstruction of Simmel’s 1885-paper “The Relationship between the Theory of Selection and Epistemology,” focusing in particular on what the argument owed to von Helmholtz. It was this paper first and foremost that suggested to many that Simmel was close to pragmatism. §§3-5 follow the development of the core idea of the 1885-paper in Simmel’s subsequent writings. §§6-8 compare and contrasts Simmel’s views on evolution and truth with the positions of Peirce, James, and Dewey. §9 returns to the overall question whether Simmel was a pragmatist and offers an irenic answer

Economy as a religious problem: A political approach

This article tackles the problem of understanding money and economy with non-economic analytical categories. The first part is devoted to point out the differences between the exclusively economic approaches to money and the recent research, from anthropology to philosophy, that has laid stress on the political and religious aspects of the monetary phenomenon. The second part is focused on Georg Simmel´s fundamental contributions to a philosophical comprehension of money. Georg Simmel: Metropolis, and Sociology of the Senses

La metròpoli de Simmel és la forma més significativa de la Modernitat, alhora com a lloc específic d’una nova forma de socialització i com a espai d’emergència de noves formes de vida. Simmel ens presenta un estil de vida metropolità paradigmàtic, en el qual l’individu necessàriament ha de navegar en un món objectiu cada cop més societari i menys comunitari. És un món objectiu que tendeix a un individualisme calculador, sovint egoista i sense compassió, però també capaç de preservar la cultura subjectiva de la sensibilitat anímica. PARAULES CLAU: Simmel, metropoli, sentit.Simmel’s metropolis is the most significant form of Modernity, both as a specific place for a new kind of socialization, and as a setting with new forms of life emerging. Simmel shows us a paradigmatic metropolitan lifestyle, where individuals necessarily have to travel in an objective world, more and more societarian and less communitarian. It is an objective world that tends to a calculating, often selfish and merciless individualism, but also capable of preserving subjective culture from mental sensitivity. Interaksi Sosial dalam Novel "Tanjung Kemarau" Karya Royyan Julian (Kajian Teori Georg Simmel)

Latar belakang penelitian ini adalah sebagai berikut. Pertama, hakikat manusia sebagai makhluk sosial seharusnya dapat berinteraksi dengan baik. Kedua, novel Tanjung Kemarau karya Royyan Julian menceritakan bagaimana kehidupan masyarakat Madura dengan segala seluk beluknya, misalnya pertukaran, konflik, prostitusi dan sosiabilitas yang ada di masyarakat Madura tersebut. Kisah dalam novel ini didominasi oleh fenomena interaksi sosial. Karena itu, digunakan teori interkasi sosial milik Georg Simmel. Tujuan yang terdapat dalam penelitian ini adalah sebagai berikut. (1) Mendeskripsikan pertukaran dalam novel Tanjung Kemarau karya Royyan Julian. (2) Mendeskripsikan konflik dalam novel Tanjung Kemarau karya Royyan Julian. (3) Mendeskripsikan prostitusi dalam novel Tanjung Kemarau karya Royyan Julian. (4) Mendeskripsikan sosiabilitas dalam novel Tanjung Kemarau karya Royyan Julian. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori milik Georg Simmel yang beranggapan bahwa sosiologi sebagai ilmu pengetahuan harus memiliki tujuan mendeskripsikan, mengklasifikasikan, menganalisis, dan melakukan penyelidikan tentang bentuk hubungan sosial yang terjadi dalam masyarakat. Salah satu teori yang terkenal dari Georg Simmel adalah teori interaksi. Menurut Simmel, masyarakat dapat terbentuk karena keberadaan interaksi, bukan hanya berisi orang-orang yang diam, tidak ada interaksi sama sekali. Simmel juga tidak mementingkan berapa jumlah orang yang berinteraksi, yang terpenting hanya ada interaksi di dalamnya. Berdasarkan teori Simmel, terdapat empat konsep mengenai interaksi sosial yang digunakan untuk menganalisis sebuah karya sastra, hal tersebut meliputi 1) pertukaran, 2) konflik, 3) prostitusi, dan 4) sosiabilitas. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan objektif. Pendekatan objektif yang dimaksudkan di sini adalah pendekatan yang memusatkan perhatiannya ke dalam unsur-unsur pembangun dalam karya sastra atau yang lebih dikenal dengan istilah analisis intrinsik. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah novel Tanjung Kemarau karya Royyan Julian sedangkan data penelitiannya berupa unit-unit teks yang berhubungan dengan keempat rumusan masalah yang merupakan konsep interaksi sosial menurut Georg Simmel. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah baca catat, teknik baca catat digunakan untuk memperoleh data melalui membaca teks yang menjadi sumber data penelitian, kemudian mencatat data yang sesuai dengan keempat konsep interaksi sosial milik Georg Simmel. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalan teknik deskripstif analitis. Teknik deskriptif analitis ini dilakukan dengan cara mengidentifikasi data yang dilanjutkan dengan menganalisis data. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah temuan interaksi sosial dalam novel Tanjung Kemarau karya Royyan Julian berdasarkan teori interaksi sosial milik Gerog Simmel yang memiliki empat konsep: 1) ditemukan 13 bukti data pertukaran, 2) ditemukan 16 bukti data konflik, 3) ditemukan 7 bukti data prostitusi, dan 4) ditemukan 6 bukti data sosiabilitas

Tal com manifestàrem en el número anterior, volem que la secció d'Història Intel·lectual de Digithum serveixi per rescatar el llegat d’aquells autors que han estat el nostre suport i amb els quals hem ampliat la nostra perspectiva. En aquesta ocasió oferim una traducció al castellà del text de Georg Simmel “Tendencies in German life and thought since 1870.” La traducció al català la seguirà ben aviat.Aquest és l’únic text de Simmel del qual no tenim la versió original en alemany, que es va extraviar. Així, avui dia disposem únicament de la versió en l'anglès, a càrrec de  W. D. Briggs, professor de la Western Reserve University d’Ohio. Aquesta versió fou publicada l’any 1902 a la revista The international monthly. A magazine of contemporary thought. Simmel n’era membre del comitè assessor en l’area de sociologia.Considerem aquest text una peça valuosíssima atès que Simmel hi exhibeix la seva agudesa analítica i el seu marcat relacionisme, en ocupar-se de les diverses formes en les quals es manifestava la vida social alemanya a l’inici del segle XX i combinar-les amb la seva particular lectura d'autors com Kant, Schopenhauer o Nietzsche. D. Briggs of the Western Reserve University of Ohio was in charge. That essay was published in 1902 in The international monthly. A magazine of contemporary thought, where Georg Simmel was a member of the advisory board for the sociology section.We consider this an invaluable piece in which Simmel sets forth his analytical acuity and his characteristic relationism when dealing with the diverse forms in which German life in the early 20th century was manifested and when presenting his particular reading of Kant, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. In addition, a variety of issues which occupied him throughout his intellectual path such as the philosophy of culture, the feminine culture, religion, and historical materialism among others are present.
