Wide-Angle Foveation for All-Purpose Use
This paper proposes a model of a wide-angle space-variant image that provides a guide for designing a fovea sensor. First, an advanced wide-angle foveated (AdWAF) model is formulated, taking all-purpose use into account. This proposed model uses both Cartesian (linear) coordinates and logarithmic coordinates in both planar projection and spherical projection. Thus, this model divides its wide-angle field of view into four areas, such that it can represent an image by various types of lenses, flexibly. The first simulation compares with other lens models, in terms of image height and resolution. The result shows that the AdWAF model can reduce image data by 13.5%, compared to a log-polar lens model, both having the same resolution in the central field of view. The AdWAF image is remapped from an actual input image by the prototype fovea lens, a wide-angle foveated (WAF) lens, using the proposed model. The second simulation compares with other foveation models used for the existing log-polar chip and vision system. The third simulation estimates a scale-invariant property by comparing with the existing fovea lens and the log-polar lens. The AdWAF model gives its planar logarithmic part a complete scale-invariant property, while the fovea lens has 7.6% error at most in its spherical logarithmic part. The fourth simulation computes optical flow in order to examine the unidirectional property when the fovea sensor by the AdWAF model moves, compared to the pinhole camera. The result obtained by using a concept of a virtual cylindrical screen indicates that the proposed model has advantages in terms of computation and application of the optical flow when the fovea sensor moves forward
DeMoN: Depth and Motion Network for Learning Monocular Stereo
In this paper we formulate structure from motion as a learning problem. We
train a convolutional network end-to-end to compute depth and camera motion
from successive, unconstrained image pairs. The architecture is composed of
multiple stacked encoder-decoder networks, the core part being an iterative
network that is able to improve its own predictions. The network estimates not
only depth and motion, but additionally surface normals, optical flow between
the images and confidence of the matching. A crucial component of the approach
is a training loss based on spatial relative differences. Compared to
traditional two-frame structure from motion methods, results are more accurate
and more robust. In contrast to the popular depth-from-single-image networks,
DeMoN learns the concept of matching and, thus, better generalizes to

DeepMatching: Hierarchical Deformable Dense Matching
We introduce a novel matching algorithm, called DeepMatching, to compute
dense correspondences between images. DeepMatching relies on a hierarchical,
multi-layer, correlational architecture designed for matching images and was
inspired by deep convolutional approaches. The proposed matching algorithm can
handle non-rigid deformations and repetitive textures and efficiently
determines dense correspondences in the presence of significant changes between
images. We evaluate the performance of DeepMatching, in comparison with
state-of-the-art matching algorithms, on the Mikolajczyk (Mikolajczyk et al
2005), the MPI-Sintel (Butler et al 2012) and the Kitti (Geiger et al 2013)
datasets. DeepMatching outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms and shows
excellent results in particular for repetitive textures.We also propose a
method for estimating optical flow, called DeepFlow, by integrating
DeepMatching in the large displacement optical flow (LDOF) approach of Brox and
Malik (2011). Compared to existing matching algorithms, additional robustness
to large displacements and complex motion is obtained thanks to our matching
approach. DeepFlow obtains competitive performance on public benchmarks for
optical flow estimation
SO(3)-invariant asymptotic observers for dense depth field estimation based on visual data and known camera motion
In this paper, we use known camera motion associated to a video sequence of a
static scene in order to estimate and incrementally refine the surrounding
depth field. We exploit the SO(3)-invariance of brightness and depth fields
dynamics to customize standard image processing techniques. Inspired by the
Horn-Schunck method, we propose a SO(3)-invariant cost to estimate the depth
field. At each time step, this provides a diffusion equation on the unit
Riemannian sphere that is numerically solved to obtain a real time depth field
estimation of the entire field of view. Two asymptotic observers are derived
from the governing equations of dynamics, respectively based on optical flow
and depth estimations: implemented on noisy sequences of synthetic images as
well as on real data, they perform a more robust and accurate depth estimation.
This approach is complementary to most methods employing state observers for
range estimation, which uniquely concern single or isolated feature points.Comment: Submitte
Motion Deblurring in the Wild
The task of image deblurring is a very ill-posed problem as both the image
and the blur are unknown. Moreover, when pictures are taken in the wild, this
task becomes even more challenging due to the blur varying spatially and the
occlusions between the object. Due to the complexity of the general image model
we propose a novel convolutional network architecture which directly generates
the sharp image.This network is built in three stages, and exploits the
benefits of pyramid schemes often used in blind deconvolution. One of the main
difficulties in training such a network is to design a suitable dataset. While
useful data can be obtained by synthetically blurring a collection of images,
more realistic data must be collected in the wild. To obtain such data we use a
high frame rate video camera and keep one frame as the sharp image and frame
average as the corresponding blurred image. We show that this realistic dataset
