Deep Learning for Free-Hand Sketch: A Survey
Free-hand sketches are highly illustrative, and have been widely used by
humans to depict objects or stories from ancient times to the present. The
recent prevalence of touchscreen devices has made sketch creation a much easier
task than ever and consequently made sketch-oriented applications increasingly
popular. The progress of deep learning has immensely benefited free-hand sketch
research and applications. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the
deep learning techniques oriented at free-hand sketch data, and the
applications that they enable. The main contents of this survey include: (i) A
discussion of the intrinsic traits and unique challenges of free-hand sketch,
to highlight the essential differences between sketch data and other data
modalities, e.g., natural photos. (ii) A review of the developments of
free-hand sketch research in the deep learning era, by surveying existing
datasets, research topics, and the state-of-the-art methods through a detailed
taxonomy and experimental evaluation. (iii) Promotion of future work via a
discussion of bottlenecks, open problems, and potential research directions for
the community.Comment: This paper is accepted by IEEE TPAM
Deep Sketch Hashing: Fast Free-hand Sketch-Based Image Retrieval
Free-hand sketch-based image retrieval (SBIR) is a specific cross-view
retrieval task, in which queries are abstract and ambiguous sketches while the
retrieval database is formed with natural images. Work in this area mainly
focuses on extracting representative and shared features for sketches and
natural images. However, these can neither cope well with the geometric
distortion between sketches and images nor be feasible for large-scale SBIR due
to the heavy continuous-valued distance computation. In this paper, we speed up
SBIR by introducing a novel binary coding method, named \textbf{Deep Sketch
Hashing} (DSH), where a semi-heterogeneous deep architecture is proposed and
incorporated into an end-to-end binary coding framework. Specifically, three
convolutional neural networks are utilized to encode free-hand sketches,
natural images and, especially, the auxiliary sketch-tokens which are adopted
as bridges to mitigate the sketch-image geometric distortion. The learned DSH
codes can effectively capture the cross-view similarities as well as the
intrinsic semantic correlations between different categories. To the best of
our knowledge, DSH is the first hashing work specifically designed for
category-level SBIR with an end-to-end deep architecture. The proposed DSH is
comprehensively evaluated on two large-scale datasets of TU-Berlin Extension
and Sketchy, and the experiments consistently show DSH's superior SBIR
accuracies over several state-of-the-art methods, while achieving significantly
reduced retrieval time and memory footprint.Comment: This paper will appear as a spotlight paper in CVPR201
Exploiting Deep Features for Remote Sensing Image Retrieval: A Systematic Investigation
Remote sensing (RS) image retrieval is of great significant for geological
information mining. Over the past two decades, a large amount of research on
this task has been carried out, which mainly focuses on the following three
core issues: feature extraction, similarity metric and relevance feedback. Due
to the complexity and multiformity of ground objects in high-resolution remote
sensing (HRRS) images, there is still room for improvement in the current
retrieval approaches. In this paper, we analyze the three core issues of RS
image retrieval and provide a comprehensive review on existing methods.
Furthermore, for the goal to advance the state-of-the-art in HRRS image
retrieval, we focus on the feature extraction issue and delve how to use
powerful deep representations to address this task. We conduct systematic
investigation on evaluating correlative factors that may affect the performance
of deep features. By optimizing each factor, we acquire remarkable retrieval
results on publicly available HRRS datasets. Finally, we explain the
experimental phenomenon in detail and draw conclusions according to our
analysis. Our work can serve as a guiding role for the research of
content-based RS image retrieval
