A Nonstochastic Information Theory for Communication and State Estimation
In communications, unknown variables are usually modelled as random
variables, and concepts such as independence, entropy and information are
defined in terms of the underlying probability distributions. In contrast,
control theory often treats uncertainties and disturbances as bounded unknowns
having no statistical structure. The area of networked control combines both
fields, raising the question of whether it is possible to construct meaningful
analogues of stochastic concepts such as independence, Markovness, entropy and
information without assuming a probability space. This paper introduces a
framework for doing so, leading to the construction of a maximin information
functional for nonstochastic variables. It is shown that the largest maximin
information rate through a memoryless, error-prone channel in this framework
coincides with the block-coding zero-error capacity of the channel. Maximin
information is then used to derive tight conditions for uniformly estimating
the state of a linear time-invariant system over such a channel, paralleling
recent results of Matveev and Savkin
Transmission of a continuous signal via one-bit capacity channel
We study the problem of the transmission of currently observed time variable
signals via a channel that is capable of sending a single binary signal only
for each measurement of the underlying process. For encoding and decoding, we
suggest a modification othe adaptive delta modulation algorithm. This
modification ensures tracking of time variable signals. We obtained upper
estimates for the error for the case of noiseless transmission
One-Bit Massive MIMO: Channel Estimation and High-Order Modulations
We investigate the information-theoretic throughout achievable on a fading
communication link when the receiver is equipped with one-bit analog-to-digital
converters (ADCs). The analysis is conducted for the setting where neither the
transmitter nor the receiver have a priori information on the realization of
the fading channels. This means that channel-state information needs to be
acquired at the receiver on the basis of the one-bit quantized channel outputs.
We show that least-squares (LS) channel estimation combined with joint pilot
and data processing is capacity achieving in the single-user,
single-receive-antenna case.
We also investigate the achievable uplink throughput in a massive
multiple-input multiple-output system where each element of the antenna array
at the receiver base-station feeds a one-bit ADC. We show that LS channel
estimation and maximum-ratio combining are sufficient to support both multiuser
operation and the use of high-order constellations. This holds in spite of the
severe nonlinearity introduced by the one-bit ADCs
