Partitioning intensity inhomogeneity colour images via Saliency-based active contour
Partitioning or segmenting intensity inhomogeneity colour images is a challenging problem in computer vision and image shape analysis. Given an input image, the active contour model (ACM) which is formulated in variational framework is regularly used to partition objects in the image. A selective type of variational ACM approach is better than a global approach for segmenting specific target objects, which is useful for applications such as tumor segmentation or tissue classification in medical imaging. However, the existing selective ACMs yield unsatisfactory outcomes when performing the segmentation for colour (vector-valued) with intensity variations. Therefore, our new approach incorporates both local image fitting and saliency maps into a new variational selective ACM to tackle the problem. The euler-lagrange (EL) equations were presented to solve the proposed model. Thirty combinations of synthetic and medical images were tested. The visual observation and quantitative results show that the proposed model outshines the other existing models by average, with the accuracy of 2.23% more than the compared model and the Dice and Jaccard coefficients which were around 12.78% and 19.53% higher, respectively, than the compared model
Quality-Oriented Perceptual HEVC Based on the Spatiotemporal Saliency Detection Model
Perceptual video coding (PVC) can provide a lower bitrate with the same visual quality compared with traditional H.265/high efficiency video coding (HEVC). In this work, a novel H.265/HEVC-compliant PVC framework is proposed based on the video saliency model. Firstly, both an effective and efficient spatiotemporal saliency model is used to generate a video saliency map. Secondly, a perceptual coding scheme is developed based on the saliency map. A saliency-based quantization control algorithm is proposed to reduce the bitrate. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed perceptual coding scheme shows its superiority in objective and subjective tests, achieving up to a 9.46% bitrate reduction with negligible subjective and objective quality loss. The advantage of the proposed method is the high quality adapted for a high-definition video application
Inner and Inter Label Propagation: Salient Object Detection in the Wild
In this paper, we propose a novel label propagation based method for saliency
detection. A key observation is that saliency in an image can be estimated by
propagating the labels extracted from the most certain background and object
regions. For most natural images, some boundary superpixels serve as the
background labels and the saliency of other superpixels are determined by
ranking their similarities to the boundary labels based on an inner propagation
scheme. For images of complex scenes, we further deploy a 3-cue-center-biased
objectness measure to pick out and propagate foreground labels. A
co-transduction algorithm is devised to fuse both boundary and objectness
labels based on an inter propagation scheme. The compactness criterion decides
whether the incorporation of objectness labels is necessary, thus greatly
enhancing computational efficiency. Results on five benchmark datasets with
pixel-wise accurate annotations show that the proposed method achieves superior
performance compared with the newest state-of-the-arts in terms of different
evaluation metrics.Comment: The full version of the TIP 2015 publicatio
Object Discovery From a Single Unlabeled Image by Mining Frequent Itemset With Multi-scale Features
TThe goal of our work is to discover dominant objects in a very general
setting where only a single unlabeled image is given. This is far more
challenge than typical co-localization or weakly-supervised localization tasks.
To tackle this problem, we propose a simple but effective pattern mining-based
method, called Object Location Mining (OLM), which exploits the advantages of
data mining and feature representation of pre-trained convolutional neural
networks (CNNs). Specifically, we first convert the feature maps from a
pre-trained CNN model into a set of transactions, and then discovers frequent
patterns from transaction database through pattern mining techniques. We
observe that those discovered patterns, i.e., co-occurrence highlighted
regions, typically hold appearance and spatial consistency. Motivated by this
observation, we can easily discover and localize possible objects by merging
relevant meaningful patterns. Extensive experiments on a variety of benchmarks
demonstrate that OLM achieves competitive localization performance compared
with the state-of-the-art methods. We also evaluate our approach compared with
unsupervised saliency detection methods and achieves competitive results on
seven benchmark datasets. Moreover, we conduct experiments on fine-grained
classification to show that our proposed method can locate the entire object
and parts accurately, which can benefit to improving the classification results
significantly
Integrated Deep and Shallow Networks for Salient Object Detection
Deep convolutional neural network (CNN) based salient object detection
methods have achieved state-of-the-art performance and outperform those
unsupervised methods with a wide margin. In this paper, we propose to integrate
deep and unsupervised saliency for salient object detection under a unified
framework. Specifically, our method takes results of unsupervised saliency
(Robust Background Detection, RBD) and normalized color images as inputs, and
directly learns an end-to-end mapping between inputs and the corresponding
saliency maps. The color images are fed into a Fully Convolutional Neural
Networks (FCNN) adapted from semantic segmentation to exploit high-level
semantic cues for salient object detection. Then the results from deep FCNN and
RBD are concatenated to feed into a shallow network to map the concatenated
feature maps to saliency maps. Finally, to obtain a spatially consistent
saliency map with sharp object boundaries, we fuse superpixel level saliency
map at multi-scale. Extensive experimental results on 8 benchmark datasets
demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art
approaches with a margin.Comment: Accepted by IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP)
