    EEG-based brain-computer interfaces using motor-imagery: techniques and challenges.

    Electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), particularly those using motor-imagery (MI) data, have the potential to become groundbreaking technologies in both clinical and entertainment settings. MI data is generated when a subject imagines the movement of a limb. This paper reviews state-of-the-art signal processing techniques for MI EEG-based BCIs, with a particular focus on the feature extraction, feature selection and classification techniques used. It also summarizes the main applications of EEG-based BCIs, particularly those based on MI data, and finally presents a detailed discussion of the most prevalent challenges impeding the development and commercialization of EEG-based BCIs

    Meta Heuristics based Machine Learning and Neural Mass Modelling Allied to Brain Machine Interface

    New understanding of the brain function and increasing availability of low-cost-non-invasive electroencephalograms (EEGs) recording devices have made brain-computer-interface (BCI) as an alternative option to augmentation of human capabilities by providing a new non-muscular channel for sending commands, which could be used to activate electronic or mechanical devices based on modulation of thoughts. In this project, our emphasis will be on how to develop such a BCI using fuzzy rule-based systems (FRBSs), metaheuristics and Neural Mass Models (NMMs). In particular, we treat the BCI system as an integrated problem consisting of mathematical modelling, machine learning and classification. Four main steps are involved in designing a BCI system: 1) data acquisition, 2) feature extraction, 3) classification and 4) transferring the classification outcome into control commands for extended peripheral capability. Our focus has been placed on the first three steps. This research project aims to investigate and develop a novel BCI framework encompassing classification based on machine learning, optimisation and neural mass modelling. The primary aim in this project is to bridge the gap of these three different areas in a bid to design a more reliable and accurate communication path between the brain and external world. To achieve this goal, the following objectives have been investigated: 1) Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) EEG data are collected from human subjects and pre-processed; 2) Feature extraction procedure is implemented to detect and quantify the characteristics of brain activities which indicates the intention of the subject.; 3) a classification mechanism called an Immune Inspired Multi-Objective Fuzzy Modelling Classification algorithm (IMOFM-C), is adapted as a binary classification approach for classifying binary EEG data. Then, the DDAG-Distance aggregation approach is proposed to aggregate the outcomes of IMOFM-C based binary classifiers for multi-class classification; 4) building on IMOFM-C, a preference-based ensemble classification framework known as IMOFM-CP is proposed to enhance the convergence performance and diversity of each individual component classifier, leading to an improved overall classification accuracy of multi-class EEG data; and 5) finally a robust parameterising approach which combines a single-objective GA and a clustering algorithm with a set of newly devised objective and penalty functions is proposed to obtain robust sets of synaptic connectivity parameters of a thalamic neural mass model (NMM).     Patient-specific epileptic seizure detection in long-term EEG recording in paediatric patients with intractable seizures

    Over recent years, due to the increase in the epileptic patient population, issues of diagnosing and treatment of epilepsy have become more and more prominent and much research has been done in this field in consequence. However, there are still many gaps and lack of knowledge in interpreting Electroencephalograph (EEG) signals in order to solve the problem. Particular problems in this area include difficulties in detecting the seizure events (due to the different seizure types and their variability from patient to patient or even in an individual over time), and dealing with long-term EEG recordings, which is an onerous and time consuming task for electroencephalographers. The thesis discusses the two problem areas using EEG data from four subjects with overall 21 hours of recording from the CHB-MIT scalp benchmark EEG dataset. We propose a patient specific seizure detection technique, which selects the optimal feature subsets, and train a dedicated classifier for each patient in order to maximize the classification performance. To exploit the characteristics of a patient’s EEG pattern as much as possible, we used a large set of features in the proposed framework, namely time domain, frequency domain, time-frequency domain and nonlinear features, and selected the most crucial features among them by using Conditional Mutual Information Maximization (CMIM) technique. We further performed extensive comparative evaluations against 6 other feature selection methods to demonstrate the superiority of the CMIM. Support Vector Machine (SVM) with the linear kernel is used as the classifier. The experimental results show a delicate classification performance over the test set, i.e. an average of 90.62% sensitivity and 99.32% specificity are acquired when all channels and recordings are used to form a composite feature vector. In addition, an average sensitivity and specificity rates of 93.78% and 99.05% are obtained using CMIM, respectively

    Telemetry Controlled Brain Machine Interface To Train Cortical Circuits

    The goal of this dissertation is to document functional reorganization in rat primary somatosensory (SI) cortex. This work proposes to strengthen the interhemispheric connection between homotopic sites in forelimb barrel cortex (FBC) through intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) and induce functional reorganization whereby neurons in the FBC respond to new input from the ipsilateral forelimb. Furthermore, a wireless microstimulation and recording device was developed for producing enhancement and functional reorganization of cortical circuits in FBC. The goal of Experiment One was to test the hypothesis that layer V neurons projected to homotopic sites in contralateral layer V FBC. Retrograde or anterograde neuronal tracer injections were made to characterize the distribution of callosal projecting neurons in contralateral SI that terminate in layer VFBC and where layer V callosal projecting neurons terminate in contralateral SI. The results showed a differential pattern of interhemispheric connectivity between homotopic forelimb representations in layer V FBC. The goal of Experiment Two was to test the hypothesis that ICMS enhances the interhemispheric pathway and leads to functional reorganization. ICMS was delivered in vivo to the interhemispheric pathway between homotopic layer V barrel cortices and multiunit recordings were made to assess changes in firing rate. The results showed ICMS strengthens interhemispheric connectivity and leads to functional reorganization in rat FBC. The goal of Experiment Three was to develop an interactive telemetry-based neural interface device for the controlled delivery of ICMS and recording response activity in rodent. The device successfully delivered microstimulation to a single electrode in SIand recorded evoked responses from a separate electrode in contralateral SI. Its performance was shown to be comparable to commercial stimulating and recording systems. This system serves as a prototype of a wearable compact device. The data suggest that neurons in rat FBC can be induced to respond to new input from the ipsilateral forelimb by enhancing the interhemispheric pathway with ICMS. An interactive system for the controlled delivery of telemetry-based microstimulation and real-time recordings has been demonstrated in vivo. These studies provide the framework for subsequent studies of interhemispheric pathway enhancement and functional reorganization in freely moving rats

In this book, we aimed to attract researchers who are interested in the application of signal processing methods to different biomedical signals, such as an electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyogram (EMG), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), electrocardiogram (ECG), galvanic skin response, pulse oximetry, photoplethysmogram (PPG), etc. We encouraged new signal processing methods or the use of existing signal processing methods for its novel application in physiological signals to help healthcare providers make better decisions
