    Authentication enhancement in command and control networks: (a study in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks)

    Intelligent transportation systems contribute to improved traffic safety by facilitating real time communication between vehicles. By using wireless channels for communication, vehicular networks are susceptible to a wide range of attacks, such as impersonation, modification, and replay. In this context, securing data exchange between intercommunicating terminals, e.g., vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, constitutes a technological challenge that needs to be addressed. Hence, message authentication is crucial to safeguard vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) from malicious attacks. The current state-of-the-art for authentication in VANETs relies on conventional cryptographic primitives, introducing significant computation and communication overheads. In this challenging scenario, physical (PHY)-layer authentication has gained popularity, which involves leveraging the inherent characteristics of wireless channels and the hardware imperfections to discriminate between wireless devices. However, PHY-layerbased authentication cannot be an alternative to crypto-based methods as the initial legitimacy detection must be conducted using cryptographic methods to extract the communicating terminal secret features. Nevertheless, it can be a promising complementary solution for the reauthentication problem in VANETs, introducing what is known as “cross-layer authentication.” This thesis focuses on designing efficient cross-layer authentication schemes for VANETs, reducing the communication and computation overheads associated with transmitting and verifying a crypto-based signature for each transmission. The following provides an overview of the proposed methodologies employed in various contributions presented in this thesis. 1. The first cross-layer authentication scheme: A four-step process represents this approach: initial crypto-based authentication, shared key extraction, re-authentication via a PHY challenge-response algorithm, and adaptive adjustments based on channel conditions. Simulation results validate its efficacy, especially in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios while proving its resilience against active and passive attacks. 2. The second cross-layer authentication scheme: Leveraging the spatially and temporally correlated wireless channel features, this scheme extracts high entropy shared keys that can be used to create dynamic PHY-layer signatures for authentication. A 3-Dimensional (3D) scattering Doppler emulator is designed to investigate the scheme’s performance at different speeds of a moving vehicle and SNRs. Theoretical and hardware implementation analyses prove the scheme’s capability to support high detection probability for an acceptable false alarm value ≤ 0.1 at SNR ≥ 0 dB and speed ≤ 45 m/s. 3. The third proposal: Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) integration for improved authentication: Focusing on enhancing PHY-layer re-authentication, this proposal explores integrating RIS technology to improve SNR directed at designated vehicles. Theoretical analysis and practical implementation of the proposed scheme are conducted using a 1-bit RIS, consisting of 64 × 64 reflective units. Experimental results show a significant improvement in the Pd, increasing from 0.82 to 0.96 at SNR = − 6 dB for multicarrier communications. 4. The fourth proposal: RIS-enhanced vehicular communication security: Tailored for challenging SNR in non-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenarios, this proposal optimises key extraction and defends against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks through selective signal strengthening. Hardware implementation studies prove its effectiveness, showcasing improved key extraction performance and resilience against potential threats. 5. The fifth cross-layer authentication scheme: Integrating PKI-based initial legitimacy detection and blockchain-based reconciliation techniques, this scheme ensures secure data exchange. Rigorous security analyses and performance evaluations using network simulators and computation metrics showcase its effectiveness, ensuring its resistance against common attacks and time efficiency in message verification. 6. The final proposal: Group key distribution: Employing smart contract-based blockchain technology alongside PKI-based authentication, this proposal distributes group session keys securely. Its lightweight symmetric key cryptography-based method maintains privacy in VANETs, validated via Ethereum’s main network (MainNet) and comprehensive computation and communication evaluations. The analysis shows that the proposed methods yield a noteworthy reduction, approximately ranging from 70% to 99%, in both computation and communication overheads, as compared to the conventional approaches. This reduction pertains to the verification and transmission of 1000 messages in total

    Pilot based channel estimation improvement in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems using linear predictive coding

    Pilot based least square (LS) channel estimation is a commonly used channel estimation technique in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing based systems due to its simplicity. However, LS estimation does not handle the noise effect and hence suffers from performance degradation. Since the channel coefficients are correlated in time and hence show a slower variation than the noise, it is possible to encode the channel using linear predictive coding (LPC) without the noise. In this work, the channel is estimated from the pilots using LS estimation and in a second step the channel’s LS estimated is encoded as LPC coefficients to produce an improved channel estimation. The estimation technique is simulated for space-time block coding (STBC) based orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system and the bit error rate (BER) curves show improvement of the LPC estimation over the LS estimation of the channel

    New Signal and Algorithms for 5G/6G High Precision Train Positioning in Tunnel with Leaky Coaxial Cable

