Variable neural networks for adaptive control of nonlinear systems
This paper is concerned with the adaptive control of continuous-time nonlinear dynamical systems using neural networks. A novel neural network architecture, referred to as a variable neural network, is proposed and shown to be useful in approximating the unknown nonlinearities of dynamical systems. In the variable neural networks, the number of basis functions can be either increased or decreased with time, according to specified design strategies, so that the network will not overfit or underfit the data set. Based on the Gaussian radial basis function (GRBF) variable neural network, an adaptive control scheme is presented. The location of the centers and the determination of the widths of the GRBFs in the variable neural network are analyzed to make a compromise between orthogonality and smoothness. The weight-adaptive laws developed using the Lyapunov synthesis approach guarantee the stability of the overall control scheme, even in the presence of modeling error(s). The tracking errors converge to the required accuracy through the adaptive control algorithm derived by combining the variable neural network and Lyapunov synthesis techniques. Novel anisotropic continuum-discrete damage model capable of representing localized failure of massive structures. Part II: identification from tests under heterogeneous stress field
In Part I of this paper we have presented a simple model capable of
describing the localized failure of a massive structure. In this part, we
discuss the identification of the model parameters from two kinds of
experiments: a uniaxial tensile test and a three-point bending test. The former
is used only for illustration of material parameter response dependence, and we
focus mostly upon the latter, discussing the inverse optimization problem for

Intelligent flight control systems
The capabilities of flight control systems can be enhanced by designing them to emulate functions of natural intelligence. Intelligent control functions fall in three categories. Declarative actions involve decision-making, providing models for system monitoring, goal planning, and system/scenario identification. Procedural actions concern skilled behavior and have parallels in guidance, navigation, and adaptation. Reflexive actions are spontaneous, inner-loop responses for control and estimation. Intelligent flight control systems learn knowledge of the aircraft and its mission and adapt to changes in the flight environment. Cognitive models form an efficient basis for integrating 'outer-loop/inner-loop' control functions and for developing robust parallel-processing algorithms
Stable Electromyographic Sequence Prediction During Movement Transitions using Temporal Convolutional Networks
Transient muscle movements influence the temporal structure of myoelectric
signal patterns, often leading to unstable prediction behavior from
movement-pattern classification methods. We show that temporal convolutional
network sequential models leverage the myoelectric signal's history to discover
contextual temporal features that aid in correctly predicting movement
intentions, especially during interclass transitions. We demonstrate
myoelectric classification using temporal convolutional networks to effect 3
simultaneous hand and wrist degrees-of-freedom in an experiment involving nine
human-subjects. Temporal convolutional networks yield significant
performance improvements over other state-of-the-art methods in terms of both

An agent-driven semantical identifier using radial basis neural networks and reinforcement learning
Due to the huge availability of documents in digital form, and the deception
possibility raise bound to the essence of digital documents and the way they
are spread, the authorship attribution problem has constantly increased its
relevance. Nowadays, authorship attribution,for both information retrieval and
analysis, has gained great importance in the context of security, trust and
copyright preservation. This work proposes an innovative multi-agent driven
machine learning technique that has been developed for authorship attribution.
By means of a preprocessing for word-grouping and time-period related analysis
of the common lexicon, we determine a bias reference level for the recurrence
frequency of the words within analysed texts, and then train a Radial Basis
Neural Networks (RBPNN)-based classifier to identify the correct author. The
main advantage of the proposed approach lies in the generality of the semantic
analysis, which can be applied to different contexts and lexical domains,
without requiring any modification. Moreover, the proposed system is able to
incorporate an external input, meant to tune the classifier, and then

State-of-the-art in aerodynamic shape optimisation methods
Aerodynamic optimisation has become an indispensable component for any aerodynamic design over the past 60 years, with applications to aircraft, cars, trains, bridges, wind turbines, internal pipe flows, and cavities, among others, and is thus relevant in many facets of technology. With advancements in computational power, automated design optimisation procedures have become more competent, however, there is an ambiguity and bias throughout the literature with regards to relative performance of optimisation architectures and employed algorithms. This paper provides a well-balanced critical review of the dominant optimisation approaches that have been integrated with aerodynamic theory for the purpose of shape optimisation. A total of 229 papers, published in more than 120 journals and conference proceedings, have been classified into 6 different optimisation algorithm approaches. The material cited includes some of the most well-established authors and publications in the field of aerodynamic optimisation. This paper aims to eliminate bias toward certain algorithms by analysing the limitations, drawbacks, and the benefits of the most utilised optimisation approaches. This review provides comprehensive but straightforward insight for non-specialists and reference detailing the current state for specialist practitioners
