School integration has been a contentious policy issue in Little Rock since the 1950s. Recent charter expansions have raised questions about the current level of integration in public schools (charter and traditional) in the Little Rock Area. As part of our series on integration in Little Rock, this brief examines the prevalence of hyper segregated white, black, and economically disadvantaged schools, and calculates the average difference between school demographics and the area’s demographics

An Analysis of the Impact of Charter Schools on Desegregation Efforts in Little Rock, Arkansas

    Get PDF
The aim of this report is to address the challenge by the Little Rock School District (LRSD) that open-enrollment charter schools in Pulaski County (PC) are impeding the efforts of the three PC school districts (Little Rock, North Little Rock (NLRSD), and Pulaski County Special (PCSSD)) to become racially integrated. A key motivation for this analysis is the ongoing debate about how expanded school choice, in this case charter schools, impacts racial segregation. Critics of charter schools argue that these schools lead to greater racial segregation, whereas proponents of charter schools suggest that there is no necessary link between racial segregation and the existence of charter schools. Indeed, some charter advocates contend that charters and parental choice can actually lead to more racial integration for students

PROPORTIONALITY: THE STRUGGLE FOR BALANCE IN U.S. IMMIGRATION POLICY†

In September 1957, Governor Orval Faubus dispatched Arkansas National Guard troops to prevent black students from entering Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Eisenhower Administration responded by sending Justice Department lawyers to enter school desegregation litigation brought by the NAACP that was already pending before the U.S. District Court in Arkansas. The court granted the preliminary injunction sought by the Justice Department and the NAACP, holding that federal law preempted state interference with school integration. A few weeks later, in the face of local resistance edged with hatred and violence, President Eisenhower ordered the famous 101st Airborne to Arkansas to maintain order and safeguard the black school children. The court\u27s injunction was upheld on appeal, and Central High was eventually desegregated. The most important legacy of the conflict, however, may have been the images from the streets of Little Rock–striking photographs of tense black students, sturdy federal troops, and a surging, spitting crowd of white protesters

This hands-on activity covers the basics of rock identification. After a brief discussion of the terms 'rock' and 'mineral', students will study the characteristics and classifications of the three major rock groups (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary). Using an online tutorial to test their knowledge and to learn more about rocks, they will identify 10 different specimens, record their observations, and provide a name for each. Overcoming Challenges of Teaching Earth History Classes for Teachers in a Rock-free, Urban Environment

Instructing university-level Earth history to future teachers is made all the more difficult when it is being done in an urban environment devoid of any local rock outcroppings. At the University of South Alabama, which is located along the rock-free central Gulf Coast, researchers have attempted to improve Earth history instruction to education majors. This paper describes their approach. The authors outline how they encouraged science composite education majors to think locally in order to better relate the world of geology to their students in the Alabama school system. They conclude with a brief discussion about the importance of providing field exposure to the teachers. Though this paper focuses on a local solution suitable for southwestern Alabama, the approach is easily exportable to institutions in other urbanized or rock-free parts of the world where similar problems doubtless occur.
