Search Engine Optimisation in UK news production

This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in Journalism Practice, 5(4), 462 - 477, 2011, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/17512786.2010.551020.This paper represents an exploratory study into an emerging culture in UK online newsrooms—the practice of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), which assesses its impact on news production. Comprising a short-term participant observational case study at a national online news publisher, and a series of semi-structured, in-depth interviews with SEO professionals at three further UK media organisations, the author sets out to establish how SEO is operationalised in the newsroom, and what consequences these practices have for online news production. SEO practice is found to be varied and application is not universal. Not all UK news organisations are making the most of SEO even though some publishers take a highly sophisticated approach. Efforts are constrained by time, resources and management support, as well as off-page technical issues. SEO policy is found, in some cases, to inform editorial policy, but there is resistance to the principal of SEO driving decision-making. Several themes are established which call for further research

Thermodynamic Properties of Block Copolymer Electrolytes Containing Imidazolium and Lithium Salts

We report on the thermal properties, phase behavior, and thermodynamics of a series of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) copolymers (SEO) mixed with the ionic species Li[N(SO_(2)CF_3)_2] (LiTFSI), imidazolium TFSI (ImTFSI), and an equimolar mixture of LiTFSI and ImTFSI (Mix). Differential scanning calorimetric scans reveal similar thermal behavior of SEO/LiTFSI and SEO/ImTFSI at the same salt concentrations. Phase behavior and thermodynamics were determined using a combination of small-angle X-ray scattering and birefringence. The thermodynamics of our mixtures can be mapped on to the theory of neat block copolymer phase behavior provided the Flory−Huggins interaction parameter, χ, between the blocks is replaced by an effective χ (χ_(eff)) that increases linearly with salt concentration. The phase behavior and the value of m, the slope of the χ_(eff) versus salt concentration data, were similar for SEO/LiTFSI, SEO/ImTFSI, and SEO/Mix blends. The theory developed by Wang [ J. Phys. Chem. B. 2008, 41, 16205] provides a basis for understanding the fundamental underpinnings of the measured value of m. We compare our experimental results with the predictions of this theory with no adjustable parameters

The role of search engine optimization in search marketing

This paper examines the impact of search engine optimization (SEO) on the competition between advertisers for organic and sponsored search results. The results show that a positive level of search engine optimization may improve the search engine's ranking quality and thus the satisfaction of its visitors. In the absence of sponsored links, the organic ranking is improved by SEO if and only if the quality provided by a website is sufficiently positively correlated with its valuation for consumers. In the presence of sponsored links, the results are accentuated and hold regardless of the correlation. When sponsored links serve as a second chance to acquire clicks from the search engine, low-quality websites have a reduced incentive to invest in SEO, giving an advantage to their high-quality counterparts. As a result of the high expected quality on the organic side, consumers begin their search with an organic click. Although SEO can improve consumer welfare and the payoff of high-quality sites, we find that the search engine's revenues are typically lower when advertisers spend more on SEO and thus less on sponsored links. Modeling the impact of the minimum bid set by the search engine reveals an inverse U-shaped relationship between the minimum bid and search engine profits, suggesting an optimal minimum bid that is decreasing in the level of SEO activity. © 2013 INFORMS

A molecular-line study of the interstellar bullet engine IRAS 05506+2414

We present interferometric and single-dish molecular line observations of the interstellar bullet-outflow source IRAS 05506+2414, whose wide-angle bullet spray is similar to the Orion BN/KL explosive outflow and likely arises from an entirely different mechanism than the classical accretion-disk-driven bipolar flows in young stellar objects. The bullet-outflow source is associated with a large pseudo-disk and three molecular outflows -- a high-velocity outflow (HVO), a medium-velocity outflow (MVO), and a slow, extended outflow (SEO). The size (mass) of the pseudo-disk is 10,350 AU x 6,400 AU (0.64-0.17 Msun); from a model-fit assuming infall and rotation we derive a central stellar mass of 8--19 Msun. The HVO (MVO) has an angular size ~5180 (~3330) AU, and a projected outflow velocity of ~140 km/s (~30 km/s). The SEO size (outflow speed) is ~0.9 pc (~6 km/s). The HVO's axis is aligned with (orthogonal to) that of the SEO (pseudo-disk). The velocity structure of the MVO is unresolved. The scalar momenta in the HVO and SEO are very similar, suggesting that the SEO has resulted from the HVO interacting with ambient cloud material. The bullet spray shares a common axis with the pseudo-disk, and has an age comparable to that of MVO (few hundred years), suggesting that these three structures are intimately linked together. We discuss several models for the outflows in IRAS 05506+2414 (including dynamical decay of a stellar cluster, chance encounter of a runaway star with a dense cloud, and close passage of two protostars), and conclude that 2nd-epoch imaging to derive proper motions of the bullets and nearby stars can help to discriminate between them.Comment: accepted for ApJ 10/05/17 (29 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables

Magnetism of coupled spin tetrahedra in ilinskite-type KCu5_{5}O2_2(SeO3_3)2_2Cl3_3

    Get PDF
Synthesis, thermodynamic properties, and microscopic magnetic model of ilinskite-type KCu5_{5}O2_2(SeO3_3)2_2Cl3_3 built by corner-sharing Cu4_4 tetrahedra are reported, and relevant magnetostructural correlations are discussed. Quasi-one-dimensional magnetic behavior with the short-range order around 50\,K and the absence of long-range order down to at least 2\,K is observed experimentally and explained in terms of weakly coupled spin ladders (tubes) with a complex topology formed upon fragmentation of the tetrahedral network. This fragmentation is rooted in the non-trivial effect of the SeO3_3 groups that render the Cu--O--Cu superexchange strongly ferromagnetic.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

Analisis Kinerja Perusahaan Pre-seasoned Equity Offerings

The aim of this research is to prove whether earnings management persists in prior to Seasoned Equity Offerings (SEO) at the Jakarta Stock Exchange. This research is conducted by comparing financial performances during periods before SEO of companies which execute seasoned equity offerings to those which did not. Samples for this research are companies listed in the Jakarta Stock Exchange during 1997 –2002. The hypothesis for this research is that the financial performances of companies executing SEO is higher than those companies not executing SEO. Proxy for SEO is the event of right issue. Current Ratio (CR), Debt Equity Ratio (DER), Return On Investment (ROI) ratio, Net Profit Margin (NPM) ratio, and Operating Profit Margin (OPM) ratio are used to assess financial performance. 47 companies make thesample of companies executing SEO during 1997 – 2002. For comparison, non-SEO companies are chosen from companies of similar industries and size as those of SEO companies. This research provides evidence that, on average, performances of companies executing SEO are higher than those companies not executing SEO, even though the difference is statistically insignificant. The conclusion for this research is that there are no significant financial performance differences between SEO companies and non SEO companies in the period prior to SEO. The indications of earnings management inthe event of SEO is found in a small numbers of companies