    High precision train positioning is a crucial component of intelligent transportation systems. Tunnels are commonly encountered in subways and mountainous regions. As part of the communication system infrastructure, Leaky CoaXial (LCX) Cable is widely equipped as antenna in tunnels with many advantages. LCX positioning holds great promise as a technology for rail applications in the upcoming B5G (beyond-5G) and 6G eras. This paper focuses on the LCX positioning methodology and proposes two novel algorithms along with a novel communication-positioning integration signal. Firstly, a novel algorithm called Multiple Slot Distinction (MSD) LCX positioning algorithm is proposed. The algorithm utilizes a generated pseudo spectrum to fully utilize the coupled signals radiated from different slots of LCX. This approach offers higher time resolution compared to traditional methods. To further improve the positioning accuracy to centimeter-level and increase the measuring frequency for fast trains, a novel communication-positioning integration signal is designed. It consists of traditional Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) and a significantly low power Fine Ranging Signal (FRS). FRS is configured to be continuous and superposed onto the cellular signal using Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) principle to minimize its interference to communication. A two-stage LCX positioning method is then executed: At the first stage, the closest slot between the receiver and LCX is estimated by the proposed MSD algorithm using PRS; At the second stage, centimeter-level positioning is achieved by tracking the carrier phase of the continuous FRS. This process is assisted by the closest slot estimation, which helps mitigate interference between neighboring slots and eliminate the integer ambiguities. Simulation results show our proposed LCX position methodology outperforms the existing ones and offer great potentials for future implementations

    Optimization of Beyond 5G Network Slicing for Smart City Applications

    Transitioning from the current fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology, the advent of beyond 5G (B5G) signifies a pivotal stride toward sixth generation (6G) communication technology. B5G, at its essence, harnesses end-to-end (E2E) network slicing (NS) technology, enabling the simultaneous accommodation of multiple logical networks with distinct performance requirements on a shared physical infrastructure. At the forefront of this implementation lies the critical process of network slice design, a phase central to the realization of efficient smart city networks. This thesis assumes a key role in the network slicing life cycle, emphasizing the analysis and formulation of optimal procedures for configuring, customizing, and allocating E2E network slices. The focus extends to catering to the unique demands of smart city applications, encompassing critical areas such as emergency response, smart buildings, and video surveillance. By addressing the intricacies of network slice design, the study navigates through the complexities of tailoring slices to meet specific application needs, thereby contributing to the seamless integration of diverse services within the smart city framework. Addressing the core challenge of NS, which involves the allocation of virtual networks on the physical topology with optimal resource allocation, the thesis introduces a dual integer linear programming (ILP) optimization problem. This problem is formulated to jointly minimize the embedding cost and latency. However, given the NP-hard nature of this ILP, finding an efficient alternative becomes a significant hurdle. In response, this thesis introduces a novel heuristic approach the matroid-based modified greedy breadth-first search (MGBFS) algorithm. This pioneering algorithm leverages matroid properties to navigate the process of virtual network embedding and resource allocation. By introducing this novel heuristic approach, the research aims to provide near-optimal solutions, overcoming the computational complexities associated with the dual integer linear programming problem. The proposed MGBFS algorithm not only addresses the connectivity, cost, and latency constraints but also outperforms the benchmark model delivering solutions remarkably close to optimal. This innovative approach represents a substantial advancement in the optimization of smart city applications, promising heightened connectivity, efficiency, and resource utilization within the evolving landscape of B5G-enabled communication technology

    Radar-based millimeter-Wave sensing for accurate 3D Indoor Positioning - Potentials and Challenges

    The 3D nature of modern smart applications has imposed significant 3D positioning accuracy requirements, especially in indoor environments. However, a major limitation of most existing indoor localization systems is their focus on estimating positions mainly in the horizontal plane, overlooking the crucial vertical dimension. This neglect presents considerable challenges in accurately determining the 3D position of devices such as drones and individuals across multiple floors of a building let alone the cm-level accuracy that might be required in many of these applications. To tackle this issue, millimeter-wave (mmWave) positioning systems have emerged as a promising technology offering high accuracy and robustness even in complex indoor environments. This paper aims to leverage the potential of mmWave radar technology to achieve precise ranging and angling measurements presenting a comprehensive methodology for evaluating the performance of mmWave sensors in terms of measurement precision while demonstrating the 3D positioning accuracy that can be achieved. The main challenges and the respective solutions associated with the use of mmWave sensors for indoor positioning are highlighted, providing valuable insights into their potentials and suitability for practical applications

    Optical Wireless Communications Using Intelligent Walls

    This chapter is devoted to discussing the integration of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs), or intelligent walls, in optical wireless communication (OWC) systems. IRS technology is a revolutionary concept that enables communication systems to harness the surrounding environment to control the propagation of light signals. Based on this, specific key performance indicators could be achieved by altering the electromagnetic response of the IRSs. In the following, we discuss the background theory and applications of IRSs and present a case study for an IRS-assisted indoor light-fidelity (LiFi) system. We then highlight some of the challenges related to this emerging concept and elaborate on future research directions

    A New Paradigm for Device-free Indoor Localization: Deep Learning with Error Vector Spectrum in Wi-Fi Systems

