The synthesis and the catalytic (catalase and tyrosinase) activities of amino acid copper complexes covalently grafted onto silica gel
In this work the synthesis, structure and certain catalytic properties of amino acid copper complexes covalently grafted onto silica gel are described. The following enzyme mimicking complexes were synthesized and characterised by experimental (FT-IR) and computational (mainly MM+) methods: BOC-His-Cu/silica gel, BOC-Tyr-Cu/silica gel, His-OMe-Cu/silica gel, Tyr-OMe-Cu/silica gel, H-His-Cu/silica gel, H-Tyr-Cu/silica gel His-OH-Cu/silica gel and Tyr-OH-Cu/silica gel. The activities of these substances were also tested in the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. The majority of the substances proved to be good enzyme mimics displaying either catalase or tyrosinase activity

Indexación: Web of Science; ScieloThe silylant 3-cloropropyltriethoxysilyl was anchored over silica gel in anhydrous conditions in order to react with thiourea to obtain modified silica gel with thiouronium. The aim to obtain an inorganic support that is able to hijack metals from the VIII group such as palladium. The product was characterized by Sbet and FTIR infrared spectroscopy. For the determination of the structure in the modified silica gel NMR spectra of silicon and carbon were preformed in solid state. The coordination form of the modified silica gel to the metal was studied computationally in the context of the DFT theory, using the ADF code. This was a collaborative work with "Fundación Chile" for the recuperation of precious metals from the mining industry.http://ref.scielo.org/gk7rm
SOD activity of immobilized enzyme mimicking complexes
A binuclear, imidazolato-bridged, possible superoxide dismutase-mimicking complex (Cu(II)-diethylenetriamino-μ-imidazolato-Zn(II)-tris-aminoethylamine-triperchlorate) was prepared and immobilized on silica gel or among the layers of montmorillonite. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of the complex before and after immobilization was studied by a SOD assay. It was found that the SOD activity of the host-free complex decreased somewhat when montmorillonite was the host, however, using silica gel as host it increased

Drying of post-harvest rough rice with silica gel: A preliminary investigation
Rice drying operations can encounter problems of over drying and losses in head rice yield (HRY) through the formation of fissures. Typical rice drying methods also utilize large volumes of expensive fossil fuels to dry the kernels. Drying of rice with a solid desiccant such as silica gel has several potential advantages that avoid some of these problems. Two cultivars of long-grain rough rice, ‘Cheniere’ and ‘Wells’ with harvest moisture contents of 17.8% and 22.0%, respectively, were dried over a 48-h period with various ratios of rough rice-to-silica gel. It was found that an intimate mixture of 3:1 rough rice to silica gel was sufficient to dry these rice lots to 12.5% and 14.3% within 12 h, respectively. Head rice yields of desiccant-dried rice showed no considerable differences from the control. Rough-rice drying curves for all rough rice-to-silica gel mixtures followed exponential relationships

Procedure to prepare transparent silica gels
This invention relates to the production of silica gels and in particular to a process for the preparation of silica gels which can be used as a crystal growth medium that simulates the convectionless environment of space to produce structurally perfect crystals. Modern utilizations of substances in electronics, such as radio transmitters and high frequency microphones, often require single crystals with controlled purity and structural perfection. The near convectionless environment of silica gel suppresses nucleation, thereby reducing the competitive nature of crystal growth. This competition limits the size and perfection of the crystal; and it is obviously desirable to suppress nucleation until, ideally, only one crystal grows in a predetermined location. A silica gel is not a completely convectionless environment like outer space, but is the closest known environment to that of outer space that can be created on Earth
Production of silica gel from residual rice husk ash
This paper presents a study on the production of silica gel in hydrothermal process using residual rice husk ash. Measurements of the chemical composition, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, particle size distribution, and pozzolanic activity were carried out in order to characterize the obtained material, and the optimal silica gel was selected for use as a mineral additive in cement pastes. The compressive strengths were determined for cement pastes containing silica gel (0.0, 2.5 or 5% by mass) in different times.
