The Simplified Models Approach to Constraining Supersymmetry

The current work studies the applicability of Simplified Model Spectra (SMS) framework to Supersymmetric (SUSY) scenarios. The SMS framework is useful as it involves a small number of parameters and presents the experimental results for SUSY searches in a general way. The SMS framework does not depend on a particular theory, therefore it is useful for a generic re-interpretation and test of scenarios. To use the SMS framework to constraint the SUSY parameter space, two automated tools were used: SModelS and Fastlim. The accomplishment of both tools, just as the strengths and limitations are remarked in this work. Finally, it was taken a specific SUSY scenario -Natural SUSY (NSUSY) and analyzed using both SModelS and Fastlim. As a result, it is shown that it is possible to constrain NSUSY scenarios within the SMS framework, but, to reach a more generic interpretation of the parameter space, improvements in both codes are needed.

SModelS: a tool for interpreting simplified-model results from the LHC and its application to supersymmetry

We present a general procedure to decompose Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) collider signatures presenting a Z2 symmetry into Simplified Model Spectrum (SMS) topologies. Our method provides a way to cast BSM predictions for the LHC in a model independent framework, which can be directly confronted with the relevant experimental constraints. Our concrete implementation currently focusses on supersymmetry searches with missing energy, for which a large variety of SMS results from ATLAS and CMS are available. As show-case examples we apply our procedure to two scans of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We discuss how the SMS limits constrain various particle masses and which regions of parameter space remain unchallenged by the current SMS interpretations of the LHC results.Comment: v3: Version published in EPJ

Voice-mediated text messaging service: a possiblity to enhance current text messaging service

As a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) design practice, this paper first drew on several scenarios for Short-text Messaging Services (SMS) on a mobile telephone technology. And a new prototype for SMS was given to participants. While the participants were using the prototype, the initial scenarios were extended by the participants’ recognition of the new prototype, resulting in new scenarios for the future system development. This lightweight design practice was intended to educate HCI practitioners, in order to show the practicality of the HCI design process – task-artefact cycle framework

Development of an integrated remote monitoring technique and its application to para-stressing bridge system

Bridge monitoring system via information technology is capable of providing more accurate knowledge of bridge performance characteristics than traditional strategies. This paper describes not only an integrated Internet monitoring system that consists of a stand-alone monitoring system (SMS) and a Web-based Internet monitoring system (IMS) for bridge maintenance but also its application to para-stressing bridge system as an intelligent structure. IMS, as a Web-based system, is capable of addressing the remote monitoring by introducing measuring information derived from SMS into the system through Internet or intranet connected by either PHS or LAN. Moreover, the key functions of IMS such as data management system, condition assessment, and decision making with the proposed system are also introduced in this paper. Another goal of this study is to establish the framework of a para-stressing bridge system which is an intelligent bridge by integrating the bridge monitoring information into the system to control the bridge performance automatically.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Safe Minimum Standards in Dynamic Resource Problems—Conditions for Living on the Edge of Risk

Abstract Safe Minimum Standards (SMSs) have been advocated as a policy rule for environmental problems where uncertainty about risks and consequences are thought to be profound. This paper explores the rationale for such a policy within a dynamic framework and derives conditions for when SMS can be summarily dismissed as a policy choice and for when SMS can be defended as an optimal policy based on standard economic criteria. We have determined that these conditions can be checked with quite limited information about damages and risks. In order to analyze the SMSs in a dynamic setting, we have developed a method for solving optimal control problems where the state space is divided into risky and non-risky subsets.safe minimum standards; optimal control; critical zone; threshold effects; mixed risk spaces
