Developing efficient web-based GIS applications
There is an increase in the number of web-based GIS applications over the recent years. This paper describes different mapping technologies, database standards, and web application development standards that are relevant to the development of web-based GIS applications. Different mapping technologies for displaying geo-referenced data are available and can be used in different situations. This paper also explains why Oracle is the system of choice for geospatial applications that need to handle large amounts of data. Wireframing and design patterns have been shown to be useful in making GIS web applications efficient, scalable and usable, and should be an important part of every web-based GIS application. A range of different development technologies are available, and their use in different operating environments has been discussed here in some detail
Preventing DDoS using Bloom Filter: A Survey
Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) is a menace for service provider and
prominent issue in network security. Defeating or defending the DDoS is a prime
challenge. DDoS make a service unavailable for a certain time. This phenomenon
harms the service providers, and hence, loss of business revenue. Therefore,
DDoS is a grand challenge to defeat. There are numerous mechanism to defend
DDoS, however, this paper surveys the deployment of Bloom Filter in defending a
DDoS attack. The Bloom Filter is a probabilistic data structure for membership
query that returns either true or false. Bloom Filter uses tiny memory to store
information of large data. Therefore, packet information is stored in Bloom
Filter to defend and defeat DDoS. This paper presents a survey on DDoS
defending technique using Bloom Filter.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure. This article is accepted for publication in EAI

MongoDB Performance In The Cloud
Web applications are growing at a staggering rate every day. As web applications keep getting more complex, their data storage requirements tend to grow exponentially. Databases play an important role in the way web applications store their information. Mongodb is a document store database that does not have strict schemas that RDBMs require and can grow horizontally without performance degradation. MongoDB brings possibilities for different storage scenarios and allow the programmers to use the database as a storage that fits their needs, not the other way around. Scaling MongoDB horizontally requires tens to hundreds of servers, making it very difficult to afford this kind of setup on dedicated hardware. By moving the database into the cloud, this opens up a possibility for low cost virtual machine instances at reasonable prices. There are many cloud services to choose from and without testing performance on each one, there is very little information out there. This paper provides benchmarks on the performance of MongoDB in the cloud
A batch scheduler with high level components
In this article we present the design choices and the evaluation of a batch
scheduler for large clusters, named OAR. This batch scheduler is based upon an
original design that emphasizes on low software complexity by using high level
tools. The global architecture is built upon the scripting language Perl and
the relational database engine Mysql. The goal of the project OAR is to prove
that it is possible today to build a complex system for ressource management
using such tools without sacrificing efficiency and scalability. Currently, our
system offers most of the important features implemented by other batch
schedulers such as priority scheduling (by queues), reservations, backfilling
and some global computing support. Despite the use of high level tools, our
experiments show that our system has performances close to other systems.
Furthermore, OAR is currently exploited for the management of 700 nodes (a
metropolitan GRID) and has shown good efficiency and robustness
Internet of Things Cloud: Architecture and Implementation
The Internet of Things (IoT), which enables common objects to be intelligent
and interactive, is considered the next evolution of the Internet. Its
pervasiveness and abilities to collect and analyze data which can be converted
into information have motivated a plethora of IoT applications. For the
successful deployment and management of these applications, cloud computing
techniques are indispensable since they provide high computational capabilities
as well as large storage capacity. This paper aims at providing insights about
the architecture, implementation and performance of the IoT cloud. Several
potential application scenarios of IoT cloud are studied, and an architecture
is discussed regarding the functionality of each component. Moreover, the
implementation details of the IoT cloud are presented along with the services
that it offers. The main contributions of this paper lie in the combination of
the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Message Queuing Telemetry Transport
(MQTT) servers to offer IoT services in the architecture of the IoT cloud with
various techniques to guarantee high performance. Finally, experimental results
are given in order to demonstrate the service capabilities of the IoT cloud
under certain conditions.Comment: 19pages, 4figures, IEEE Communications Magazin
