SIDRA: a blind algorithm for signal detection in photometric surveys
We present the Signal Detection using Random-Forest Algorithm (SIDRA). SIDRA
is a detection and classification algorithm based on the Machine Learning
technique (Random Forest). The goal of this paper is to show the power of SIDRA
for quick and accurate signal detection and classification. We first diagnose
the power of the method with simulated light curves and try it on a subset of
the Kepler space mission catalogue. We use five classes of simulated light
curves (CONSTANT, TRANSIT, VARIABLE, MLENS and EB for constant light curves,
transiting exoplanet, variable, microlensing events and eclipsing binaries,
respectively) to analyse the power of the method. The algorithm uses four
features in order to classify the light curves. The training sample contains
5000 light curves (1000 from each class) and 50000 random light curves for
testing. The total SIDRA success ratio is . Furthermore, the success
ratio reaches 95 - 100 for the CONSTANT, VARIABLE, EB, and MLENS classes
and 92 for the TRANSIT class with a decision probability of 60. Because
the TRANSIT class is the one which fails the most, we run a simultaneous fit
using SIDRA and a Box Least Square (BLS) based algorithm for searching for
transiting exoplanets. As a result, our algorithm detects 7.5 more planets
than a classic BLS algorithm, with better results for lower signal-to-noise
light curves. SIDRA succeeds to catch 98 of the planet candidates in the
Kepler sample and fails for 7 of the false alarms subset. SIDRA promises to
be useful for developing a detection algorithm and/or classifier for large
photometric surveys such as TESS and PLATO exoplanet future space missions.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 2 Table

Cultivo de maceiras e produçâo de sidra com denominaçâo de origen protegida no Principado das Asturias, Espanha
A sidra é obtida a partir da fermentação alcoólica do mosto de maçã. Na Espanha, a bebida é elaborada basicamente no norte do país, sendo o Principado das Astúrias a principal comunidade autônoma produtora. A maçã e a sidra, elementos marcantes da socioeconomia regional, sustentam o preparo do fermentado reconhecido pela qualidade da matéria-prima que emprega. Todavia, longe de um modelo de cultivo extensivo de macieiras, o meio rural asturiano está pautado na presença de pequenas propriedades policultoras familiares. Além disso, até meados da década de 1990, devido à expansão da pecuária bovina, as atividades de cultivo de maçã e produção de sidra presenciaram acentuado descenso. Diante deste panorama desfavorável, a Denominação de Origem Protegida (DOP) "Sidra das Astúrias", obtida em 2003, objetivou promover a bebida e revigorar a fruticultura da maçã. Os resultados alcançados com o selo DOP tem sido promissores considerando o retorno dos produtores ao cultivo da fruta e a expansão do mercado consumidor da sidra asturianaCider is a beverage obtained from the alcoholic fermentation of apple juice. In Spain the drink is produced above all in the north of the country, and the Principality of Asturias is the main producing region. Apples are one of the most important products of the region's agriculture and are responsible for the high quality of the cider made in Asturias. However, far from being modelled on apple-growing monoculture, the rural economy in Asturias is built around small family farms engaging in polyculture. Also, up to the mid-1990s apple cultivation and cider-making saw a significant decline due to the growth of cattle farming. To deal with this unfavourable outlook the "Asturian Cider" Protected Designations Origin (PDO, a government-conferred quality benchmark), obtained in 2003, aimed to promote the beverage and boost apple farming. Reasons for betel quid chewing amongst dependent and non-dependent betel quid chewing adolescents: a school-based cross-sectional survey
Background:
Betel quid (BQ) chewing in children is initiated in their adolescence. It is pivotal to understand adolescents’ reasons behind chewing BQ. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the reasons for BQ chewing amongst adolescents using reasons for betel quid chewing scale (RBCS) and their associated dependency on it.
Methods:
This is a cross-sectional school based survey. Out of 2200 adolescents from 26 schools of Karachi, 874 BQ chewers were assessed for their reasons of BQ chewing and dependency on it. Regression analyses were employed to report crude and adjusted (after adjusting for all reasons of BQ chewing) effect sizes with 95% confidence interval and P-value was set significant at < 0.05.
Results:
Students who believed that BQ chewing relaxes them (stimulation construct) were twice as likely to be dependent on BQ (OR = 2.36, 95% CI (1.20–4.65) as compared with others. Participants who thought it eases their decision making (stimulation construct), were sizably more likely to be dependent on BQ (OR = 9.65, 95% CI (4.15–22.43) than those who did not consider ease in decision making important. Adolescents who considered not chewing as rude (social/cultural construct), were thrice more likely to be dependent on BQ (OR = 2.50, 95% CI (1.11–5.63) than others.
Conclusions:
Stimulation remained fundamental chewing reason followed by social/cultural trigger amongst adolescents. Any future intervention may get favorable results if it addresses ways to overcome stimulation and social/cultural barriers that are strongly associated with BQ chewing and dependency