    The demand for device-free indoor localization using commercial Wi-Fi devices has rapidly increased in various fields due to its convenience and versatile applications. However, random frequency offset (RFO) in wireless channels poses challenges to the accuracy of indoor localization when using fluctuating channel state information (CSI). To mitigate the RFO problem, an error vector spectrum (EVS) is conceived thanks to its higher resolution of signal and robustness to RFO. To address these challenges, this paper proposed a novel error vector assisted learning (EVAL) for device-free indoor localization. The proposed EVAL scheme employs deep neural networks to classify the location of a person in the indoor environment by extracting ample channel features from the physical layer signals. We conducted realistic experiments based on OpenWiFi project to extract both EVS and CSI to examine the performance of different device-free localization techniques. Experimental results show that our proposed EVAL scheme outperforms conventional machine learning methods and benchmarks utilizing either CSI amplitude or phase information. Compared to most existing CSI-based localization schemes, a new paradigm with higher positioning accuracy by adopting EVS is revealed by our proposed EVAL system

    Channel Estimation for RIS-aided mmWave Massive MIMO System Using Few-bit ADCs

    Millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (massive MIMO) is one of the most promising technologies for the fifth generation and beyond wireless communication system. However, a large number of antennas incur high power consumption and hardware costs, and high-frequency communications place a heavy burden on the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at the base station (BS). Furthermore, it is too costly to equipping each antenna with a high-precision ADC in a large antenna array system. It is promising to adopt low-resolution ADCs to address this problem. In this paper, we investigate the cascaded channel estimation for a mmWave massive MIMO system aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with the BS equipped with few-bit ADCs. Due to the low-rank property of the cascaded channel, the estimation of the cascaded channel can be formulated as a low-rank matrix completion problem. We introduce a Bayesian optimal estimation framework for estimating the user-RIS-BS cascaded channel to tackle with the information loss caused by quantization. To implement the estimator and achieve the matrix completion, we use efficient bilinear generalized approximate message passing (BiG-AMP) algorithm. Extensive simulation results verify that our proposed method can accurately estimate the cascaded channel for the RIS-aided mmWave massive MIMO system with low-resolution ADCs

    RF Wireless Power and Data Transfer : Experiment-driven Analysis and Waveform Design

    The brisk deployment of the fifth generation (5G) mobile technology across the globe has accelerated the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) networks. While 5G provides the necessary bandwidth and latency to connect the trillions of IoT sensors to the internet, the challenge of powering such a multitude of sensors with a replenishable energy source remains. Far-field radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising technology to address this issue. Conventionally, the RF WPT concepts have been deemed inadequate to deliver wireless power due to the undeniably huge over-the-air propagation losses. Nonetheless, the radical decline in the energy requirement of simple sensing and computing devices over the last few decades has rekindled the interest in RF WPT as a feasible solution for wireless power delivery to IoT sensors. The primary goal in any RF WPT system is to maximize the harvested direct current (DC) power from the minuscule incident RF power. As a result, optimizing the receiver power efficiency is pivotal for an RF WPT system. On similar lines, it is essential to minimize the power losses at the transmitter in order to achieve a sustainable and economically viable RF WPT system. In this regard, this thesis explores the system-level study of an RF WPT system using a digital radio transmitter for applications where alternative analog transmit circuits are impractical. A prototype test-bed comprising low-cost software-defined radio (SDR) transmitter and an off-the-shelf RF energy-harvesting (EH) receiver is developed to experimentally analyze the impact of clipping and nonlinear amplification at the digital radio transmitter on digital baseband waveform. The use of an SDR allows leveraging the test-bed for the research on RF simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT); the true potential of this technology can be realized by utilizing the RF spectrum to transport data and power together. The experimental results indicate that a digital radio severely distorts high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) signals, thereby reducing their average output power and rendering them futile for RF WPT. On similar lines, another test-bed is developed to assess the impact of different waveforms, input impedance mismatch, incident RF power, and load on the receiver power efficiency of an RF WPT system. The experimental results provide the foundation and notion to develop a novel mathematical model for an RF EH receiver. The parametric model relates the harvested DC power to the power distribution of the envelope signal of the incident waveform, which is characterized by the amplitude, phase and frequency of the baseband waveform. The novel receiver model is independent of the receiver circuit’s matching network, rectifier configuration, number of diodes, load as well as input frequency. The efficacy of the model in accurately predicting the output DC power for any given power-level distribution is verified experimentally. Since the novel receiver model associates the output DC power to the parameters of the incident waveform, it is further leveraged to design optimal transmit wave-forms for RF WPT and SWIPT. The optimization problem reveals that a constant envelope signal with varying duty cycle is optimal for maximizing the harvested DC power. Consequently, a pulsed RF waveform is optimal for RF WPT, whereas a continuous phase modulated pulsed RF signal is suitable for RF SWIPT. The superior WPT performance of pulsed RF waveforms over multisine signals is demonstrated experimentally. Similarly, the pulsed phase-shift keying (PSK) signals exhibit superior receiver power efficiency than other communication signals. Nonetheless, varying the duty-cycle of pulsed PSK waveform leads to an efficiency—throughput trade-off in RF SWIPT. Finally, the SDR test-bed is used to evaluate the overall end-to-end power efficiency of different digital baseband waveforms through wireless measurements. The results indicate a 4-PSK modulated signal to be suitable for RF WPT considering the overall power efficiency of the system. The corresponding transmitter, channel and receiver power efficiencies are evaluated as well. The results demonstrate the transmitter power efficiency to be lower than the receiver power efficiency
