Time in the ontology of Cornelius Castoriadis
We can locate the problematic of time within three philosophical questions, which respectively designate three central areas of philosophical reflection and contemplation. These are: 1) The ontological question, i.e. 'what is being?' 2) The epistemological question, i.e. 'what can we know with certainty?' 3) The existential question, i.e. 'what is the meaning of existence?' These three questions, which are philosophical, but also scientific and political, as they underline the political and moral question of truth and justice, arise from the phenomenon of time, the irreversible constant flow of phenomena that undermines every claim to absolute knowledge. The purpose of this essay is to illuminate the importance of time for philosophical thought and, more generally, for human social and psychical life, in the context of the ontology of Cornelius Castoriadis. Castoriadis, who asserted that " being is time – and not in the horizon of time " , correlated history to society and being to temporality within the social-historical stratum, the ontological plane created by human existence, where " existence is signification ". Time is interpreted as the creation and destruction of forms in a magmatic, layered with a non-regular stratification, reality, where the social-historical manifests as the creation of collective human activity, in the manner of social imaginary significations. This notion of temporality is accompanied by a profound criticism of traditional rationalistic philosophy, to which Castoriadis assigns the name 'ensemblistic/identitary', that highlights the necessity of a new, magmatic ontology, based on the primacy of time

On March 9th, 1985, Paul Ricoeur and Cornelius Castoriadis met at the studio of the France Culture “Le Bon Plaisir” radio broadcaster. In 2016, the transcript of their dialogue, their only public debate, was published. This publication is significant not only because it highlights the points of convergence and divergence between the two prominent thinkers, but also because the issues they discuss: the relation between society and history, tradition and creativity, imagination and collective action, are relevant to the philosophical and political discourse of our time
"The Speech of Dasein: Heidegger and Quotidian Discourse"
In § 35 of Sein und Zeit Heidegger’s denunciation of Gerede, idle talk, is confident and scathing. It sounds so sinister and threatening. What could Heidegger be talking about? One could cite numerous fictional characters (e.g., Pecksniff, Mrs. Gamp, Skimpole, Podsnap – all in Dickens), characters whose speech is very nearly an idiolect of bad faith. And yet there is something so fascinating and creative in their speech, an exuberance in their dissimulation, that one wouldn’t want to miss them.
Could idle talk in Heidegger’s sense contribute to the theoretization of Bakhtin's idea of the dialogic and heteroglossia and to the notion of discours as it has been developed by Benveniste, Barthes, and Genette? In prose fiction language is valorized (often implicitly) in terms of meaning/nonsense, serious/non-serious, full/empty. When in fiction language that is deemed low, formulaic, or “empty”-- gossip, chatter, prattle, idiotismes – comes to the fore the narrative elements falters, “nothing much” is said. Denotation and connotation in the human-computer interface: The ‘Save as...’ command
This paper presents a semiotic technique as a means
of exploring meaning and understanding in interface design
and use. This is examined through a study of the interaction
between the ‘file’ metaphor and ‘save as’ command metaphor.
The behaviour of these (from a functional or computational
basis) do not exactly match, or map onto, the meaning of the
metaphor. We examine both the denotation of a term to the
user, i.e. its literal meaning to that person, and the term’s
connotations, i.e. any other meanings associated with the term.
We suggest that the technique applied is useful in predicting
future problems with understanding the use of metaphor at the
interface and with designing appropriate signification for
human-computer interaction. Variation in connotation was
expected but a more fundamental difference in denotation was
also uncovered. Moreover, the results clearly demonstrate that
consistency in the denotation of a term is critical in achieving a
good user understanding of the command

The NUHM2 after LHC Run 1
We make a frequentist analysis of the parameter space of the NUHM2, in which
the soft supersymmetry (SUSY)-breaking contributions to the masses of the two
Higgs multiplets, , vary independently from the universal soft
SUSY-breaking contributions to the masses of squarks and sleptons. Our
analysis uses the MultiNest sampling algorithm with over points
to sample the NUHM2 parameter space. It includes the ATLAS and CMS Higgs mass
measurements as well as their searches for supersymmetric jets + MET signals
using the full LHC Run~1 data, the measurements of by
LHCb and CMS together with other B-physics observables, electroweak precision
observables and the XENON100 and LUX searches for spin-independent dark matter
scattering. We find that the preferred regions of the NUHM2 parameter space
have negative SUSY-breaking scalar masses squared for squarks and sleptons,
, as well as . The tension present in the
CMSSM and NUHM1 between the supersymmetric interpretation of and
the absence to date of SUSY at the LHC is not significantly alleviated in the
NUHM2. We find that the minimum with 21 degrees of freedom
(dof) in the NUHM2, to be compared with in the
CMSSM, and in the NUHM1. We find that the
one-dimensional likelihood functions for sparticle masses and other observables
are similar to those found previously in the CMSSM and NUHM1.Comment: 20 pages latex, 13 figure
Close binary evolution I. The tidally induced shear mixing in rotating binaries
We study how tides in a binary system induce some specific internal shear
mixing, able to substantially modify the evolution of close binaries prior to
mass transfer. We construct numerical models accounting for tidal interactions,
meridional circulation, transport of angular momentum, shears and horizontal
turbulence and consider a variety of orbital periods and initial rotation
velocities. Depending on orbital periods and rotation velocities, tidal effects
may spin down (spin down Case) or spin up (spin up Case) the axial rotation. In
both cases, tides may induce a large internal differential rotation. The
resulting tidally induced shear mixing (TISM) is so efficient that the internal
distributions of angular velocity and chemical elements are greatly influenced.
The evolutionary tracks are modified, and in both cases of spin down and spin
up, large amounts of nitrogen can be transported to the stellar surfaces before
any binary mass transfer. Meridional circulation, when properly treated as an
advection, always tends to counteract the tidal interaction, tending to spin up
the surface when it is braked down and vice versa. As a consequence, the times
needed for the axial angular velocity to become equal to the orbital angular
velocity may be larger than given by typical synchronization timescales. Also,
due to meridional circulation some differential rotation remains in tidally
