Optimized Design of Survivable MPLS over Optical Transport Networks. Optical Switching and Networking
In this paper we study different options for the survivability implementation
in MPLS over Optical Transport Networks in terms of network resource usage and
configuration cost. We investigate two approaches to the survivability
deployment: single layer and multilayer survivability and present various
methods for spare capacity allocation (SCA) to reroute disrupted traffic. The
comparative analysis shows the influence of the traffic granularity on the
survivability cost: for high bandwidth LSPs, close to the optical channel
capacity, the multilayer survivability outperforms the single layer one,
whereas for low bandwidth LSPs the single layer survivability is more
cost-efficient. For the multilayer survivability we demonstrate that by mapping
efficiently the spare capacity of the MPLS layer onto the resources of the
optical layer one can achieve up to 22% savings in the total configuration cost
and up to 37% in the optical layer cost. Further savings (up to 9 %) in the
wavelength use can be obtained with the integrated approach to network
configuration over the sequential one, however, at the increase in the
optimization problem complexity. These results are based on a cost model with
actual technology pricing and were obtained for networks targeted to a
nationwide coverage
Integrating process design and control: An application of optimal control to chemical processes
In this paper, the optimal design of process systems generically used in chemical industries is studied. The closely coupled nature of optimal design specification of the equipment, the determination of the optimal process parameters in steady-state, moreover, some issues of the application of optimal control is shown. The solution of the overall optimization problem including (i) optimal design of the equipment and (ii) specification of its optimal control strategy can be found relying on two different design concepts, namely, on the conventionally used sequential or, on the newly emerged simultaneous design approaches. This paper gives the theoretical background of the ideas and presents a comparative summary of the approaches. The two approaches are contrasted to each other in which the effects of the interaction of optimal process design and optimal control is highlighted. A new simultaneous optimization procedure providing economic and operability benefits over the traditional stand-alone approach is proposed. The applicability of the idea is demonstrated by means of a design study carried out for optimal design of a coaxial heat exchanger and a reactive distillation column for the synthesis of ethyl tert butyl ether (ETBE), relying on the benefits of the utilization of optimal control
Minimum-Information LQG Control - Part I: Memoryless Controllers
With the increased demand for power efficiency in feedback-control systems,
communication is becoming a limiting factor, raising the need to trade off the
external cost that they incur with the capacity of the controller's
communication channels. With a proper design of the channels, this translates
into a sequential rate-distortion problem, where we minimize the rate of
information required for the controller's operation under a constraint on its
external cost. Memoryless controllers are of particular interest both for the
simplicity and frugality of their implementation and as a basis for studying
more complex controllers. In this paper we present the optimality principle for
memoryless linear controllers that utilize minimal information rates to achieve
a guaranteed external-cost level. We also study the interesting and useful
phenomenology of the optimal controller, such as the principled reduction of
its order
Production Constraints and the NAIRU
This paper argues that the production constraints in the basic NAIRU model should be distinguished by type: capital constraints and labour constraints. It notes the failure to incorporate this phenomenon in standard macro models. Using panel data for UK manufacturing over 80 quarters we show that capital constraints became relatively more important during the 1980s as industry failed to match the increase in labour flexibility with rising capital investment
